Wejście na najwyższy szczyt Afryki – legendarne śnieżne Kilimandżaro – to marzenie każdego kto choć raz zobaczył zdjęcie tej góry majestatycznie wznoszącej się ponad sawanną. Przed epidemią Covid-19 tej sztuki dokonywało… 35 tysięcy osób rocznie. Około stu dziennie. Czy istnieje jakaś alternatywa dla tych, których przeraża taki tłum turystów (lub wysokość 5895 m.n.p.m.)? Tak. To Mount Meru – wulkan położony niecałe 70 kilometrów na zachód od Kilimandżaro.
Planując podróż do Tanzanii braliśmy oczywiście pod uwagę trekking na Kilimandżaro. Czym bardziej zagłębialiśmy się w ten temat, tym więcej jednak znajdowaliśmy minusów. Tłum turystów to raz – choć w tym roku ze względu na pandemię powinno być luźniej. Minusem nr dwa była cena – wspinaczka na Kilimandżaro wymaga wynajęcia przewodników, tragarzy, kucharzy – oraz zakupu bardzo drogich biletów wstępu do parku narodowego. Tanzania jest słynna z wysokich cen wstępu do Parków Narodowych – każdy dzień pobytu w nich to od 50 do nawet 200 dolarów (od osoby!). Ponieważ wspinaczka na Kilimandżaro trwa w zależności od wybranej trasy od 7 do 10 dni – łączny koszt takiej przygody zaczyna się od 7500 złotych a kończy grubo powyżej 10 tysięcy.
Cenę można jeszcze jakoś zaakceptować jeżeli się uda wejść – zgodnie z powiedzeniem „przecież nigdy już więcej tutaj nie przyjadę, więc albo teraz, albo nigdy”. Niemniej – pomimo opinii że to góra dla każdego – w zależności od warunków atmosferycznych nawet 1/3 osób podejmujących trud wspinaczki nie dociera do celu. Na tych wysokościach głównym wrogiem jest choroba wysokościowa, na którą cierpi wiele osób. Do tego dochodzą odmrożenia i trudne warunki bytowania. Choć technicznie Kilimandżaro jest łatwe – brakuje odcinków wymagających umiejętności wspinaczkowych czy pokonywania ekspozycji – to zdarzają się wypadki także śmiertelne.
Wahając się nad podjęciem decyzji „wchodzimy czy nie wchodzimy” znaleźliśmy w przepastnych otchłaniach Internetu kilka interesujących relacji ze zdobycia innego niezbyt odległego od Kilimandżaro szczytu – wulkanu o wdzięcznej nazwie Meru. Były to relacje bardzo pozytywne a w dodatku pochodzące od osób, które weszły i na Kilimandżaro, i na liczącą 4566 metrów wysokości Mount Meru. Wszyscy podsumowywali, że Meru pod względem oferowanych widoków bije króla Afryki na łeb. A ponieważ jest niższy i wspinaczka trwa tylko trzy lub cztery dni, jest także tańszy. Koszt wejścia to około 2500-3000 złotych.
Obejrzeliśmy trochę zapierających dech w piersi zdjęć i decyzja zapadła: wchodzimy na Mount Meru.
Pomimo iż Meru jest młodszym bratem Kilim, to nie należy go lekceważyć. Pod względem sprzętu jaki należy ze sobą zabrać wskazane jest, by być dobrze przygotowanym na ujemne temperatury oraz na bardzo silne wiatry wiejące podczas wejścia na szczyt. Ostatni kilometr obfituje także w ekspozycje oraz nieco trudniejsze podejścia prowadzące skalnym rumoszem. Natomiast znacznym ułatwieniem jest fakt, że na trasie znajdują się dwa nowoczesne campy, w których można wygodnie przenocować.
Wyprawę na Mount Meru kupuje się tak samo jak wejście na Kilimandżaro. Należy wynająć przewodnika oraz tragarzy zwanych tutaj „potasi”. Ze względu na przemierzające zbocza wulkany do wysokości 3300-3500 metrów lwy, bawoły i inne drapieżniki – obowiązkowy jest najem parkowego strażnika z bronią długą. Ten oczywiście nie strzela do zwierząt – chyba że jest to absolutnie konieczne – ale prowadzi grupę unikając zwierzyny i gwarantując by było po prostu bezpiecznie. Warto nająć także kucharza, i choć wydaje to się ekstrawagancją to jego koszt jest w całej ekspedycji wręcz pomijalny.
Oczywiście składu ekipy nie zestawia się samemu. Tym zajmuje się wybrana agencja, która sprawdza także sprzęt, uzupełnia ewentualne braki w ekwipunku, transportuje na start, zaopatruje tragarzy w zapasy żywności, wodę i lekarstwa. Można oszczędzać na zespole, ale to bardzo złudne i groszowe oszczędności. Można wnosić wszystko na własnych plecach – tylko że to raptem kilkadziesiąt dolarów taniej. Przytłaczająca większość kosztów to wciąż same bilety do parku narodowego Arusha. My zapłaciliśmy po 700 dolarów od osoby, z czego 560$ to były właśnie opłaty parkowe.
Wchodziliśmy na Mount Meru we dwóch. Ale nasz zespół towarzyszący liczył aż sześć dodatkowych osób: parkowego strażnika ze strzelbą, przewodnika, kucharza i trzech tragarzy. Nie obyło się bez typowych dla Afryki – i wesołych – zdarzeń, gdy np. okazywało się po dniu wędrówki że nasza grupa się powiększa. Jeden z tragarzy zabrał ze sobą siostrę, która niosła kucharzowi garnki. Drugiego dnia okazało się, że mamy także kelnera który podaje nam zupę.
