The Loire Valley, is located in the middle stretch of the Loire River in central France, in both the administrative regions Pays de la Loire and Centre-Val de Loire.
The area of the Loire Valley comprises about 800 square kilometres.
It is referred to as the Cradle of the French and the Garden of France due to the abundance of vineyards, fruit orchards (such as cherries), and artichoke, and asparagus fields, which line the banks of the river.
Notable for its historic towns, architecture, and wines, the valley has been inhabited since the Middle Palaeolithic period.
The climate is favorable most of the year, the river often acting as a line of demarcation in France's weather between the northern climate and the southern.
The river has a significant effect on the mesoclimate of the region, adding a few degrees of temperature.
The climate can be cool with springtime frost while wine harvest months may have rain.
Summers are hot; however, influences from the Atlantic moderate the temperature with breezes.
The Loire Valley wine region is one of the world's most well-known areas of wine production and includes several French wine regions situated along the river from the Muscadet region on the Atlantic coast to the regions of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé just southeast of the city of Orléans in north central France.
Loire wines tend to exhibit a characteristic fruitiness with fresh, crisp flavors.
The châteaux, numbering more than three hundred, represent a nation of builders starting with the necessary castle fortifications in the 10th century to the splendour of those built half a millennium later.
When the French kings began constructing their huge châteaux here, the nobility, not wanting or even daring to be far from the seat of power, followed suit.
Their presence in the lush, fertile valley began attracting the very best landscape designers.
In addition to its many châteaux, the cultural monuments illustrate to an exceptional degree the ideals of the Renaissance and the Age of the Enlightenment on western European thought and design.
Many of the châteaux were designed to be built on the top of hills, one example of this is the Château d'Amboise.
The only château to have been built in the riverbed is the Château de Montsoreau.
Many of the châteaux had extremely detailed and expensive churches on the grounds, or within the actual château itself.
On December 2, 2000, UNESCO added the central part of the river valley, between Chalonnes-sur-Loire and Sully-sur-Loire, to its list of World Heritage Sites.

Hi there! Welcome Loches, France
Watch and join me through this video and let's explore.
▶Wikipedia:
Loches is a commune in the Indre-et-Loire department, central France.
It is situated 42 kilometres southeast of Tours by road, on the left bank of the river Indre.
Loches (the Roman Leucae) grew up around a monastery founded about 500 by St. Ours and belonged to the Counts of Anjou from 886 until 1205. In the latter year it was seized from King John of England by Philip Augustus, and from the middle of the 13th century until after the time of Charles IX of France the castle was a residence of the kings of France, apart for a brief interlude in 1424 when it was heritably granted to Archibald Douglas, Duke of Touraine. Antoine Guenand, Lord of La Celle-Guenand was appointed Captain-Governor of Loches in 1441.
The town, one of the most picturesque in central France, lies at the foot of the rocky eminence on which stands the Château de Loches, the castle of the Anjou family, surrounded by an outer wall 4 m (13 ft) thick, and consisting of the old collegiate church of St Ours, the royal lodge and the donjon or keep.
The church of St Ours dates from the tenth century to the twelfth century; among its distinguishing features are the huge stone pyramids surmounting the nave and the beautiful carving of the west door. It contains the tomb of Agnès Sorel.
The royal lodge
The royal lodge, built by Charles VII of France and once used as the subprefecture, contains the oratory of Anne of Brittany. It was here on 11 May 1429 that Joan of Arc arrived, fresh from her historic victory at Orleans, to meet the king.
The donjon includes, besides the ruined keep (12th century), the Martelet, celebrated as the prison of Lodovico Sforza, Duke of Milan, who died there in 1508, and the Tour Ronde, built by Louis XI of France and containing the famous iron cages in which state prisoners, including according to a story now discredited, the inventor Cardinal Balue, were confined.
Loches has a town hall and several houses of the Renaissance period. The town hall was constructed after royal approval by Francis 1st in 1515.
On the right bank of the Indre, opposite the town, is the village of Beaulieu-lès-Loches, once the seat of a barony.

Hello everyone, come along with us as we spent a day in the medieval and beautiful royal city of LOCHES, located in the Loire Valley of France. A stroll through medieval times !
As a town of Art and History, Loches cultivates the art of strolling around, from one street to the next, stopping to look at views of the inaccessible courtyards of the beautiful residences, the Indre River, the bell towers and the elegant surrounding countryside.

When you walk through the Royal gateway, you enter 1,000 years of history, firstly with the collegiate church of Saint-Ours where you’ll find the intricately carved tomb of the ‘Lady of Beauty’, Agnès Sorel, the favourite of King Charles VII, then the imposing 44 m high keep built in the 11th century by the fearsome Foulques Nerra.

Discovering Loches, France in the Loire Valley.
It was early January when we reached out to Susan Walter, of Loire Valley Time Travel Tours, a local day trip tour operator, to arrange a tour of Loches in the Loire Valley. We were particularly interested in visiting this cute town and chateau, as its donjon/keep is one of the oldest stone structures in France. We are creating a tour highlighting France's oldest buildings, so this promised to be both an enjoyable and educational excursion. Setting out just after daybreak, Mallory's video captures the cold, crisp morning air, with the late-rising sun casting a serene ambiance as we headed east down the A10 autoroute. Our tour promptly commenced after meeting Susan in town after parking at the train station. As we ascended uphill towards the city wall and gatehouse, Susan expertly narrated the evolving history of different sections of the town over time. Below is a brief overview of Loches through time.
Located in the picturesque Loire Valley of France, Loches boasts a rich history dating back over two millennia. This charming town has witnessed numerous significant events throughout the centuries. With its origins tracing back to Gallo-Roman times, Loches grew in importance during the Middle Ages, serving as a strategic stronghold. This imposing castle complex features a massive donjon/keep, medieval walls, gatehouses, and the Agnès Sorel Tower, which stand as a testament to its medieval prominence. Loches played a pivotal role in the Hundred Years' War and was a favored residence of French royalty. Notably, it was here that Joan of Arc met with Charles VII in 1429, a meeting that played a crucial role in her mission to liberate France from English rule. Over time, Loches transitioned into a bustling market town and a center for arts and culture. Today, it retains its medieval charm, attracting visitors with its well-preserved historic sites, large weekly market, and vibrant atmosphere.
Susan was able to explain all of this history in a concise and meaningful way. After about three hours of strolling and chatting, we took a pleasant lunch break before concluding our tour, which spanned about eight hours. We discussed and learned about the disproportionately small town compared to its vast history. I have suggested in earlier posts that it is always helpful to read about a site you are going to visit to understand its historical context and make the experience more meaningful. Even after studying Loche’s history for a few days, Susan's guidance proved invaluable, addressing spontaneous inquiries and enhancing our appreciation of the site's depth and significance. This reinforced the importance of a knowledgeable guide in fully unlocking the nuances of any historic destination. With her wealth of knowledge and passion for the region, Susan enriched our understanding of Loches' past and left us with lasting memories of an unforgettable journey through time. We highly recommend her and Loire Valley Time Travel Tours.

The Royal City of Loches
Tour of the Royal Lodgings and Dungeons of Loches
Royal fortress of Loches
The Royal City of Loches is an imposing medieval fortress.
It includes a massive dungeon, a royal residence where Agnes Sorel, the favourite of King Charles VII lived, and a church (Eglise St. Ours).
The fortress is perched on a promontory and commands the Indre Valley.
This prime natural defensive position has been occupied without interruption for the last fourteen centuries.
Fulk Nerra, the 4th Count of Anjou, built the fortress in the early 11th century.
His successors transformed, enlarged and improved it.
However, Louis XI transformed it into a royal residence in the 13th century.
