Matera | Italy | Travel Guide

My name is Gabe and on this channel i'm showing you where to travel 2022 and how
can you solo travel with a drone in Matera , Italy
I'm not a travel guru, however i'm trying to find
the most underrated cities and destination and present them in my solo travel vlog.

Considering subscribing for best backpacking destinations.

Matera is a place where the past, present, and future meet.
In 1993, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in 2019, it was selected as the European Capital of Culture, further increasing its popularity.Even the last James Bond film was shot there. The fact that Matera is a biblical-looking city constructed completely out of calcarenites
is even more incredible. In other words, it was carved out of relatively soft volcanic sedimentary rocks that were simple to extract and cut.It has an ingenious system of caves, corridors, and reservoirs on the inside that allow
water to be collected, resulting in a true underground city.

Places to see in ( Taranto - Italy )

Places to see in ( Taranto - Italy )

Taranto is a coastal city in Apulia, Southern Italy. It is the capital of the Province of Taranto and is an important commercial port as well as the main Italian naval base. Taranto is an important commercial and military port. It has well-developed steel and iron foundries, oil refineries, chemical works, some shipyards for building warships, and food-processing factories. In ancient times around 500 BC the city was one of the largest in the world with population estimates up to 300,000 people.

The Old Town or Città Vecchia is where the Greeks built their acropolis. To date it has the same lay out as it did in 967, when the Byzantines under Nicephorus Phocas rebuilt what the Saracen troops led by the Slavic Sabir had razed to the ground in 927 AD. There are four main arteries (Corso Vittorio II, Via Duomo, Via di Mezzo and Via Garibaldi) which run in a straight direction however the side streets were purposely built narrow and winding to impede the passage of an invading army.

Incorporating the Aragon Castle, Doric Columns and Piazza Fontana, it is situated and entirely enclosed on the artificial island between the Big and Little Seas and is reached from the New Town by crossing the Ponte Girevole from the south and the Ponte di Porta Napoli from the north. Almost rectangular in shape, it is divided into four ''pittaggi'' ( quarters) that are delineated by the cross formed between Via di Mezzo and postiliera Via Nuova. These are Baglio and San Pietro in the upper section which face the Big Sea; and Turipenne and Ponte in the lower part fronting the Little Sea.

The nobility, clergy and military personnel made their homes in Baglio and San Pietro, whilst the artisans and fishermen dwelled in Ponte and Turipenne. An Armenian community was present in the 10th and 11th centuries having arrived in Taranto as troops in the Byzantine Army. The San't Andrea degli Armeni church in Piazza Monteoliveto, located in the Baglio quarter, stands as testimony to the neighbourhood where the Armenians made their homes.

There are a number of 17th and 18th-century palazzi in Old Town. For years, they served as the main residence of local aristocratic families and the clergy. These include Palazzo Calò, Palazzo Carducci-Artenisio (1650), Palazzo Galeota (1728), Palazzo Gallo (17th century), Palazzo Latagliata, Palazzo Lo Jucco (1793) and Palazzo Pantaleo. The 17th century de Beaumont-Bonelli-Bellacicco palace houses the Spartan Museum of Taranto - Hypogeum Bellacicco which extends below street and sea level to the hypogeum that is a crossroads with other hypogeum of Old Town which together form the system of subterranean Taranto.

Churches include the San Cataldo Cathedral (10th century) in Piazza Duomo, San Domenico Maggiore (1302), Sant'Andrea degli Armeni (16th century), San Agostino (1402), San Michele (1763), the Madonna della Salute sanctuary (1752), and San Giuseppe (16th century). Close to the San Agostino church, located near Pendio La Riccia, the buried remains of an ancient Greek temple were discovered.

Beginning in 1934 Benito Mussolini embarked on a project of rejuvenation that involved the demolition of the working class Turipenne pittaggio along the Via Garibaldi and ''Discesa Vasto'' which contained the homes of local fishermen as well as the old Jewish quarter. The demolitions, which also razed the old medieval wall and three churches out of the four within the area, continued until the outbreak of World War II. Modern edifices and apartment blocks were erected to replace the demolished structures.

In addition to the many palazzi, Old Town has myriad arched alleyways, saliti, vicoli and small streets, some of which are closed to traffic. Between 2013 and 2014 two Neapolitan urban artists Cyop and Kaf embarked on a project to decorate derelict buildings, walls and doors in the piazzi and vicoli with 120 representations of street art. It has since become a striking feature of Old Town which is described as the abandoned district of Taranto.

1 Day in Naples, Italy | Travel Guide

This week we are taking you to an incredible, eclectic, tasty, unpredictable city : Naples.

Italy is world renowned for its food, but Naples is just… a State in the State when it comes to its culinary importance.

We’ve been exploring this city more by eating than by sightseeing. Both endeavours have been incredibly rewarding!

There are layers and layers of history and architectural heritage in Napoli : from medieval castles, to royal palaces, churches and even catacombs. Naples is an old lady, older in fact than Rome, since it was founded by the Greeks and later on conquered by Romans.

In this video we tried to convey all the enthusiasm and amazement this trip brought us. We also have made a list of our TOP recommendations in Naples : WHERE to eat, WHAt to eat, WHAT to see and visit. This is just our personal list so… do your research, but most importantly enjoy this city and don’t miss on the opportunity to just get lost in its narrow streets and let the magic happen.

Our TOP THINGS TO SEE IN NAPLES :
Via Toledo and the Quartieri Spagnoli
Galleria Umberto I
Piazza del Plebiscito (Church of San Francesco di Paola and Royal Palace)
Castel Nuovo
Spaccanapoli and Via San Gregorio Armeno (the Christmas Alley)
Castel dell’Ovo

Extra tip : get the best view of the whole city at the Certosa e Museo di San Martino, in the hilltop neighbourhood of Vomero. Vomero is one of the “fancy” areas of the city, completely different from the picturesque Quartieri Spagnoli.

WHERE TO STAY IN NAPLES :
We stayed at a nice airbnb right next to the train station, close to Porta Nolana. It was very convenient for using public transportation and reaching Ercolano, Vesuvio and Pompeii. There was also a direct metro line to reach Vomero neighbourhood.
But if you want to be closer to restaurants and landmarks, you should consider staying in the area between Quartieri Spagnoli, Santa Lucia and Centro Storico neighbourhoods.

WHERE TO EAT IN NAPLES : 1) Scaturchio for breakfast, and it did not disappoint. The babà here was amazing. Also the rustico was incredible. And everything else, really.
2) Pizzeria Brandi for lunch. PIZZA MARGHERITA WAS INVENTED HERE. The pizza was great, and the history-filled atmosphere made the whole experience unforgettable.
3) Any pizza fritta stand, especially on Via Tribunali road. We had ours at 'A Puteca d' 'a Pizza.
4) Antica Trattoria e Pizzeria da Carmine, right next to the train station.

Trekking Outside Matera is AMAZING

Just before I had to leave Matera, there was one more destination to explore.
Join me for a day trip just outside of Matera, Italy to explore the natural beauty of Murgia valley and its awesome caves. It's a hike that the whole family can enjoy as no special gear was required. The caves were beautiful and it's mind-blowing to think people used to live here for thousands of years.

Places to see in ( Matera - Italy ) Sassi di Matera

Places to see in ( Matera - Italy ) Sassi di Matera

The Sassi di Matera are two districts of the Italian city of Matera, Basilicata, well-known for their ancient cave dwellings. The Sassi originate from a prehistoric troglodyte settlement and are suspected to be among the first human settlements in Italy. There is evidence that people were living here as early as the year 7000 BC.

The Sassi are houses dug into the calcarenitic rock itself, which is characteristic of Basilicata and Apulia, locally called tufo although it is not volcanic tuff or tufa. The streets in some parts of the Sassi often run on top of other houses. The ancient town grew up on one slope of the ravine created by a river that is now a small stream. The ravine is known locally as la Gravina.

Until the late 1980s this was considered an area of poverty, since many of these houses were, and in some cases still are, uninhabitable. The current local administration, however, has become more tourism-oriented, and it has promoted the regeneration of the Sassi with the aid of the European Union, the government, UNESCO. Today there are many thriving businesses, pubs, and hotels there, as described in an April 2015 article in The New Yorker .

The Sassi grew in the area of Murgia Plateau, extended between Apulia and Basilicata. Along with the Civita and the Piano, the two Sassi form Matera's Old Town. The Sassi are reminiscent of ancient sites in and around Jerusalem, and for this reason they have been used in many Christian-themed films, including The Gospel According to St. Matthew (Pier Paolo Pasolini, 1964), The Passion of the Christ (Mel Gibson, 2004), The Nativity Story (Catherine Hardwicke, 2006) and Ben-Hur (Timur Bekmambetov, 2016).

Matera (Italian pronunciation: [maˈtɛːra], locally [maˈteːra] (listen); Materano: Matàrë [maˈtæːrə]) is a city in the region of Basilicata, in Southern Italy.

As the capital of the province of Matera, its original settlement lies in two canyons carved by the Gravina River. This area, the Sassi di Matera, is a complex of cave dwellings carved into the ancient river canyon. Over the course of its history, Matera has been occupied by Romans, Longobards, Byzantines, Saracens, Swabians, Angevins, Aragonese, and Bourbons.

By the late 1800s, Matera's cave dwellings became noted for intractable poverty, poor sanitation, meager working conditions, and rampant disease.[citation needed] Evacuated in 1952, the population was relocated to modern housing, and the Sassi (Italian for stones) lay abandoned until the 1980s.[citation needed] Renewed vision and investment led to the cave dwellings becoming a noted historic tourism destination, with hotels, small museums and restaurants – and a vibrant arts community.

Known as la città sotterranea (the underground city), the Sassi and the park of the Rupestrian Churches were named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. In 2019, Matera was declared a European Capital of Culture.

Though scholars continue to debate the date the dwellings were first occupied in Matera, and the continuity of their subsequent occupation, the area of what is now Matera is believed to have been settled since the Palaeolithic (10th millennium BC). This makes it potentially one of the oldest continually inhabited settlements in the world. Alternatively it has been suggested by architectural historian Anne Parmly Toxey that the area has been occupied continuously for at least three millennia.

The town of Matera was founded by the Roman Lucius Caecilius Metellus in 251 BC who called it Matheola. In AD 664 Matera was conquered by the Lombards and became part of the Duchy of Benevento. Architectural historian Anne Parmly Toxey writes that The date of Matera's founding is debated; however, the revered work of the city’s early chroniclers provides numerous, generally accepted accounts of Goth, Longobard, Byzantine, and Saracen sieges of the city beginning in the eighth century and accelerating through the ninth century AD. In the 7th and 8th centuries the nearby grottos were colonised by both Benedictine and Basilian monastic institutions. The 9th and 10th centuries were characterised by the struggle between the Byzantines and the German emperors, including Louis II, who partially destroyed the city. After the settlement of the Normans in Apulia, Matera was ruled by William Iron-Arm from 1043.

After a short communal phase and a series of pestilences and earthquakes, the city became an Aragonese possession in the 15th century, and was given in fief to the barons of the Tramontano family.[citation needed] In 1514, however, the population rebelled against the oppression and killed Count Giovanni Carlo Tramontano. In the 17th century Matera was handed over to the Orsini and then became part of the Terra d'Otranto, in Apulia. Later it was capital of the province of Basilicata, a position it retained until 1806, when Joseph Bonaparte assigned it to Potenza.

In 1927, it became capital of the new province of Matera.

Matera, the City of Sassi, UNESCO World Heritage, European Capital of Culture, provincial capologuogo in Basilicata, one of the oldest cities in the world.
Matera is one of the most interesting tourist destinations in Italy, and has gained international fame thanks to the Sassi, prehistoric caves carved into the rock, perhaps one of the first human settlements in Italy.
Thanks to their similarity with many areas around Jerusalem, the Sassi have been used as a set of several films including The Gospel according to St. Matthew by Pasolini and The Passion of Christ by Gibson.
Matera, European Capital of Culture 2019, is one of the top 10 cities among the 30 destinations selected by Best in Travel 2018, the publication of the Lonely Planet guide that annually indicates the destinations not to be missed, the most discussed and desired by enthusiasts of travel.
