Guyana: The Long Road to Lethem

We spent eight days driving and sleeping in a tiny rental car to get from Georgetown (on the coast) to Lethem (on the Brazilian border).

Guyana is a rough, beautiful, jungle nation in South America that can be horribly expensive for the traveler.

As such, it's one of the least-visited countries on earth!

But rental cars are affordable, and you can drive anywhere. Outside of Georgetown, Guyana is very safe, and people are friendly, helpful and everyone speaks English.

Highlights of our trip included:
-looking for the Cock-of-the-Rock bird
-packrafting the Pirara River
-severe thunderstorm in Kumu
-wildlife spotting in Surama
-accidentally staying in a brostel in Lethem
-surviving 800 miles of driving on the left!

Guyana, a country on South America’s North Atlantic coast, is defined by its dense rainforest. English-speaking, with cricket and calypso music, it's culturally connected to the Caribbean region. Its capital, Georgetown, is known for British colonial architecture, including tall, painted-timber St. George’s Anglican Cathedral. A large clock marks the facade of Stabroek Market, a source of local produce.

10 Things to Do in Guyana

Get more Tips here!
Guyana is one of those destinations you wouldn't think as first on the list. However, this Caribbean country will surprised you for sure. Have a look of the things you can do there.

1) Spot the local wildlife
Not only the landscapes are beautiful, the fauna of Guyana is impressive. You should go there and it will surprise you with unique animals such as an anteater, a giant river otters, a harpy eagle, cock-of-the rock birds, black caymans and even a jaguar.

2) Go hiking
Althought the weather is very hot and wet, it's still a must do in Guyana. You can go to the Dolomites. Sometimes it has hard paths that will test your resistance. But in the end it will worth it. After a long day of hiking, you can always reward you with a nice meal, right?

3) Go on a boat ride
The best way to move around Guyana is by boat. If you go to the Rupununi rivers you won't regret it at all. Its local flora and fauna will amaze you as well as the beautiful landscapes that will surround you all the way, and make you feel alive.

4) Explore Georgetown
It's capital is a place you shouldn't miss. I's a colorful city full of local markets such as Bourda and Starbroek Market. Also, St. George’s Cathedral is one of the top Guyana tourist attractions and a must see. Plus a lot of more places to see. So, don't forget about it.

5) Walk through the forest
Well, taking into account its big jungle, of course, we recomendo you to go there and explore it. For sure, it will be kind of a new feeling for you. Inside the jungle birdwatching is a must do. But don't forget about the insects and muddy ground. Go prepared or don't go. We warned you...

6) Don't forget the canopy of Iwokrama
The Iwokrama Rainforest is a great way to appreciate the nature. You'll find a series of suspension bridges hoisted 30 meters above the forest floor from where where you could take the best pictures ever. The starting point is located at about 1 km from the lodge, via a walk in the forest and a staircase of around 160 steps.

7) Go to Kaieteur Falls
These are nothing like the Iguazu Falls or the Victoria Falls which are already wonderful. These falls will blow your mind with their spectacular views. The easiest way to go there is to taking a small plane in Georgetown, or you can always do a 5-day overland journey up river and go hiking.

8) Try the local food
Guyana melts different cultures in its food, such as Caribbean, Indian... and that will only get you licking your plate because of this absolutely delicious food full of tropical fruit and vegetables. However, keep in mind that the word “bake” in fact means fried dough of bread so that you won't have any misunderstanding

9) Sleep in hammocks
This is how most of the indigenous communities sleep and you should try it too. This experience is like being one to one with nature, alone in the dark, in harmony with the environment. It's one of the most special sensations that you can experience. Just do it!

10) Go to Rewa
Located in the North Rupununi region of Guyana, you must take an hour and 15 minutes flight on a 13 seater and a one hour boat ride along the Rupununi River, because it's completely isolated: no cars; no phone and no internet connection. But this is one of the most beautiful places to visit in Guyana to appreciate the wild nature and outdoor activities.

Would you ever thought you could do all of these in Guyana?

Guyana | Stranded In The Middle Of The Jungle With A Smuggler - Country #38 to Visit All Countries

In this video, you'll see and see my adventures in Guyana which is my country #38 in my quest to visit all 193 UN-recognized countries around the world. My time in Guyana is the most insane travel experience I've ever had in my life. I ended up taking a van to Georgetown from Lethem and turns out the driver that drove me and the passengers were a smuggler. He was caught by a police checkpoint in the middle of the jungle at 2am at night leaving myself and the other passengers stranded. We were attacked by mosquitoes that lay an egg inside your skin and if you scratch it off, you'll have an open wound for a week. If you don't scratch it off, then the eggs will hatch. The only way out of this jungle area was to get lucky and hitchhike the next morning.

Lethem - Georgetown Trail - 15 minutes towards Lethem from Kurupukari

I shot this video on the 21st of November, 2017, as I traveled with Carly Bus Service down the Lethem-Georgetown trail.

The video is not the best of quality, but it gives you an idea of what the trail looks like at this time. Who knows what the trail will be like in the future, whether better or worse! It is good to preserve a piece of history!

This video was shot as we exited the pontoon at the Kurupukari crossing and headed for Lethem - just 15 minutes of the 4-hours drive.

Kanuku Mountain Climb at Moco Moco Village 999 Steps - TJSH

Climbing the 999 steps at the old Moco Moco Village Hydropower Plant. The hydropower plant was constructed on the Kanuku Mountain and commissioned in 1999. In 2003, after a landslide due to severe rainfall, the penstock was dislodged and the plant was rendered inoperable. More recently, plans are being put in place to rehabilitate the hydro plant to provide power/electricity to Lethem and nearby villages.

GUYANA LINDEN-LETHEM TRAIL

Hey there, welcome! Last September, I revisited Guyana for round two.

I started my trip with Cricket Carnival, then ventured deep into Guyana's interior. Back to Georgetown, I hopped over to Suriname, drove to French Guiana, swung by Suriname again, returned to Guyana, and wrapped up the month in Trinidad.

This video owes its existence to the incredible support of Waikin Ranch. I extend my heartfelt gratitude for their exceptional hospitality and meticulous coordination of all my activities in the Rupununi region. Throughout my stay, I was overwhelmed by the warmth, safety, and comfort they provided.
I hope this video serves as a valuable resource for those embarking on the adventurous journey through the Amazon. It offers a comprehensive glimpse of my experience navigating the Linden-Lethem road, South America's most legendary trail. My aim is to assist fellow travelers in preparing for this exhilarating expedition. Please watch the entire video to gain insights into what to expect while traversing the rainforest.
Our journey lasted a remarkable 14 hours during the dry season in October. In contrast, the wet season extends the travel time to a challenging 20 hours, often involving treacherous mud obstacles that might necessitate rescue.

Stay tuned for more videos of this epic journey - subscribe so you don't miss out! 🌴📹✈️🌎🎉 #AdventureAwaits
