लोककथाओं में महाभारत काल के दौरान इस क्षेत्र की महत्वपूर्ण उपस्थिति का वर्णन किया गया है। पृथ्वी को बचाने के लिए विष्णु ने अपने दूसरे अवतार में कुर्मा (कछुए) का रूप ग्रहण किया और जिले में एक विशेष स्थान पर कै वर्षों तक खड़े रहे।
विशिष्ट शिला जिस पर भगवान खडे थे कुरमाशीला के रूप में जानी जाने लगी | बाद में पूरी पहाड़ी कुरमाचल के रूप में जाना जाने लगा। इन कारणों से कुमाऊं नाम उत्पन्न माना जाता है।
काली नदी के तटीय क्षेत्र को ही लंबे समय तक काली कुमाऊं के नाम से जाना गया। वर्ष 1997 को इसे एक अलग जिले के रूप में घोषित किया गया |ऐसे तो चंपावत में काई पर्यटन स्थल है जहां आप अच्छा समय ब्यतीत कर सकते हैं |

According to Census 2011 information the location code or village code of Chamroli village is 054220. Chamroli village is located in Lohaghat Tehsil of Champawat district in Uttarakhand, India. It is situated 18km away from sub-district headquarter Lohaghat and 33km away from district headquarter Champawat. As per 2009 stats, Chamrauli is the gram panchayat of Chamroli village.

Lohaghat is a beautiful hill station located in the Champawat district in the state of Uttarakhand. 5 km away from Abbott Mount, this ancient town is an important place for temples and is flocked by tourists due to its historical and mythological significance. This sleepy little town is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The serene climate, pine and oak trees and verdant greenery are what beckons people to this exquisite location.
Situated on the banks of Lohawati River and at an altitude of 1800 meters, Lohaghat is one of the least explored Himalayan retreats. Blessed with natural beauty in abundance, this place acts as a perfect getaway from the daily trials of the city. It has managed to retain its charm and grandeur for over a century now. The summer sees the place turn into a landscape of countless hues due to Rhododendrons spread over the town.
Abbott Mount -
This place was discovered by Britisher John Abbott (whose descendants now live in Jhansi) in the pre-independence era and he decided to name the hill after himself. He built 13 cottages here and some of these still survive. Panorama takes a new meaning as you treat yourself to views of peaks like Trishul, Nanda Kot, Nanda Ghunti and the Nanda Devi spanning in an arc in front of you across a valley. This is the place where you just walk around amidst the woods with no traffic or sounds, sip tea with clouds below and watch beautiful sunsets. There is a church built in 1942, locked now, where prayers are supposedly still held once or twice a year. You can even play a game of cricket on what is claimed to be the second highest pitch after Chail in Himachal Pradesh at just under 7,000 feet.
