Thattekad Bird Sanctuary | Bhoothathankettu Dam | Best place to visit with family in Kothamangalam
The Thattekkad Bird Sanctuary, covering an area of barely 25 km and located about 12 kmfrom Kothamangalam (Kerala state, India), was the first bird sanctuary in Kerala. Salim Ali, one of the best known ornithologists, described this sanctuary as the richest bird habitat on peninsular India.Thattekkad literally means flat forest, and the region is an evergreen low-land forest located between the branches of the Periyar River, the longest river in Kerala.
Bhoothathankettu is a dam and tourist spot in Ernakulam district in Kerala, India. It is situated outside the village of Pindimana, about 10 km away from the town of Kothamangalam and 50 km away from the main city of Kochi. The original natural dam has been supplemented by a modern dam impounding the Bhoothathankettu Reservoir (Thattekad Reservoir).Large blocks of unshaped stones are placed on both sides of the Periyar River to form the dam, making it look like a natural dam built by superhumans. The name Bhoothathan Kettu, means monster fort; past generations believed it was built by a Bhootham (monster).

Areekal Falls and the nearby Kocharikkal Caves are easily accessible from Ernakulam district. Both the places are in Pampakuda near Muvattupuzha and one of the hidden places to visit in India. A beautiful natural waterfall that cascades down the cliffs like a milky way and an ancient cave hidden in the roots of the giant old trees. These are the Kocharikkal caves.
The non-stop water that falls through the roots of a giant tree flows down like a stream. The crystal clear water and the fish swimming in it will fill anyone's mind. There is a strict instruction not to go into the water here as it is the source of drinking water of an area. A large pond has been built nearby to protect the water coming from the cave. The roots stand like the pillars of a cave. It is said that these caves were used by the ancient soldiers as a stronghold during the war. And the famous Areekal waterfalls is just one and a half kilometres away from Kocharikkal caves in Ernakulam Kerala.

Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is located to the north of the Periyar River (12 km from Kothamangalam Kerala state, India), at the foot of the mighty Western Ghats. The best time to visit the sanctuary is between October and March. As recommended by Dr. Salim Ali(Ornithologist and naturalist), in 1983 an area of 25.16 Sq. Km. at Thattekkad was notified as Kerala’s first Tropical bird sanctuary.
Inchathotty is a village located near Neriamangalam, Thattekad and Kothamangalam in Ernakulam District in Kerala. It is famous for its hanging bridge (suspension bridge) which is considered as the longest suspension bridge in Kerala.

Iringole Kavu is a forest temple dedicated to Goddess Durga, situated in Kunnathunad Taluk of Ernakulam district, 2.5 km from Perumbavoor. This is one of the 108 Durga Temples in Kerala believed to have been consecrated by Lord Parasurama, the sixth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
