Driving through Hampshire

Hampshire (/ˈhæmpʃər/, /-ʃɪər/ (About this sound listen); abbreviated Hants)[a] is a county on the southern coast of England in the United Kingdom. The county town of Hampshire is Winchester, the former capital city of England. Hampshire is the most populous ceremonial county in the United Kingdom (excluding the metropolitan counties) with almost half of the county's population living within the South Hampshire conurbation which includes the cities of Southampton and Portsmouth.[1] The larger South Hampshire metropolitan area has a population of 1,547,000.[2] Hampshire is notable for housing the birthplaces of the Royal Navy, British Army, and Royal Air Force. It is bordered by Dorset to the west, Wiltshire to the north-west, Berkshire to the north, Surrey to the north-east, and West Sussex to the east. The southern boundary is the coastline of the English Channel and the Solent, facing the Isle of Wight.

Hampshire is the largest county in South East England and remains the third largest shire county in the United Kingdom despite losing more land than any other English county in all contemporary boundary changes. At its greatest size in 1890, Hampshire was the fifth-largest county in England. It now has an overall area of 3,700 km2 (1,400 sq mi),[3] and measures about 86 km (53 mi) east–west and 76 km (47 mi) north–south.[4]

Hampshire's tourist attractions include many seaside resorts and two national parks: the New Forest and the South Downs (together covering some 45% of the county). Hampshire has a long maritime history, and two of Europe's largest ports, Portsmouth and Southampton, lie on its coast. The county is famed as home of writers Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, as well as the birthplace of engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel.

Places to see in ( Lee on the Solent - UK )

Places to see in ( Lee on the Solent - UK )

Lee-on-the-Solent, often referred to as Lee-on-Solent, is a small seaside district within the Borough of Gosport in Hampshire, England about five miles west of Portsmouth. The area is located on the coast of the Solent. It is primarily a residential area, with an upsurge of mostly local visitors in summer, but is well known as the former home to the Royal Naval Air Station HMS Daedalus (renamed as HMS Ariel from 1959 to 1965).

The district gained its name in the 19th century, during attempts to develop the area into a seaside resort. The area had been referenced long before this, referred to as Lee and numerous variations, including Lebritan. Early impetus for the district's development came from Charles Edmund Newton Robinson, who persuaded his father, John Charles Robinson, art curator and collector, to fund the buying of land.

Lee-on-the Solent has had a long association with aviation. Seaplane trials took place at Lee-on-the-Solent as early as 1915. A base for seaplane training was established in 1917 on the former RNAS Lee-on-Solent, formerly HMS Daedalus, site.

In 1935 the Lee Tower complex was built on the seafront next to the old pier and railway station. It was designed by architects Yates, Cook & Derbyshire, and comprised a white v-shaped Art Deco building with a 120-foot (37 m) tower. The complex housed a cinema, ballroom and restaurant, as well as a viewing platform at the tower's peak. The complex was demolished in 1971 by Gosport Borough Council, with its land now used for the promenade and remembrance gardens.

The views out to sea from the cliffs at Marine Parade are forever changing and are always interesting. From a vantage point on the grassy banks, it is possible to see shipping movements of large container ships and cruisers into Southampton and Portsmouth, sailing boats, ferries and of course the backdrop of the Isle of Wight. The seafront on Marine Parade East is where the Club House is situated for the Lee on the Solent Sailing Club LOSSC.

At the signal station, where the racing starts and finishes can be found a smaller galley that can provide light snacks and soft drinks for the people involved in racing or training of adults and youngsters at the weekend. It is a RYA accredited Sailing School and is open to visitors and day sailors alike. Boats can be hired if you would like to get on the water during hot summers.

On Marine Parade West main sea front stands the Commonwealth War Graves Commission's Lee-on-Solent Memorial erected to commemorate the 1,926 men of the Fleet Air Arm who died in various parts of the world in World War II and have no known grave.

Solent Way - Lee-on-Solent to Warsash - Weekend Walk 35

Continuing the Solent Way after a break for winter, this is the fourth stage. I started around 10am from Lee on Solent, past Hill Head, Titchfield Haven, Meon Shore, Brownwich Cliffs, Chilling Cliffs, Hook, and on to Warsash. From just north of the village, the Solent Way goes via ferry to Hamble, but I stopped today on the eastern shore. On the way I saw dogs (many), jetskis, birds, helicopters, the Isle of Wight, the nature reserve, erodind cliffs, fawley power station, oil refinery, and the village of Warsash. Stage 3 of the Solent Way, from the Gosport side of Portsmouth Harbour to Lee on Solent, via Haslar's Naval Bases and Marina, former hospital and prison, forts Monckton and Gilkicker, Browndown, and the coastline of Stokes Bay at Alverstoke. Apologies for the wind noise - I'm working on a solution. Cotton wool over the mic helps somewhat. Apologies too for the dust into the sun - it's not on the lens but inside...

Join me as I visit the Hovercraft Museum. This museum in England is the only Hovercraft Museum in the world. It houses the massive cross channel hovercraft, the Princess Anne snr4 Hovercraft. Which has to be seen to be believed, it's massive!

To visit:

Amongst this vast collection I see The Princess Anne SRN4 MK 3, the largest commercial car carrying hovercraft ever built. The Griffon 2000TDX once used by the Royal Marines. The SNR5 used to train pilots and The James Bond Craft used in the 2002 film Die Another Day.
