Best places to visit

Best places to visit - Lido di Ostia (Italy) Best places to visit - Slideshows from all over the world - City trips, nature pictures, etc.

A Day on the Beach Near Rome - Ostia

Ostia is a beach near Rome. In fact it’s so close to Rome proper that it’s considered a part of Rome.

Many locals commute daily to work from here to Rome and Romans go in the opposite direction to get some tan before they leave for vacation. Ostia is easily accessible from Rome by car and also by train. Obviously there are buses too.

The beach is usually packed in the summer but it’s well organized and it has changing rooms, lockers and all sorts of coffee shops and restaurants. Ostia city center is within walking distance from the beach and it’s packed with further choice of coffee shops and restaurants.

A typical lunch here is spaghetti all vongole (clams spaghetti) and in fact it makes a part of the whole experience. Many stay for their sunset aperitivo to proudly display the sun tan they worked so hard on the whole day. Like most things here it's kind of a big deal and Romans go through a considerable trouble to look their best even for a simple drink.

The visual effect, I guess, is the part of the deal and it's quite high even though Ostia is not an elite beach spot by any stretch of imagination. A DJ will provide an obnoxious sound wall behind your aperitif, so forget about enjoying the sound of waves and seagulls.

It all, of course, leads to a dinner by the waves but that's another story....

Beach Walk in Ostia Rome | Roma-Ostia 2023 | Best beaches near Rome, Italy | LIDO DI OSTIA ROMA

**Ostia** is a coastal district of **Rome** located about 25 kilometers (15 miles) from the city center. It is famous for its long sandy beaches, ancient Roman ruins, and proximity to both the Mediterranean Sea and the historic core of Rome. Ostia offers a mix of beachside relaxation and historical exploration, making it a popular destination for both Romans and tourists.

### Key Highlights of Ostia:

#### 1. **Ostia Antica (Ancient Ostia)**
- **Ostia Antica** is one of the most significant archaeological sites in Italy. It was once the ancient **port city of Rome**, serving as the main seaport during the Roman Republic and Empire.
- Founded around the 4th century BC, Ostia Antica flourished as a commercial hub. Over time, it was abandoned due to silting of the Tiber River and attacks, leaving it well-preserved under layers of silt.
- Today, Ostia Antica is an open-air museum featuring:
- **Ancient streets** lined with the remains of Roman houses, shops, and warehouses.
- **Amphitheater**: A well-preserved Roman theater where performances still take place during the summer.
- **Baths of Neptune**: These public baths have intricate mosaic floors depicting Neptune, the Roman god of the sea.
- **The Capitolium**: A temple dedicated to Jupiter, Juno, and Minerva, the main gods of Roman religion.
- **Forum**: The political and commercial heart of ancient Ostia, surrounded by temples, markets, and public buildings.
- It offers visitors a rare glimpse into everyday life in Ancient Rome, similar to **Pompeii**, but without the volcanic destruction.

#### 2. **Ostia Lido (Lido di Ostia)**
- **Lido di Ostia** is the modern beach resort area of Ostia. It’s the closest seaside destination for Romans and is especially busy in the summer.
- **Beaches**: Lido di Ostia offers several kilometers of sandy beaches along the Mediterranean coast. Some beaches are free (spiaggia libera), while others are private with sunbeds, umbrellas, and amenities for rent.
- **Boardwalk and Promenade**: A lively area along the seafront, lined with cafes, restaurants, and bars, where visitors can enjoy seafood, Italian gelato, and aperitifs while watching the sunset.
- **Water Sports and Activities**: The area is also popular for activities like windsurfing, kite surfing, and beach volleyball.

#### 3. **Connection to Rome**
- Ostia is well-connected to central Rome via public transportation. The **Ostia Lido train line** (a branch of the Rome metro system) connects Rome's **Piramide Station** to Ostia, making it a quick and easy day trip from the city.
- The proximity to Rome makes Ostia a unique mix of ancient history and beach leisure. Many visitors use it as a base for exploring both the coastal and historic attractions of the region.

#### 4. **Fiumicino Airport**
- **Leonardo da Vinci International Airport (Fiumicino Airport)** is located nearby, making Ostia a convenient stop for travelers arriving or departing from Rome by air. Many people stay in Ostia due to its proximity to the airport and the easy access to both Rome and the coastline.

#### 5. **Local Atmosphere**
- Ostia has a relaxed, beach-town vibe, especially compared to the busy and historic center of Rome. It’s popular with Romans during the summer months as a weekend retreat from the city’s heat.
- While Ostia is modern in parts, it also retains a small-town feel with local markets, seafood restaurants, and a more laid-back pace of life.

#### 6. **Historical and Cultural Landmarks**
- **Castello di Giulio II**: A medieval castle located in the town of Ostia Antica. Built in the 15th century, it was originally a fortress designed to protect the Tiber River's mouth and the surrounding area.
- **Basilica of Sant’Aurea**: A small but historic church located near the castle in Ostia Antica.

### Why Visit Ostia?
Ostia offers a unique blend of history and relaxation. It’s a great option for those wanting to explore ancient Roman ruins without traveling far from Rome and for visitors looking to enjoy a day at the beach. Whether you’re interested in history, beach activities, or Italian coastal cuisine, Ostia has something for everyone.********************
