Places to see in ( Llanelli - UK )

Places to see in ( Llanelli - UK )

Llanelli, the largest town in both the county of Carmarthenshire and the preserved county of Dyfed, Wales, sits on the Loughor estuary on the West Wales coast, approximately 10 miles west-northwest of Swansea and 12 miles (19 km) south-east of the county town, Carmarthen. The town of Llanelli is famous for its proud rugby tradition and is a centre of tinplate production.

Llanelli is surrounded by a number of villages and communities in the Llanelli Rural district. Some of these communities, especially ones that immediately surround the town, are often unofficially referred to as Llanelli. In many respects, Llanelli represents a continuation of the Newport-Cardiff-Swansea metropolitan belt into the more rural West of Wales; or conversely the start of the same.

Over the past decade, the emphasis on heavy industry that once played an important part in the district has changed to an emphasis on creating tertiary sector employment in leisure and tourism. Llanelli is now being developed as a leisure and tourism destination, with many ongoing developments such as the new Llanelli Scarlets rugby stadium, the Old Castle Works leisure village and a National Hunt racecourse at Ffos Las near Trimsaran. Machynys Ponds, a Site of Special Scientific Interest notable for its dragonfly population, is 1 mile (1.6 km) to the south of Llanelli.

The Millennium Coastal Path, which spans 13 miles (21 km) of coastline from Loughor to Pembrey, offers views of the Gower Peninsula and the opportunity for traffic-free cycling. National Wetlands Centre, about 1-mile (1.6 km) east of Llanelli, is one of nine wetland nature reserves managed by the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. Llanelly House is one of Llanelli's most historic properties, an example of an early 18th-century Georgian town house. The house, located directly opposite the parish church, is currently in a poor state of repair, however the town council has recently purchased it with plans to completely restore the house for civic and public use. Parc Howard Museum is set in the grounds of Park Howard.

Llanelli is on the south coast of West Wales and is linked to many national locations via road, rail and air services. Rail provides an important link to the town from Llanelli railway station which is located at Great Western Crescent south of the town centre. Llanelli is connected to the National Cycle Network from the north on NCR 43.

Explore Wales, The Best Places to Visit in Wales

Wales shares a great deal of history with the rest of Great Britain, but the rugged beauty of its landscapes and the open nature of its inhabitants make it a distinctly unique travel destination. For first-time visitors, the most obvious difference between Wales and the other lands in the United Kingdom is the tongue-twisting Welsh language. While everyone speaks English, part of the fun of visiting Wales is learning a few phrases of one of the oldest languages in Europe. Besides its Celtic culture, the country is also famous for the large number of imposing castles. Wales’s scenic mountains, valleys and coastlines are just as enchanting, and no visit to Wales is complete without a long tramp through one of its stunning national parks. Places to see in ( Llandovery - UK )

Places to see in ( Llandovery - UK )

Llandovery is a community and market town in Carmarthenshire, Wales, lying on the River Tywi and the A40/A483 roads. The town is served by Llandovery railway station, where there is a park and ride to Llanelli and Shrewsbury via the Heart of Wales Line. Llandovery — a corruption of Llanymddyfri, meaning Llan ymlith y dyfroedd (Church enclosure amidst the waters) — owes its name to its position between the River Tywi and the Afon Brân just upstream of their confluence. A smaller watercourse, the Bawddwr, runs through and under the town. Llandovery is twinned with Pluguffan in Brittany, France.

Attractions in the town include the remains of Llandovery Castle, built in 1110 and almost immediately captured by the Welsh, changing hands between Normans and Welsh until the reign of King Edward I of England. The castle was used by King Henry IV while on a sortie into Wales when he executed Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan in the marketplace. It was later attacked by the forces of Owain Glyndŵr in 1403.

A 16-foot (4.9 m) high stainless steel statue to Llywelyn ap Gruffydd Fychan was unveiled in 2001 on the north side of Llandovery Castle, overlooking the place of his execution six hundred years earlier. He had led the army of King Henry IV on 'a wild goose chase' under the pretence of leading them to a secret rebel camp and an ambush of Glyndŵr's forces. King Henry lost patience with him, exposed the charade and had him half hanged, disemboweled in front of his own eyes, beheaded and quartered - the quarters salted and dispatched to other Welsh towns for public display.

The Physicians of Myddfai practised in the area. Llandovery is also the place where one of the first independent Welsh banks, The Black Ox, was established by a wealthy drover (later to become part of Lloyds TSB bank). The building is part of the King's Head inn which was the home of The Bank of the Black Ox.

Also in the town are a charity-run theatre (Llandovery Theatre), a heritage centre and Llandovery College. A tourist information and heritage centre is situated in the heart of the town. It houses exhibitions on the Tonn Press, the area's droving history and the nineteenth-century geologist Sir Roderick Impey Murchison, whose work in the area resulted in the assignment of the name Llandovery to rocks of a certain age across the entire world. The Llandovery Epoch is the earliest in the Silurian Period of geological time.

In a small market place in the centre of Llandovery is Llandovery Town Hall (1857-8) by the architect Richard Kyke Penson. There is a courtroom over an open market, in an Italianate style. The building has two storeys with open arcades. At the rear are police cells with iron grilles and entry to the courtroom (now used as a library) under a clock tower. Many visitors use Llandovery as a touring base for the western part of the Brecon Beacons National Park which lies immediately to the south of the town. For others it is a stop en route to Pembrokeshire and West Wales. Large numbers of motorcyclists congregate, particularly at weekends, in the West End cafe on Broad Street, part of the A40. The Dolaucothi Gold Mines are located 10 miles (16 km) away near Pumpsaint on the A482, a road which follows the line of the original Roman road to Llanio fort.

Llandovery lies immediately to the north of Brecon Beacons National Park and Fforest Fawr Geopark, an area whose geological heritage is celebrated. These designated landscapes are centred on Bannau Sir Gâr or the Carmarthen Fans, themselves a part of the Black Mountain, an upland area which extends north towards the town as Mynydd Myddfai and Mynydd Bach Trecastell. The small village of Myddfai is located within the National Park, four miles (6 km) to the south east of Llandovery. The Llyn Brianne dam is 11 miles (18 km) to the North located in rugged and impressive countryside above Rhandir-mwyn. On the journey to the dam, visitors also pass the site of Twm Siôn Cati's Cave at the RSPB's Dinas reserve.

10 HIDDEN PLACES TO SEE IN WALES 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿🥰 #shorts

Places to see in ( Llandeilo - UK )

Places to see in ( Llandeilo - UK )

Llandeilo is a community and town in Carmarthenshire, Wales, situated at the crossing of the River Towy by the A483 on a 19th-century stone bridge. It is adjacent to the westernmost point of the Brecon Beacons National Park. The town is served by Llandeilo railway station on the Heart of Wales Line.

Llandeilo is named after one of the better-known Celtic saints of the 6th century, Saint Teilo. The Welsh word llan signified a monastery or a church. Saint Teilo, who was a contemporary of Saint David, the patron saint of Wales, established a clas (a small monastic settlement) on the site of the present-day parish church.

Dinefwr Castle (anglicized as Dynevor) is a spectacular Welsh castle overlooking the River Tywi near the town. It lies on a ridge on the northern bank of the Tywi, with a steep drop of about 250 feet (76 m) to the river. Dinefwr was the chief seat of the kingdom of Deheubarth and the seat of Rhys ap Gruffydd, one of the early kings of Wales. The foundations of two castra have been discovered in the grounds of the Dinefwr estate, which is in the custody of the National Trust for Places of Historic Interest or Natural Beauty. The estate of Golden Grove lies near the town, and further away, the impressive Carreg Cennen Castle, another Welsh stronghold. The remains of Talley Abbey can be seen 6 miles (9.7 km) away to the north of the town. 10 miles (16 km) further north are the remains of the Roman Dolaucothi Gold Mines, another National Trust property.

The road and railway bridges over the Tywi are of engineering interest. The single-arched Llandeilo Bridge was completed in 1848 and is Grade II* listed. The railway bridge, opened in 1852, is a rare survival of an early lattice truss bridge. Llandeilo hosted the National Eisteddfod of Wales in 1996, held on the meadow across the river at Ffairfach. The town sign was moved to the far side of the bridge at this time.

Llanelli Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Carmarthenshire, and around 10 miles west, and slightly north, of Swansea, is the town of Llanelli.

The name 'Llanelli' is Welsh for 'church of St Elli', in reference to a 6th century saint named St Elli who was a child or grandchild of King Brychan of Brycheiniog - an early post-Roman era kingdom in South Wales. The spelling was anglicised as 'Llanelly' up until 1966 after a successful public campaign to spell it in its Welsh form.

Llanelli grew to prominence in the late 18th century when it became the centre for lead, copper and the tinplate industry. By the latter half of the 19th century it became known as 'Tinopolis' due to the significance of its tin production. Due to its location on the fringe of the South Wales Coal Field, Llanelli played an important role in industry, exporting coal through three small docks along with the copper and tin produced within the town itself. Much of the town's architecture reflects the period in which it grew, including the Victorian town hall, which was built in 1896.

In 1904, Thomas Morris Davies, along with his brother Walter, invented the Stepney Spare Wheel in Llanelli. Their company, Stepney Tyres Ltd moved from Stepney Street in Llanelli to Walthamstow in East London in 1909. Many businesses adopted their idea and eventually all car manufacturers began to provide spare wheels with their cars.

Around the mid-20th century Llanelli was known as the largest town in the world where more than half the population spoke a Celtic language. The town also lays claim to being the site of the first purpose-built supermarket in Wales, from when a Co-op opened on Market Street in 1958.

A Quick Sunset Walk At Llanelli Beach | January 2023 | #thereesfamilyadventures

Join us for a quick sunset walk at Llanelli beach.
It's been quite a while since the weather has been dry and clear enough to sit and watch the sun setting.
The kids and I popped some hot dogs in a flask and walked down to the beach. It was cold but absolutely lush.

You can't beat a walk to the beach to watch the sunset can you?

I trialled a cheap action camera for this video so the footage isn't the highest quality as I don't know how to use it yet! I had to delete a lot of footage as I didn't realise I would need to change the settings for low lighting (all of my other cameras do it automatically) but I was still able to capture some beautiful views.
