Melrose House became famous during the Second Boer War (1899 to 1902) because it was used as the headquarters of the British forces. For 18 months, the war effort against the Boers was strategised from 275 Jacob Mare Street. The Peace Treaty of Vereeniging that ended the war was signed around the massive dining table at Melrose House on 31 May 1902.

S1 – Ep 265 – Daniёlskuil – A Little Mining Town in the Green Kalahari!

It was another fantastic gravel road we took to get to Daniёlskuil. So much wildlife to be seen and enjoyed. With the rain the road was a little slippery in some spots, but the Kwid managed just fine. As we drove into this little mining town we were surprised to see that it was not quite as little as we thought! Immediately we saw the old Dutch Reformed Church and the old Police Station which we had to explore. Then it was the rest of the town. Interesting to find out that it is in the Green Kalahari, something I didn’t even know existed. I was seriously amazed at the beautiful houses and how neat the town was. We took a bus ride from Siem Reap to Stung Treng and then a minivan from Stung Treng to Tropeang Kriel - Nong Nok Khiene border and crossed the border into Laos. It was a full day journey and we arrived at the Mekong river only at sunset and found a cheap room to stay at, on Don Det island for under USD 4.

Four buildings have been preserved and restored as museums to the life of Paul Kruger and the earliest farmers in the Transvaal. The oldest building is a cottage built in 1841 by the first owner of Boekenhoutfontein, a single-storey building with a thatched roof and stone patio out front. When Paul Kruger moved here in 1863, he built a new thatched homestead for his family, known as the ‘Pioneer House’. To its right stands the main homestead, a double-storey stone house built in 1872 in typical Eastern- Cape style. It contains many of Kruger’s possessions along with an assortment of period furniture from other homes. The fourth house, built for Kruger’s son Pieter, dates from 1892.
