Cuckoo Way Walk - Chesterfield Canal Explore - Norwood Tunnel to Shireoaks
Cuckoo Way Walk - Chesterfield Canal Explore - Norwood Tunnel to Shireoaks.
Following on from our previous videos of the 'Missing Section' of the Chesterfield Canal, we pick up at the Eastern portal of the closed Norwood Tunnel (closed 1907).
We head in an easterly direction for around 4 miles to the small ex-mining town of Shireoaks.
We pass through Kiveton Park, where we see the old Dog Kennel Lane Wharf. This was where stone bound the the Palace of Westminster was loaded on to canal boats.
The landscape takes on a rural and peaceful feel as we alternate between thick tree covered avenues, to open countryside. After a few miles, we begin our decent down the ladder of locks. We pass through the hamlet of Turnerwood, which stradles the canal.
The Chesterfield Canal was designed by James Brindley and opened in 1777. It runs for 46 miles from Chesterfield in the west to the River Trent at West Stockwith in the East. It loops through Derbyshire, South Yorkshire and Nottinghamshire; hugging the contour lines as it meanders across the East Midlands. The Cuckoo Way is the name for the footpath that follows the canal (or it's route) for the entire 46 miles.

My channel was set up in 2020 mainly to feature my running adventures. I planned to film and showcase the days out and destinations my running travels took me. Mainly the Peak District and the sights and marvels of Sheffield and the surrounding regions.
However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few.
So the videos you'll find will be mainly be of those things. Of course, where possible I'll be running to my destination.

Train Service From Sheffield To Lincoln Calling At Kiveton Park
Kiveton Park Station 11/7/18
A look at the stations around Doncaster heading out towards Scunthorpe, as well as covering the stations between Lincoln Central and Sheffield via Worksop, annoyingly we went on a day where the pacers weren’t operating so really did defeat the whole object of the visiting these particular stations that’s the ones between Lincoln and Dannal, so another trip is planned to cover these, however we still had lovely weather whilst filming so please enjoy!

WALES: Rotherham Parish #20 of 31
Don't be fooled by the name of this place, you are still firmly in England, although the name of the village which gives this parish it's name is thought to originate from the country of the same name.
You won't find any rolling Welsh valleys or snow capped peaks, nor will you find the locals speaking a language different to English. Trust me, there are no words beginning with LL around here.
What you will find though is our first look at a railway station on this channel, and like London buses, two come along at once! You'll also find a lovely country park - South Yorkshire's biggest no less - in the West of the parish, not to mention the Community Woodland that has sprung up as a result of the local colliery being closed.
There was a ton of other things to see here, so I will let this near 20 minute video do the talking.
You might not find any flags bearing a red dragon around here, but I promise you, you are in WALES.

Chesterfield Canal Giant’s Staircase Shireoaks Nottingham England United Kingdom
Hey everyone, welcome back to my channel. If you are new here, please consider subscribing if you enjoy this video.
Last weekend, we visited the Giant’s Staircase at Chesterfield Canal in Shireoaks near Worksop in Nottingham, England, United Kingdom.
We parked our car somewhere along Shireoaks Row near the Station Road Bridge. Then, we walked from the bridge to the Boundary Lock and other locks up to the Turnerwood Double Bottom Lock before returning. We did not visit the rest of the locks which form parts of the Giant’s Staircase. We met other walkers, cyclists and some anglers along the way. We also spotted some wildlife (mallard ducks, geese, etc.). We had a picnic near one of the locks. We also have the opportunity to watch a narrowboat cruising and navigating some locks on the canal. The views along the canal are stunning with greeneries, woods, farms, some beautiful houses, etc.

SHIREOAKS: Bassetlaw Parish #1 of 66
Ok so today something a little different for you. Not a Rotherham parish, not a Barnsley parish and not a Doncaster parish. This one is TVI's first foray OUT of South Yorkshire and into another county. Welcome to Nottinghamshire people!
The opportunity was too great to not take this one up when I filmed Thorpe Salvin, because literally a mile or so from Netherthorpe Airfield, you can be in the centre of this next parish, our first one in Bassetlaw, and boy is this one a good place to start! Bassetlaw has 66 parishes (NOT 67 as I said previously in a video - I forgot Norton and Cuckney have now merged into one), a right off the bat, what this one has probably won't be matched easily by some of the other 65.
You'll find an old colliery here, with a pit top used in pretty much the same was as Kiveton Park's was, and partially built on the land it once had is a marina. Yes - a MARINA - which is used by narrowboats on the Chesterfield Canal which passes right through the centre of the parish. There's also a train station here, and one of the finest churches I've ever seen.
All that is before you consider the history around Tub Row, the row of 56 terraces that stands opposite the church that didn't have any mains water until 1932, and so had to collect rainwater in their back yards, earning it the nickname. Speaking of names, this parish once had an oak tree planted where the Nottinghamshire boundary met Derbyshire and Yorkshire. The tree is no longer there, but a new one is planned to be planted at some point.
That fact the tree was there though is what led to the name of this place being what it is. This is SHIREOAKS.

My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.
Join me as I try to visit every single parish in the district of Bassetlaw. There are 66. Here's the FIRST one - Shireoaks.
