10 Things To Do in Lisbon, Portugal WITH THE WHOLE FAAMILY!

✅Best-Selling travel gear
😃Booking.com Deals

Touted as a modern metropolis to rival London and packed with places of interest, Lisbon is a city that is really going places. There is a plethora of history here, with tales of everything from Roman imperialists to exotic Berber pirates, Moorish builders to fierce Reconquista knights, all wrapped up in the grand palaces and heritage districts.

Welcome to things to do Channel, today we’re going to list ten things to do in Lisbon.

#10 Ride at Tram 28.

Like San Francisco in the United States, Lisbon is a city famed for its historic, rattling tram lines. None are more iconic than Tram 28 which has been working its way up the steep, cobbled roads and into the old Alfama district for decades.

#9 Shop at Feira de Ladra.

Polish your haggling skills for a trip to Feira da Ladra, because this sprawling midweek and weekend market is the place to go for quirky, curious and often downright weird trinkets and antiques.

#8 See the glory of Sintra.

Despite being a totally different city and situated more than half an hour away from Lisbon by car, the glorious town of Sintra remains one of the major attractions here. Day Trips are common, while others will want to spend a couple of days exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

#7 Check out the Lisbon Oceanarium.

Located out in the blue waters of the Tagus Estuary, the huge Lisbon Oceanarium rises like a hulking aircraft carrier. Inside, the structure houses countless exhibits related to marine life, which together pull in over one million visitors each year. You can get up close to colorful pufferfish as well as watch the marauding sharks.

#6 Meet the tides at Caxias.

Grab a board, wax it down, and don some board shorts or preferably a wetsuit, because the waters where the Tagus Estuary meets the Atlantic Ocean can get pretty chilly. Nestled just to the west of Lisbon central, this pretty enclave of sand and sea is where most of the capital’s wave riders will retreat at the weekend.

#5 Have a drink at Bairro Alto.

Apart from being the premier touristic district of Lisbon, packed with alfresco cafes and international restaurants, the Bairro Alto is also the city’s top nightlife spot. You’ll typically have to wait until early evening for the establishments to really get started, but when they do, it’s all about the authentic pastelaria bakeries and the bohemian drinking joints.

#4 Stroll around Rossio.

The plane tree peppered Rossio Square is where Lisbon’s local life ticks over each day. Officially titled Pedro IV Square, the spot marks the very heart of the Pombaline Lower Town, which spreads out in wide boulevards between the Tagus and Baixa rivers.

#3 Wonder at the masterworks of the National Museum of Ancient Art.

The National Museum of Ancient Art is the home of Portugal’s prestigious national art collection. Pieces here range from pious saintly depictions by Nuno Gonçalves to chiaroscuro portraiture by Josefa de Óbidos. Most of the canvases date from between the 16th and 19th centuries and came into public ownership following the Liberal Wars that rocked the country in the early modern age. Patrons here can also enjoy countless traveling exhibitions, with past collections reflecting Lisbon in the Renaissance period as well as featuring historical paintings from the Age of Discovery.

#2 Get lost in the Alfama District.

The compact little Alfama District is Lisbon’s answer to the old town centers of Europe’s other ancient capitals. Like the Forum of Rome, it’s hailed as the oldest part of the city, although this one dates back to the Moors of Africa instead of the kings of Latium. Delving into the warren of winding streets and alleys that forms the district is one of the top activities for visitors to Portugal’s capital. As you stroll, great cathedrals like the Lisbon Cathedral and tile-fronted chapels reveal themselves on the corners. There are also the remains of old city walls and hidden squares with alfresco cafes aplenty.

#1 Wonder at the Torre de Belém.

If there is just one landmark you visit when touring through the Portuguese capital, make it this one. It has stood watch over the mouth of the Tagus River since its construction under the patronage of Saint John back in the 16th century. Since then, it has risen to become perhaps the most iconic feature of the city, famed as the last sight adventurers like the prodigal Vasco da Gama would have seen as they drifted out into the vast Atlantic Ocean

MORE ABOUT THIS VIDEO 😃
⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯⋯
Have you been to Lisbon? It’s an incredible food city. And recently we launched our first Devour Tour there - our Tastes & Traditions of Lisbon Food Tour. And to celebrate it, I decided to make a video along with Ellis Dixon, our wonderful local manager and Lisbon expert.

So, where did we go?

1. Confeitaria Nacional: This place has been open since the early 1800s and it’s a fantastic place to start your day - a bica (espresso) and a pastry surrounded by gorgeous turn-of-the-century decor.
2. Ginjinha Sem Rival: I love this tiny little shop where you can get a bottle of Portugal’s famous cherry liqueur - and also take a shot of it at the bar. This place has been going since 1840!
3. O Trevo: You have to eat a bifana sandwich when you’re in Lisbon. It’s simple, but delicious - stewed pork, and then you douse it in piri piri sauce and yellow mustard. And this was the place Anthony Bourdain visited!
4. Casa Pereira: I love how this old shop smells like coffee, tea and chocolate. And the walls are lined with incredible bottles of port. So if you want to grab a bottle of port while in the city, this is your place!
5. Trobadores: This place is straight out of Game of Thrones. And despite seemingly a little tacky, it’s actually a place locals come to. You can drink mead (fermented honey) and grill chorizo sausage right at your table!
6. Bonjardim: Piri piri chicken is famous, and if you’re going to get it in Lisbon (and you should), this is the place! The chicken was so deliciously juicy, and the skin fabulously spicy.
7. O Gaiteiro: I love a good old school restaurant. And in Lisbon these tascas the best spots to order grilled fish: sardines, salt-cold and octopus. O Gaiteiro is a place we visit on Devour’s Lisbon food tour and it’s fantastic - great food, full of local clients.
8. Sol e Pesca: This former fishing shop still looks like… a fishing shop. Apart from the enormous display of canned fish. And please, don’t be afraid of canned fish - it can be absolutely delicious, and this is the place to try it!
9. Manteigaria: Custard tarts are everywhere in Lisbon, but not all custard tarts are created equal. These ones from Manteigaria have a wonderfully crispy and flaky pastry, and custard is like delicious molten lava. A plus, you can watch them making them through the glass window.

Lisbon, Portugal | Historical Tour Documentary | American Explorer: Abroad

First off, thanks for watching. Second, I apologize for my poor pronunciation. I tried to look up linguistics for some words but I’m sure my midwestern US accent came through on some.

Also this is not nearly an extensive history of portugal. It’s abridged heavily and my resources ranged from wikipedia to a tour guide and just anecdotes from people I met in Portugal. I welcome all corrections and discussions regarding the history of Lisbon and Portugal as a whole. Definitely not meant to be a source of truth for facts. This video is meant to pique interests and start conversations, not end them. Some sources cited below.

Special thanks to the Kirkland clan and the people of Portugal for being such awesome hosts.
