The Indian Star Tortoise

Indian star tortoises (Geochelone elegans) is a threatened tortoise species native to India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka where it inhabits dry areas and scrub forest.
Indian star tortoise can grow to 10 inches long. The patterning, although highly contrasting, is disruptive and breaks the outline of the #tortoise as it sits in the shade of grass or vegetation.
They are mostly #herbivorous and #feed on grasses, fallen fruit, flowers, and leaves of succulent plants, and will occasionally eat carrion. In #captivity however, they should never be fed meat.
Anatomy and morphology
The carapace of G. elegans is very convex, with dorsal shields often forming humps; the lateral margins are nearly vertical; the posterior margin is somewhat expanded and strongly serrated. It has no nuchal scute, and the supracaudal is undivided, and curved inward in the male; the shields are strongly striated concentrically. The first vertebral #scute is longer than broad, and the others are broader than long, with the third at least as broad as the corresponding costal.
The #plastron is large, truncated or openly notched in front, and deeply notched and bifid behind; the suture between the humerals is much longer than that between the femorals; the suture between the pectorals is very short; the axillary and inguinal sutures are rather small. The head is moderate in #size , with the forehead swollen, convex, and covered with rather small and irregular shields; the beak is feebly hooked, bi- or tricuspid; the edges of the jaws are denticulated; the alveolar ridge of the upper jaw is strong.
The outer-anterior face of the fore limbs have numerous unequal-sized, large, imbricate, bony, pointed tubercles; the heel has large, more or less spur-like tubercles; a group of large conical or subconical tubercles is found on the hinder side of the thigh.
The carapace is black, with yellow areolae from which yellow streaks radiate; these streaks are usually narrow and very numerous. The plastron #likewise has black and yellow, #radiating streaks.
Indian Star Tortoises
The Indian Star Tortoise is a very ornate tortoise that has yellow star patterns covering its black shell. They are available in the UK. The Star Tortoise makes a great pet because it maintains a small size of 20 cm as adults with a weight of roughly 1kg. The males are typically half that size.
The Indian Star tortoise (Geochelone elegans) is a very ornate markings with yellow star patterns covering its black shell. It can be found in the wild in India, South Eastern Pakistan and Sri Lanka. The Indian Star tortoise can be found in a number of different habitats, ranging from arid/semi-deserts to grassy plains and also more humid areas in moist deciduous forests (although these deciduous forests do drop their leaves in dry the period of the year also creating a dry habitat for the star tortoise)
The Indian star tortoise
was upgraded to CITES Appendix I in 2019 and therefore requires a licence to trade (sell or breed) from this tortoise and also to sell the offspring.They are also know to eat insects and carrion when given the opportunity.
For shelter against both very hot weather, star tortoises use rocks, vegetation and sometimes planted hedges.
Indian star tortoises do NOT hibernate and in captivity we need to offer them heat, UVB, light all year around. They do not do well if kept too cold or too damp resulting in respiratory problems. They are also more sensitive to parasites or diseases carried by other species of tortoise so is very important ot keep this species isolated from other breeds of tortoise.

White water kayaking in the Republic of Kerelia, Russia (2012). Three
kayak paddlers struggling through foamy white water of Chirka-Kem' in
russian Karelia.
Spanning almost 67 km, the route ranges from streamless, motionless
lakes to extreme whitewater. Most suitable for rafts and catarafts,
it's also adored by kayakers -- in fact, russian folding kayak
(baidarka) paddlers. Numerous rapids vary in river difficulty class
from I (like Loukhi and Chavgo rapids) up to IV (Tahko
waterfall). Running one of the rapids, our `Ladoga-2' has gained
maximum speed -- 15 mph.

Designed to tackle the Luftwaffe and its bombers at high-altitude, the nature of combat on the Eastern Front often meant that the MiG-3 had to operate outside of its design parameters.
The Museum’s MiG-3 (serial number 3457) is the only example found in North America and one of just a handful that can be seen intact anywhere in the world. Like the Museum’s Yak-3M the MiG-3 is powered by an American engine, the 1,400-hp Allison V-1710, which is similar in design to its original Mikulin AM35-A engine. The aircraft was restored by Aviarestoration in Russia and wears the same markings (as White 17) as it had when it was crash-landed in September 1941 by Col. M.M. Golovnya.
During the restoration of 3457, parts from as many as six MiG-3 wreck sites were used. These wrecks were found and recovered throughout the Murmansk and Loukhi regions of Russia. Due to wartime shortages of aluminum alloys widely used for the construction of aircraft in other nations, much of the MiG-3 actually makes use of wooden compounds, wood being much more available to the Soviet Union.

*MAM aircraft is unarmed MiG-3s were delivered to frontline fighter regiments beginning in the spring of 1941 and were a handful for pilots accustomed to the lower-performance and docile Polikarpov I-152 and I-153 biplanes and the Polikarpov I-16 monoplane. It remained tricky and demanding to fly even after the extensive improvements made over the MiG-1.[15] Many fighter regiments had not kept pace in training pilots to handle the MiG and the rapid pace of deliveries resulted in many units having more MiGs than trained pilots during the German invasion. By 1 June 1941, 1,029 MIG-3s were on strength, but there were only 494 trained pilots.[16] In contrast to the untrained pilots of the 31st Fighter Regiment, those of the 4th Fighter Regiment were able to claim three German high-altitude reconnaissance aircraft shot down before war broke out in June 1941. However high-altitude combat of this sort was to prove to be uncommon on the Eastern Front where most air-to-air engagements were at altitudes well below 5,000 metres (16,000 ft). At these altitudes the MiG-3 was outclassed by the Bf 109 in all respects, and even by other new Soviet fighters such as the Yakovlev Yak-1. Furthermore, the shortage of ground-attack aircraft in 1941 forced it into that role as well, for which it was totally unsuited.[17] Pilot Alexander E. Shvarev recalled: The Mig was perfect at altitudes of 4,000 m and above. But at lower altitudes it was, as they say, 'a cow'. That was the first weakness. The second was its armament: weapons failure dogged this aircraft. The third weakness was its gunsights, which were inaccurate: that's why we closed in as much as we could and fired point blank.[18]
On 22 June 1941, most MiG-3s and MiG-1s were in the border military districts of the Soviet Union. The Leningrad Military District had 164, 135 were in the Baltic Military District, 233 in the Western Special Military District, 190 in the Kiev Military District and 195 in the Odessa Military District for a total of 917 on hand, of which only 81 were non-operational.[19] An additional 64 MiGs were assigned
The 4th and 55th Fighter Regiments had most of the MiG-3s assigned to the Odessa Military District and their experiences on the first day of the war may be taken as typical. The 4th, an experienced unit, shot down a Romanian Bristol Blenheim reconnaissance bomber, confirmed by postwar research, and lost one aircraft which crashed into an obstacle on takeoff. The 55th was much less experienced with the MiG-3 and claimed three aircraft shot down, although recent research confirms only one German Henschel Hs 126 was 40% damaged, and suffered three pilots killed and nine aircraft lost.
