Espiritu Santo Island Vanuatu | Blue Lagoons, Port Orly, Champagne Beach
The following video will highlight how to make the most out of a day at Espiritu Santo island Vanuatu.
We highly recommend that you hire a car for the day trip. You can also hire a local driver but driving around Santo Island is so easy and there is only one main road so it was great to explore at our own pace.
Drive all the way to the North of Santo Island and make your first stop at the beautiful Port Orly Beach.
Next head back and stop at Lonnoc and the very popular Champagne Beach on Santo Island.
Lastly, check out three of the most beautiful blue holes in Santo Island: Matevulu Blue Hole, Riri Blue Hole and Nanda (or Jackie’s) Blue Hole.
Make sure to have a fair bit of cash on you as you will need to pay entrance fees to visit the beaches as well as the blue holes.
We hope you enjoyed our video on what to do on Santo Island in one day.

Vanuatu Travel guide
Vanuatu is an archipelago nation consisting of 83 islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean, north of New Zealand and east of Australia. With such a large north-south area, Vanuatu has all the tropical variances possible. From hot and humid in the north, to mild and dry in the south. Vanuatu is a Pacific island adventure far beyond any notions of cruise-ship ports and flashy resorts. Deserted beaches, ancient culture, remote and rugged islands and world-class diving are just a small part of the magnetism of this scattered 80-plus island archipelago.
The islands of Vanuatu are grouped into six geographic provinces, the names formed by combining the first syllables or letters of the major islands in each.
-Torba
Torres Islands and Banks Islands
-Sanma (Luganville)
Espiritu Santo, Aore and Malo
-Penama
Pentecost, Ambae and Maewo
-Malampa
Malakula, Ambrym and Paama
-Shefa (Port-Vila)
Shepherd Group and Efate
-Tafea
Tanna, Aniwa, Futuna, Erromango and Aneityum
The national airline, Air Vanuatu, operates domestic flights throughout the islands. Comfortable daily flights in the 72 seater ATR aircraft connect Port Vila with Santo and Tanna, but elsewhere, domestic flights are a very different experience from flying internationally with Air Vanuatu. There are two ferry boats operating regularly on the route Vila - Santo: 1: Vanuatu Ferry and the Big Sista. Both ships are fairly comfortable. In Port Vila the buses are mini vans seating about 10 people, which largely traverse the main road and go and stop where you would like them to go. You can easily identify a bus as their licence plate starts with a B. Taxis are plentiful within Port Vila. Fare is calculated per taxi. You can easily tell and tax as their licence plate starts with a T. Within Vila Town, the taxi is 500 vatu for everyone inside, so if you have more than 3 people, it's cheaper than a bus.
The Vanuatu people are a delight to photograph, friendly, co-operative and photogenic especially the children who are simply gorgeous. Yes, they love to be photographed but please do not offer to pay to photograph local people as this will quickly discourage spontaneity and encourage commercialisation. Always ask before taking photos of local people.
There are many restaurants and eateries in Port Vila, ranging from up-market places catering to tourists and expats, to more low-key establishments. The main markets in Port Vila and Luganville have sections selling cheap rice meals.
Around Port Vila and Luganville there is a range of accommodation, from dorm beds to luxury resorts. Prices are not super cheap by developing-country standards but there's a reasonable amount of moderately-priced accommodation. Eating out is expensive in Port Vila so self-catering is a good option for those on a budget. In Port Vila, you can pay as little as 2000 VT a night if you're prepared to slum it; for something reasonably nice you'll be looking at 5-10,000 VT. Luxury options are considerably more.
On rural islands, accommodation is provided mostly by small family-run guest bungalows. These are usually friendly and charming but very basic in terms of facilities (though Tanna has a couple of better-developed accommodation options). Some church missions also have guestrooms. Prices for basic rural accommodation typically range from 1,000 to 3,000VT per person per night. Rural bungalows usually also provide meals, as there are generally no alternative eating options other than breakfast crackers and tinned spam from the village store.

What is there to see in Santo, Vanuatu? Santo Heritage Tours
Thank you to Santo Heritage Tours for our day exploring with Tok Tok Vanuatu.
Our guide, Samuel, picked us up at Barrier Beach Resort at 10am and we had a fantastic adventure.
There are many coconut plantations and we stopped to savor a fresh coconut with an island straw. In Vanuatu, they use all the parts of the coconut. You can weave a mat or basket with the fronds. You can make a broom. You can start a fire and you can use the trunk for your house. It is the fruit of life because you can walk carrying only coconuts and you can drink and eat from the coconut. The trees can live for 100 years.
Did you know that there are 83 islands, 6 provinces, 115 languages and 40 dialects in Vanuatu? But everyone can tok tok bislama.
Samuel added to my list of words I can speak or tok tok in the local language of Bislama.

We passed by Riri River where we had already gone by canoe 3km to the Blue Hole.
We saw the road to James Michener’s house where he wrote South Pacific. He lived on an island just off Santo which is now privately and you cannot visit.
There is food growing all over the island like pumpkin and taro and you can make a living fence with banana and papaya trees. There are plantations now of Noni which is used to treat many diseases. I loved seeing all of the Banyan trees.
I absolutely loved swimming at Champagne beach. The stunning white sand and gorgeous area captivated my heart. I wanted to stay all day.
Mandy and I had lunch with a view in Port Olry at Harbor beach view restaurant. I loved the water there too and cannot wait to return.
As we arrived at Nanda or Jackie’s Blue hole, our sunshine turned to liquid sunshine but I went in the clear blue water anyway!
Thank you to Mandy Buttenshaw from DownUnder Journeys for the video and photo assistance and for being a great dive buddy and travel companion. Do you want to travel to Vanuatu? Contact her for the best information on the South Pacific!

Millennium Cave in Luganville, Vanuatu
Wonder of nature. Millenium Cave is the jewel of Espiritu Santo, the largest island in Vanuatu. In the heart of the Pacific, these islands are inhabited by populations who devote a vital cult to our greatest wealth, nature. Among these treasures, an extraordinary experience leads the most daring to an expedition in the middle of the jungle through suspension bridges, canyoning, waterfalls and rivers to reach a sacred cavity, the Millenium Cave .
The Millenium Cave or Millennium Cave owes its name to its discovery in the 2000s. Once lost in the dense jungle of the island of Espiritu Santo, this extraordinary natural site was discovered by chance by local ni-van who explored their land. After several descents and explorations, they gradually opened the site for adventurers in search of sensations. The eco-tour organized by the local community has only been open since 2012 and is very successful. The experience is worthy of the country, 100% nature. Story and opinion of this adventure!
This full day adventure begins with a 45 minute off-road drive from Luganville into the bush to Nambel village in central south Santo. After a 20 minute walk you will arrive at Vunaspef village where you will be briefed by your tour guide and given a life jacket and torch before you continue on.
The trip is truly amazing and is divided into four parts – trekking, caving, canyoning and swimming.
From Vunaspef you will continue walking into the bush along narrow tracks, bamboo bridges and ladders until you reach the rest point just before you descend to the river. At this point your guides will paint your face with traditional symbols from local clay, which will ensure your safe passage through the river and cave.
As you continue on you will climb down into the cave. The cave has a high ceiling and is home to many nesting swallows and some bats, which you see by torchlight as you walk through. The river runs the entire way through the cave and is cool and refreshing as you climb over rocks and wade through the cavern.
Once you exit the cave, the river opens out into a beautiful rest spot surrounded by lush green jungle. Stop on the river bank for lunch and cool off the in the small swimming hole near the waterfall at the entrance.
From here you will enter the canyoning portion of the trip. Test your agility as you climb over and under boulders with the help of strategic hand and foot holds. Your guides will be with you every step of the way as make your way down river.
Relax after all the hard work and float down the Sarakata river and take in the breathe taking scenery with jungle overhanging shear rock faces. Take time to stand under the waterfall or jump from surrounding rock platforms if you haven’t got your fill of adventure just yet!
After a last climb out of the river you will return to Vunaspef village where tropical fruit, tea and coffee are waiting for you. Local handicrafts are also available for purchase.
