Delicious Sparkling Wine (Blanquette de Limoux) at Sieur d'Arques Wine Cellar - Limoux, France

Now on to the beautiful villages of Occitanie, France - Food, People & History.
Quite a few departements, or districts, along the Pyrenees mountains and the Mer Mediterranee form what we call l’Occitanie. The weather, the scenery, the food, the people are all beautiful, and it is very rich in history.
So, I chose a few stops along the road that I would love to share with you in this video…
Starting with Limoux, famous for its white sparkling wine, before champagne was even born.
Then Arques, a small village, home to a castle with a main square tower which dates back to the 13th century…
The old bridge of Cassaigne…
The Pierre Lys Gorge…
And this is Villefranche de Conflent, a medieval town with an impressive, rather secure gate to the city, … its narrow streets … totally quaint and picturesque.
This was a station for merchants and traders to calibrate their rulers accurately and sell their goods in all fairness in regard to price and quantity. This particular area lived on the textile industry, canvas, ribbons, iron, and leather.
Not surprisingly one of the most beautiful villages of France, Villefranche de Conflent is also a marvel of military architecture, classified by the UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
I hope you enjoyed this video.
Please leave a comment, make some suggestions on some subjects that you would like me to develop, and give me the thumbs up to keep these videos coming.
Last but not least, remember to visit my website, travel, speak French, read my blog, SHOP… There is so much to do on VoilaByCoco.com.
That’s it for now!
A big thank you!

Carcassonne is a fortified French town in the Aude department, of which it is the prefecture, in the Region of Occitanie.
Carcassonne is located in the south of France, about 80 kilometres east from the city of Toulouse.
Its strategic location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea has been known since the neolithic era.
Inhabited since the Neolithic period, Carcassonne is located in the Aude plain between historic trade routes, linking the Atlantic to the Mediterranean sea and the Massif Central to the Pyrénées.
Its strategic importance was quickly recognized by the Romans who occupied its hilltop until the demise of the Western Roman Empire and was later taken over in the fifth century by the Visigoths who founded the city.
Its strategic location led successive rulers to expand its fortifications until the Treaty of the Pyrenees in 1659.
The fortified city itself consists essentially of a concentric design of two outer walls with 53 towers and barbicans to prevent attack by siege engines.
The castle itself possesses its own drawbridge and ditch leading to a central keep.
The walls consist of towers built over quite a long period.
One section is Roman and is notably different from the medieval walls with the tell-tale red brick layers and the shallow pitch terracotta tile roofs.
One of these towers housed the Catholic Inquisition in the 13th century and is still known as The Inquisition Tower.
Carcassonne was the first fortress to use hoardings in times of siege.
Temporary wooden ramparts would be fitted to the upper walls of the fortress through square holes beneath the rampart itself.
It provided protection to defenders on the wall and allowed defenders to go out past the wall to drop projectiles on attackers at the wall beneath.
The city is famous for the Cité de Carcassonne, a medieval fortress restored by the theorist and architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc in 1853 and added to the UNESCO list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.
Consequently, Carcassonne relies heavily on tourism but also counts manufacture and wine-making as some of its other key economic sectors.

3. Limoux, France
Still editing these on my iPhone and uploading them DAY-OF. Enjoy!
A visit to Limoux in Occitanie, Episode 277
Limoux is a city of about 10,000 not far from Carcassonne. If you’re exploring the southwest of France, this is another great stop where you can enjoy genuine France and really get to know the French countryside.
Limoux in Occitanie Limoux is in the Aude department and is part of the Occitanie Region. The Aude covers a large area west of Castelnaudary and all the way to the Mediterranean. Other cities in the Aude are Lézignan, Narbonne and Carcassonne.
The landscape around Limoux is hilly, and is a type of garrigue meaning that it's a mediterranean landscape. The city is not heavily populated, Limoux is mostly agricultural, but has a fair amount of tourism as well. But we don't mean Eiffel Tower tourism, but rather the kind of wonderful rural tourism where visitors go to stay a while and enjoy the local culture, hikes, and nature.
The local rivers are called the Aude and the Cougoing and that is one of the reasons why the city floods fairly regularly. The local Abbey is called Saint Hilaire and is a little bit outside of the town.
The area followed the Cathar religion and was a victim of repression against the Cathars. It is know as Cathar Country that is part historical and part lore. One of these days we'll do an episode about the Cathars, but it's hard to untangle what is fact from what is stories.
La Blanquette de Limoux The local wine blanquette de Limoux is famous (and for good reason as we discuss in the episode!) The soil around Limoux is great for grape vines and olive trees because the soil is poor and does not retain water.
Fun Fact: Thomas Jefferson imported 600 bottles of Blanquette de Limoux into America because he considered it to be the best white wine he had ever tasted.
The blanquette de Limoux was the first white wine in France to receive and AOC or Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée. They have both a sparkling and non-sparkling wine.
Le Carnaval de Limoux The Carnaval de Limoux pre-dates all the carnivals in France and dates back to the 1500s. It starts late January and runs until Easter and goes on every week-end. They use white masks to indicate what band or club they belong to.
Alet-les-Bains Alet-les-Bains is a place where there are baths and this started with the Romans. They have a lovely Abbey, it's in ruins but you can visit it. Between Limoux and Alet-les-Bains you get a lovely view of the area.

Private Guide World :: Exploring the Medieval Wonders of Carcassonne with a Local Tour Guide
Exploring the Medieval Wonders of Carcassonne with a Local Tour Guide
If you're planning a trip to Southern France, one of the must-see destinations is the medieval Carcassonne. Uncovered in the province of Occitanie, this strengthened metropolis dates back to the Gallo-Roman era and is now a UNESCO World Heritage site. If you want to appreciate the past, architecture, and atmosphere of this uncopied city, we highly recommend taking a private excursion with a local English-speaking guide in Carcassonne.
As you enter the city, you'll be struck by its unique walls and watchtowers, which were constructed in the 13th century. Your tour guide will explain that these walls were built to protect Carcassonne from invasion during the Hundred Years' War. You'll also learn that the village played an important role at the time of the Albigensian Crusade when it was a bastion of the Cathar heresy.
As you walk through the little streets and alleyways of the old city, your personal English-speaking tour guide in Carcassonne will point out the various historic memorials and tell you fascinating stories about them. For example, you'll see the Château Comtal, which was the residence of the city's lords during the Middle Ages. Your tour guide will explain that the chateau was constructed before 1125 and rebuilt by a famous French architect 8 centuries later.
Another highlight of your individual guided tour in English is the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire. This Romanesque church was built in the 12th century and includes some of the finest stained glass windows in France. Your local tour guide, for sure, will tell you about the past of the church and the stories behind the stained glass windows. The Basilica of Saint-Nazaire is a Romanesque-Gothic church found in the old townlet of Carcassonne. It is one of the main religious buildings of this metropolis and is world-famous for its unique architecture and rich history.
