Places to see in ( Stirling - UK )
Places to see in ( Stirling - UK )
Stirling is a city in central Scotland. The market town, surrounded by rich farmland, grew up connecting the royal citadel, the medieval old town with its merchants and tradesmen, the bridge and the port. ocated on the River Forth, Stirling is the administrative centre for the Stirling council area, and is traditionally the county town of Stirlingshire. Proverbially it is the strategically important Gateway to the Highlands. It has been said that Stirling, like a huge brooch clasps Highlands and Lowlands together. Similarly he who holds Stirling, holds Scotland is often quoted. Stirling's key position as the lowest bridging point of the River Forth before it broadens towards the Firth of Forth, made it a focal point for travel north or south.
Once the capital of Scotland, Stirling is visually dominated by Stirling Castle. Stirling also has a medieval parish church, the Church of the Holy Rude, where, on 29 July 1567, the infant James VI was anointed King of Scots by the Bishop of Orkney with the service concluding after a sermon by John Knox.[14] The poet King was educated by George Buchanan and grew up in Stirling. He was later also crowned King of England and Ireland on 25 July 1603, bringing closer the countries of the United Kingdom. Modern Stirling is a centre for local government, higher education, tourism, retail, and industry.
Stirling is renowned as the Gateway to the Highlands and is generally regarded as occupying a strategic position at the point where the flatter, largely undulating Scottish Lowlands meet the rugged slopes of the Highlands along the Highland Boundary Fault. Top of the Town consists of Broad Street, Castle Wynd, Ballengeich Pass, Lower Castle Hill Road, Darnley Street, Baker Street ( formerly Baxters St) and St Mary's Wynd. These streets all lead up to Stirling Castle and are the favourite haunt of tourists who stop off at the Old Town Jail, Mar's Wark, Argyll's Lodging and the castle. Ballengeich Pass leads to the graveyard at Ballengeich and the Castle Wynd winds past the old graveyard. The Top of the Town from Broad Street upwards is renowned for its cobblestoned roads, and cars can be heard rattling over the cobblestones on the way down. Craft shops and tourist-focused shops are evident on the way up and once at the top, panoramic views are available across Stirling and beyond. Other Areas of Stirling include :

Loanhead of Daviot Stone Circle
Loanhead of Daviot is an impressive recumbant stone circle.
Other than the recumbant stone and its two flanking stones there are eight stones standing in a circle just under 21 metres in diameter. Inside the stones is the remains of a ring cairn some 16 metres in diameter.
The site was excavated in 1932, revealing pits by each of the circle stones containing sherds of pot and charcoal. In the center of the cairn, many fragments of infants skulls were found.

Old Photographs Of Polton Midlothian Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Polton, a village located in Lasswade parish, Midlothian. Springfield, the second oldest mill in Scotland, opened in 1742 in Polton to service Edinburgh’s growing publishing trade. Springfield Mill supplied paper for the The Edinburgh Courant and The Caledonian Mercury, both popular newspapers of the day. The paper was initially made from rags. Esparto grass became the preferred raw material from the mid 19th and mid 20th century, eventually giving way in the final years of operation to straw and wood pulp. Springfield also pioneered social innovation. As early as 1794 it joined with four other local mills in introducing an employee/employer contribution scheme offering sick pay for mill workers. The Mill finally closed in 1967. Thomas de Quincey the English writer, lived in Polton during the latter part of his life, until his death in 1859. Charles Thomas Clough an eminent geologist, lived at St Ann's Mount, Polton with his family. Polton railway station opened on 15 April 1867 by the Esk Valley Railway. The station was situated on the east side of Polton Road. The moderately sized goods yard had three sidings, one stabling a locomotive when required due to there being no engine shed. There was also a private siding for Springfield Paper Mill to the west of the station. A second private siding served Polton Mill to the north and a third siding served Kevock Mill on the up side of the line. The station closed to passengers on 10 September 1951 and closed to goods traffic, along with the line, on 18 May 196
Old Photographs Lasswade Midlothian Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Lasswade, Scottish Gaelic; Leas Bhaid, a village and parish in Midlothian, on the River North Esk, nine miles South of Edinburgh city centre, between Dalkeith and Loanhead. Sir John Lauder, 1st Baronet of Fountainhall was born at Melville Mill, Lasswade, in 1595; and the present 18th century Barony House was known as Lasswade Cottage when Sir Walter Scott rented it from 1798 to 1804. He was visited here by the writer James Hogg, the Ettrick Shepherd, and the Wordsworths. Thomas de Quincey, author of Confessions of an English Opium Eater, also lived nearby for some years from 1843 in the cottage now known as de Quincey Cottage. The Scottish landscape artist William McTaggart moved to Lasswade in 1889. Former 19th century industries include paper mills, flour mills and a carpet factory. The current Lasswade Parish Church building was originally built in 1830 as a plain box chapel for the former United Presbyterian Church, later United Free Church, it was remodelled by Hardy & Wight in 1894 and became part of the Church of Scotland in 1929. Lasswade railway station opened on 12 October 1868 by the Esk Valley Railway. The station was situated at the end of Westmill Road. There was a moderate sized goods yard which was accessed from the west and consisted of four short sidings, one running behind the platform and going into a stone built goods shed. Lasswade gas works was north of the goods shed, with St Leonards paper mill being a short distance to the north along Westmill Road. Access to the yard was controlled by the signal box, which was behind the platform near its west end. This signal box was closed in the 1930s. The station closed to passengers on 10 September 1951 but the station remained open until the goods yard closed along with the line on 18 May 1964. Richard Baird Smith was born in Lasswade on 31 December 1818, he was a British engineer officer in the East India Company, who played a prominent part as Chief Engineer in the Siege of Delhi of 1857, he died on 13 December 1861. Doctor John Ivor Murray was born in Lasswade in 1824, known as Ivor, he was a Scottish surgeon who practised in China, Hong Kong and then in Sebastopol in the Crimean War. He was notably adventurous, travelling through Borneo, collecting for the Industrial Museum of Scotland, in Edinburgh, and serving on scientific expeditions to China. He was President of the British Balneological and Climatological Society in 1900, he died on 24 July 1903. Old Photographs Of Temple Midlothian Scotland
Tour Scotland wee video of old photographs of Temple, Scottish Gaelic: Baile nan Trodach, a village and civil parish in Midlothian. Situated to the south of Edinburgh, the village lies on the east bank of the river South Esk. Historically the Parish of Temple was divided into three portions, the ancient parish of Clerkington, and the Chapelries of Moorfoot and Balantrodach. In 1127, Hugues de Payens, the first Grand Master met with David I in Scotland, and was granted the lands of Balantrodach. In 1129, the Council of Troyes formally recognized the Order. Balantrodach became their principal Templar seat and Preceptory in Scotland until the suppression of the order between 1307 and 1312. The church, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, as were all Templars' churches, was a single chambered oblong structure. Arniston House located near Temple was designed by William Adam in 1726 for Robert Dundas, of Arniston, the elder, the Lord President of the Court of Session. The Arniston Estate lands were a royal hunting park in the Middle Ages, and later owned by the Knights Templar, who gave the village of Temple its name. The estate came into the Dundas family in 1571, when they were bought by George Dundas of Dundas Castle. He left the estate to a younger son, James, who built a house and a walled garden here around 1620. The estate was expanded, and improvements were made by James' grandson Robert Dundas in the late 17th century. His son Robert, later the Lord President, continued the improvements, and built the present house.

Corstorphine Hill is a low ridge-shaped hill rising above the western suburbs of Edinburgh, Scotland. Although there has been residential and commercial development on its lower slopes, especially in the south and west, most of the hill is occupied by a local nature reserve, consisting of extensive broadleaf woodland, and is accessible to the public. The hill, which is composed largely of dolerite, was formed by the west-to-east movement of glaciers during the Pleistocene period. There is evidence of prehistoric settlement. Today the hill is popular with walkers, dog-walkers and joggers. Among its interesting features are a 19th-Century tower, a walled garden and a Cold War bunker.
