Sudan Travel adventure Day 5: Old Dongola to Karima- Limestone quarry, El Kurru tombs, Jebel Barkal

#sudan #travel #tourism #travelwithrichardandjudy #tourist #olddongola #dongola #nile #nileriver #nubian #guesthouse #karima #travelvlog #jebel #jebelbarkal

We spent a cozy night at the guest house in Old Dongola. In the morning We had a wonderful breakfast again before heading out for Karima. We encounter large amounts of sand drifting onto the road due to the high winds that day. You definitely need four-wheel drive here. We stopped at a limestone quarry that's still in use today, complete with lots of bats and a dead fox. Next stop was the Egyptian and Nubian tombs of El Kurru where our guide is one of the archaeologists who has been excavating the area for years. His insights were truly amazing. The tomb of the Nubian Pharaoh Tanutamani was particularly incredible dating back to 632 BC. Since we are alone in these tombs I couldn't help but be struck by the difference between here and Egypt two weeks ago. The paintings in the tomb of Tanutamani were unbelievable. Unfortunately, the bottom half of the paintings had been ruined by a flood in the past. We stopped for coffee with a few of our guides buddies where we see a drying very poisonous cobra-like snake that they're going to make a pair of shoes out of. Next, we stop at the amazing petrified forest that contained incredible specimen of petrified wood including one large broken up tree trunk that showed the root system at the bottom. It was truly astounding. We eventually arrive at our accommodations for the next two nights, the Nubian Rest House in Karima, Sudan which is run by in Italian hotel company and was absolutely magnificent. During check-in, we are greeted with a lovely snack of delicious Sudanese dates and popcorn with guava juice and pomegranate juice. After a short rest at the guest house, our guide and driver pick us up for our hike up 300 ft. tall mesa Jebel Barkal which has very significant religious significance for the ancient Kush and Egyptian occupiers. After a pretty rigorous climb, we had spectacular commanding views of the Nile River, Karima and the Temple of Amun just below, along with some nearby Meroitic era pyramids. Luckily for us getting down was much easier and took less than a minute as our guide promised. We were able to run down a large sand dune in front of Jebel Barkal which was really fun. We returned to our Nubian rest house where we have a lovely dinner including delicious ice cream which we haven't had at all during our trip so far.

Henna in Karima, Sudan 2014

During one afternoon at the Nubian Guest House in Karima, Sudan our group got some henna decoration. Local tradition dictates that images of animals and people are taboo. The henna is applied in liquid form and allowed to dry. Once dry it is washed and oiled for a lasting artistic stain that can be seen for weeks.
