KIRKUK IRAQ : ANCIENT CITADEL AND MODERN KIRKUK🇮🇶Solo Female Travel Iraq 🇮🇶

#Kirkuk #Iraq #IraqVlog
I was again contacted by one of my subscribers to visit her in Kirkuk , i took along my new French friend Amel, who has been travelling to a few places with me since she arrived.
my Host was an amazing woman, with 2 amazing kids, the oldest is just 10 but her English is amazing!!!
we tried to go to Citadel the first day but it was closed, but made it the next day!
the ruins seemed to go on forever
Some Historians believe the Gutians that built the Citadel(based on an old Cuniform tablet)
While other historians believe it was built during the reign of the Assyrian King Ashur Nasirpal II between 850 and 884 BC
There is the Phrophet Daniel Mosque here and the Al Aryan Mosque which is the one right in the centre.......this is just some brief research i did on UNESCO website but it goes on forever, way to much to write here! i wish i had more time in Kirkuk, but ill be going back soon. SO not what i expected to see in Kirkuk! about # and a half hours by shared taxi from Baghdad

Key Destinations
- Ashur — former capital of the Assyrian Empire and UNESCO World Heritage site, this is one of the country's few great archaeological sites that has benefited from the latest invasion—the Hussein government planned to create a dam nearby that would have flooded and utterly destroyed the site.
- Babylon (بابل) — damaged by inept reconstruction, looting, and military negligence, the ruins of ancient Babylon are still some of the most impressive in the Cradle of Civilization.
- Ctesiphon — the ancient capital of the Parthian and Sassanid Empires left us with magnificent, towering ruins, most notably of the magnificent Arch of Ctesiphon; just across the Tigris is the archaeological site of the ancient Hellenistic city of Seleucia.
- Hatra — a UNESCO World Heritage site, these incredibly well preserved Parthian city off in the desert are quite possibly Iraq's most magnificent ruins
- Nineveh (نينوى) — a 8,000 year old city and one time capital of Assyria, whose partially reconstructed ruins and archaeological site lies across the Tigris from Mosul.
- Ur (أور) — the ruins of the ancient Sumerian city, best known for its giant step pyramid, the Great Ziggurat of Ur.

What Can $10 Get in ERBIL, Iraqi Kurdistan?

How are prices in your city, in your country? Let me know in comments!

Welcome to Erbil, the capital of Iraqi Kurdistan. Erbil is known for its modern, expensive-looking buildings and is considered an expensive city by locals.
What is the reality? Will my 8 month stay here ruin my wallet or no?
Let’s find out what can you do with 10 DOLLARS!

Erbil has 1.5 million inhabitants and is actually one of the oldest cities in the world. The local citadel has a documented history of more than 6,000 years! Near this citadel is the traditional, iconic Grand Bazaar. Where better to buy things than there? Let's head there!
We can either take a taxi, which costs about 4,000 Iraqi dinars, roughly 3 USD. But, I’ll take a bus, which is just 750 dinars, about half a dollar!
So lets catch a bus! The journey took about twenty minutes, and was for 750 Iraqi Dinars.
Speaking of Iraqi Dinars, let’s look at the currency.
The currency look changed After the downfall of Saddam Hussein in 2003, back then his image was featured on the banknotes.
Interesting is also this old banknote with al-Khwarizmi, the inventor of algebra.

Now, on the current banknotes, you can find there places from all over Iraq. And the old notes can still be bought as a souvenir at the bazaar.
The banknotes reach from 250 to 50 000, but I can’t show you the highest one because I am too poor to have it
The currency is influenced by inflation, therefore we need about 14 thousand to have 10 US Dollars.

So, here we are. Grand Bazaar.
Its starting to be very hot in Erbil, the temperatures are reaching up to 50 C in summer! What else to buy than delicious pistachious ice cream ?
It costed just 1 500 Dinars.

Okay, let’s move on. There is one think noone visiting Iraq escapes: tea.
Usually is very cheap, about 250, however for this one I paid one thousand. It’s in the famous cafe in the city center after all.

What I really like about my stay here, is the quality and price for nuts. Pistachious, cashew, these are so expensive in Europe. Here, I paid for a mix of pistachious, peanuts and cashew 5k for half a kilo!

Of course, as a typical tourist, I got lured in to a tourist trap and bought this souvernir with Kurdish flag, with a shape of Kurdistan, for 2k.
On the way, in bazaar, I was invited for some sweets in this amazing sweets shop, Damascus sweets! I managed to get some sweets for free – it’s actually quite frequent, locals are so friendly towards foreigners and trying to make them feel welcomed and help in any situation
Then I also bought some other sweets to the way. Middle Eastern sweets are just legendary!

If my stay in Erbil tought me something – there is never enough food.
On my way back, I stopped for a falafel bread. Just for 1k!

Bread is actually on every corner. I will need some for tomorrow, so I’ll head to my favorite bakery.
It’s just 250 for two pieces!
Tomorrow, I leave to a trip to mountains, so I need to buy a pack of water bottles. Just for 1k!
So, for 10 Dollars, we bought a bus ticket, icecream, tea, half a kilo of nuts, souvenir, sweets, falafel, pack of water bottles and a bread. It’s pretty good, no?

This is Baghdad! An Exploration of the Legendary & Notorious Capital of Iraq (Cultural Travel Guide)

Baghdad, a city that has risen and fallen countless times over the centuries, is enjoying a period of relative peace. I took the opportunity to walk the streets of a city that I had long wanted to explore.

The capital of Iraq has spent much of the last 20 years in turmoil, but there are few more resilient cities in the world. It has rebuilt itself many times over.

There has been a settlement here on the Tigris for nearly 4000 years. The famous fortified round city from the 8th century developed into the richest city in the world. An epicentre of trade and learning. Then came the sieges of the Persians and the Mongols, and the destruction of Tamerlane, not to mention catastrophic floods and plagues. Ottoman rule from the 15th century then gave way to British rule, followed by the regime of Saddam Hussein, followed by the American invasion which led to sectarian civil war. Thankfully Islamic State were held back, but only just. If ever a city deserved a period of peace its Baghdad. But you won’t find much peace on the roads. Don’t think of renting a car here. Red lights have no meaning and there appear to be no rules.

No target was off-limits during the worst years of the civil unrest. The Mutanabi street book market, long a symbol of intellectual freedom, was blown apart by a car bomb in 2007. 30 people were killed. The wreckage of the car is now an exhibit at the Imperial War Museum in London.
Museum.

There were no winners in the tragic Iran - Iraq War but Saddam nonetheless erected a victory arch with replicas of his own hands holding two swords. It stands in the Green zone, a heavy guarded city within a city which houses government buildings, embassies and residences of the Baghdad elite. An enduring symbol of the fragile peace in this city.

A monument that I was keen to see was the Martys Monument. Two Giant tear drops commemorating both those killed in the war with Iran and now also the Kurdish and Shia victims of Saddam Hussein. Access is restricted but you can’t help but be moved by the significance of this vast sculpture.

It’s estimated that 15,000 items were stolen. Many have been lost forever, but the work that has been done to reassemble Iraq’s heritage is remarkable. The museum houses so many treasures from sites such as Babylon, Hatta, Nineveh, and Nimrod that the casual observer would never be able to image what had happened here. It may lack a shop, a cafe and the other facilities of its cousins in Paris, London and New York, but make no mistake, this is a world class museum.

Apart from the museum there is little other evidence of the richness of Baghdad’s past. The city is choked with traffic, and sprawls in all directions with little evidence of investment and development when compared say to Erbil in Kurdistan. The international hotel chains are still absent. But some new developments are being marketed so perhaps the cityscape may be very different in ten years time, if the peace can be maintained, but whatever is coming next Baghdad will endure, as it always has.

Big thanks to Qutaiba Ahmed (qtoursiraq.com).
