Se ami i piccoli borghi devi visitare Leonforte, in Sicilia. Fondato nel 17esimo secolo dal principe Niccolò Placido Branciforti, è un paese solenne, dorato e arrampicato sul pendio di una collina, dominato dalla imponente bellezza della Gran Fonte, un abbeveratoio monumentale costruito a metà del 1600 da dove ininterrottamente sgorga acqua limpida da 24 cannelle di bronzo. Ti consiglio di andarci di mattina, quando il sole fa brillare le pietre e gli archi inquadrano un panorama di cieli alti e turchesi. O al tramonto, che la tinge di rosso oro.
Poi risali verso piazza Margherita, costruita a forma circolare sul modello dei Quattro canti di Palermo. Visita Palazzo Branciforte, la Chiesa Madre San Giovanni Battista, la Gran Fonte e Porta Garibaldi, la Chiesa di Santo Stefano.
Attorno a Leonforte c’è una splendida campagna dove si producono grano, olio ma soprattutto prodotti di nicchia come la fava larga (con cui preparare un gustoso macco di fave siciliano) e la pesca settembrina Igp (tardiva) che vi ho raccontato qualche reel fa. L’antica Leonforte è uno dei tanti luoghi incantati dell’entroterra siciliano. Quante cose da scoprire in questa parte di Sicilia.

ENGLISH - If you love small villages you must visit Leonforte, in Sicily. Founded in the 17th century by Prince Niccolò Placido Branciforti, it is a solemn, golden town perched on the slope of a hill, dominated by the imposing beauty of the Gran Fonte, a monumental trough built in the mid-1600s from where clear water flows continuously from 24 spouts of bronze. I recommend going there in the morning, when the sun makes the stones shine and the arches frame a panorama of high, turquoise skies. Or at sunset, which dyes it red gold.
Then go back up towards Piazza Margherita, built in a circular shape on the model of the Quattro Canti of Palermo. Visit Palazzo Branciforte, the Mother Church of San Giovanni Battista, the Gran Fonte and Porta Garibaldi, the Church of Santo Stefano.
Around Leonforte there is a splendid countryside where wheat, oil but above all niche products are produced such as broad broad bean (with which to prepare a tasty Sicilian broad bean macco) and PGI September peach (late) which I told you about a few reels ago . Ancient Leonforte is one of the many enchanted places in the Sicilian hinterland. How many things to discover in this part of Sicily.

Which cities to see in Sicily - My itinerary
MY 8 DAYS ITINERARY AROUND SICILY AND AEOLIAN ISLANDS or a list of BEST CITIES TO VISIT IN SICILY
Day 1: Landing in Palermo, rent a car and spend the day in Cefalu (distance: 73km, 1h 13min). In the evening continue to Milazzo (135km, 1h 35min) which is right next to the ferry boat leaving for the Aeolian islands the following morning.
Day 2: Ferry trip from Milazzo to Vulcano. It’s the closest of the Aeolian Islands to mainland Sicily and makes an ideal day trip location.
Day 3: Start early from Milazzo to Taormina, spend the day getting lost in the medieval streets and admiring the Greek-Roman amphitheatre that overlooks volcano Etna. Continue your drive to Catania (duration: 54km, 50min) and spend the night there.
Day 4: Early morning for coffee in the main square and a glimpse of a typical Sicilian fish market in Catania. You won’t be disappointed! Continue to Syracuse (distance: 67km, 52min) and enjoy one of the most beautiful Sicilian cities!
Day 5: Syracuse to Piazza Armerina (distance: 147km, 1h 43min) walk around the small city-rain or sun, you won’t be disappointed. Don’t forget to visit Villa Romana in the suburbs.
Day 6: Piazza Armerina to Palermo or Monreale
Day 7-8: Visit the iconic sights of Palermo. Also if you haven't jet - eat, breathe, live pizza and pasta!

This is the Itinerary I created for our road trip around Sicily last November and it turned out perfect!
Nevertheless Sicily has so much more to offer than we squeezed in this short 8 days vacation. If you plan to visit in the Summer, I strongly suggest to go see the Turkish steps (Scala dei Turci) and if you're all about temples don't miss out on the southwest of the Island.

Agira is a town and comune in the province of Enna, Sicily. It is located in the mid-valley of the River Salso, 35 kilometres from Enna. Until 1861 it was called San Filippo d'Argiriò, in honour of its saint Philip of Agira. The modern city overlies the ancient one of which few traces remain.

A magical Sicilian Cassata in Enna [with panorama view over Calascibetta]
A thing, among many we love about Italy, is that one can eat great food while on the road. It takes some quick research a bit prior to actually getting hungry, an internet connection and a small portion of luck 😜 This is what got us to Enna and Il Mito di Kore. (By the way, Kore is in Greek mythology a daughter of Zeus & Demetra.)
From up the hill a beautiful panorama view opened over the valley and over Calascibetta, the neighbor village. So here in mid-day, we ate a hybrid meal between a late lunch and an early dinner. An excellent Melanzane alla parmigiana (the famous eggplant gratin), a nice local pasta specialty -N'casciata with anchovies, seasoned cheese and pine nuts.
But the crown jewel was the Sicilian Cassata - here served in a jar, filled with layers of sweet ricotta, sponge cake and almond paste. Brilliant!

Granfonte was a public fountain that was built in the Renaissance-Baroque style. Locals come here to fill bottles of water. In the past, horses were brought here to drink from the fountain.

In Sicily's dramatic hinterland, not far from Enna, sits Agira, an age-old hill-top town, once a thriving Greek colony boasting a population of over 10,000 and important enough during Roman times for Cicero to mention it in his book In Verrem.
Agira itself is certainly worth a visit with its numerous churches, including two fine Norman examples, the remains of an Arab-Byzantine fortress and a synagogue, testifying to the presence of a Jewish population several hundred years ago.

Located in the middle of Sicily and situated on top of a cliff - Enna has a stunning panoramic view of green rolling hills, farm land, small towns and mount Etna. It was totally worth the detour!!
