Sivaganga is a town in the Sivaganga district in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is also the headquarters of the Sivaganga District. The town is located at a distance of 48 km (30 mi) from Madurai and 449 km (279 mi) from the state capital Chennai. It is an important town in this district for official and commercial purpose.
Sivagangai kingdom was founded by Sasivarna Periya Oodaya Thevar in 1730. The town was subsequently ruled by his successors and ultimately by Velu Nachiyar under the stewardship of Maruthu Pandiyar. They were against the British Empire, but ultimately lost to them in 1790. The Company appointed Gowry Vallaba Periya Oodaya Thevar as the Zamindar of Sivaganga in 1801, whose successors continued with chaos until India's independence in 1947. It was under Ramnad district until 1984 and subsequently a part of the newly formed Sivaganga district. The town is known for agriculture, metal working and weaving. The region around Sivaganga has considerable mineral deposits.
Sivaganga is administered by a municipality established in 1965. As of 2011, the municipality covered an area of 7.97 km2 (3.08 sq mi) and had a population of 92.329 Sivagangai comes under the Sivaganga assembly constituency which elects a member to the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly once every five years and it is a part of the Sivaganga constituency which elects its Member of Parliament (MP) once in five years. Roadways are the major mode of transportation to the town and it also has rail connectivity. The nearest seaport, Thoothukudi Port, is located 189 km (117 mi) from Sivaganga, while the nearest airport, Madurai International Airport, is located 53 km (33 mi) from the town.

Kanadukathan is a small town located in the district of Sivaganga and is very close to the town of Karaikudi. The specialty of the place lies in the structure of its houses and the local food. The houses in Kanadukathan are huge and built in the typical Chettinad style. The main doors and entrances of the houses resemble the gateways of the Hindu temples; they are majestic and intricately carved. #KodunkundranatharTemple is dedicated to Hindu God Shiva located at Piranmalai in Sivaganga District of TamilNadu. This Shivastalam, located near Tiruppattur, is a vast hill temple reached by a flight of steps in the Pandya Kingdom. This shrine is regarded as the 5th of the Tevara Stalams in the Pandya region of Tamilnadu. This hill in the form of a Shivalingam is also called Prachandragiri and Katoragiri. This vast temple covering an area of about 30 acres, with three prakarams has 5 beautiful vimanams and an attractive Rajagopuram.
At the ground level is the shrine of Thiru Kodunkundranathar, where Siva is in lingam form, and also houses shrines for Parvati and Murugan. The middle level is of Bhairavar. The top level temple shows Siva as Mangaibaagar, along with Parvati in Kalyana kolam (together as a couple). Piranmalai at 2,500 feet is a unique fortified hill with a temple at 500 feet and a dargah atop its peak. At the bottom there are traces of a moat and a fort wall, apparently pulled down in the early 19th Century.
The temple is praised in the hymns of Saints Tirugnana Sambandar and
Arunagiriar. This is the 5th temple in the Pandya region praised in Thevaram hymns.

The rays of Sun fall on the Lord continuously from the months of Aipasi
to Panguni covering the English months October to April and this is a rare feature of the temple. Lord Shiva is a Swayambumurthi. This is a three tier
temple said to represent Padala Loka, Earth and mountains.

#Keeladi (also as Keeladi) excavation site is a pre-Sangam (Iron age) settlement that is being excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India and the #TamilNadu Archaeology Department.[1] This site is located 12 km southeast of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, near the town of Keezhadi in #Sivagangai_district It comes under the Thiruppuvanam Taluk of Sivagangai district. This is a large-scale excavation carried out in Tamil Nadu after the Adichanallur archaeological site. The settlement lies on the bank of the Vaigai River and it reflects the ancient culture of Tamil people. Epigraphist V. Vedachalam, who served as a domain expert for the excavation, dated the excavated remains between 5th century BCE and 3rd century CE.
