Kirby Muxloe Castle

Welcome to the new series of the History Roadshow, today we visit Kirby Muxloe Castle. Kirby Muxloe Castle, is a ruined, fortified manor house in Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire. William, Lord Hastings, began work on the castle in 1480, founding it on the site of a pre-existing manor house.

The castle was rectangular in design, and would have comprised four corner towers, three side towers and a large gatehouse, all protected by a water-filled moat; the centre of the castle would have formed a courtyard. Of these buildings, only the gatehouse and the west tower survive today, partially intact.

William, Lord Hastings, was the chamberlain of the royal household and a favourite of Edward IV. William had acquired extensive estates across the Midlands during the Wars of the Roses, much of it confiscated from his enemies.

In 1474, Edward granted William the right to fortify, four of his manors and to build deer parks around them. Among these was Kirby Muxloe, which the King authorised to be turned into a castle and surrounded by a large park of 2,000 acres

Work began on the castle in October 1480, under the direction of Roger Bowlott, who was Lord Hasting's steward and became the clerk of works for the project. Most of the existing manor house was protected during the work, and probably continued in use while the new castle was built around it.

A picturesque setting awaits, as you stroll around this fortified mansion, once full of power and glory now reduced to a part of English history that serves us a well told story of a man and his goals in life which was left incomplete.

Kirby Muxloe Castle serves as a poignant memorial to his ambition and sudden demise.

Kirby Muxloe Castle (England)

Tour of Kirby Muxloe Castle - 5/7/15

Music is Traditional Medieval Troubadour

Kirby Muxloe Castle, known also as Kirby Castle is an unfinished 15th century fortified manor house in Kirby Muxloe, Leicestershire, England (grid reference SK524046).

It was begun in 1480 by William Hastings, 1st Baron Hastings, during the period of the Wars of the Roses. He already owned a manor house on the site (some of the original manor house foundations are visible as ruins within the enclosure of the castle), for which he planned to totally redevelop. His ambition was to create a fortified residence on a rectangular plan enclosed by walls, towers and a moat. However work stopped at the castle when he was executed in 1483 for treason by Richard III and it was never completed. Parts of the castle were occupied by the remaining Hastings family members, but by the 16th century the site had been left to ruin.

Passport And Visas Requirements To Enter The UK

Please note: Following the recent referendum vote for the UK to leave the European Union (EU), there are currently no changes in the way people travel to Britain. The following guidelines still apply:

If you're planning an adventure to the UK, depending on your nationality and your reason for visiting, you may need to organise a visa.

If you're an American, Canadian or Australian tourist, you'll be able to travel visa-free throughout the UK, providing you have a valid passport and your reason for visiting meets the immigration rules (link is external).

Citizens from some South American and Caribbean countries as well as Japan are also able to travel visa-free around the UK.

European Union citizens, non-EU member states of the EEA (Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland), Switzerland, and members of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT) do not need a visa to enter the UK.

Ashby de la Zouch Castle is a partically ruined fortification in the town of Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire, England.
As with many of the castles, priories and ruins I visited in the Covid summer of 2020, it's the detail that I find most interesting: Cannon ball pot marks, construction techniques and more.

Leicester UK - Amazing History, Buildings ⛪, Shopping 🏬 and Green Spaces 🌻

Welcome to my Leicester video. A city centre full of history, beautiful buildings, green spaces and loads of shopping.
Leicester is situated in the Midlands region of England and is easy to get to through the motorway network with the M1 taking you North or South and the M69 heading towards Coventry and indirectly Birmingham. The city is on a mainline rail route and car parking is ample. I used the Highcross John Lewis car park for easy access to the city centre.
There is so much to do in Leicester, that I would recommend a long weekend break to explore the city and attractions nearby.

Regards,

Andy

Deene Castle ( 1514 ) 2022 - Northamptonshire ( Corby ) I UK I Dron I 4k I DJI - FPV .

Deene Park / Castle, the seat of the Brudenell family since 1514,[1] is a country manor located 5 miles (8 kilometres) northeast of Corby in the county of Northamptonshire, England. The hall itself is a Grade I listed building dating back to the 14th century which has been modified several times since then to create the current structure.[2]

Seven of the Brudenell family were Earls of Cardigan – the most notable being the 7th Earl who led the Charge of the Light Brigade at the Battle of Balaclava (1854). The 7th Earl died childless in 1868, and while the Earldom of Cardigan merged with the Marquessate of Ailesbury, the Deene Park estate passed, after the death in 1915 of his widow, to the descendants of his second cousin Ernest Brudenell-Bruce, 3rd Marquess of Ailesbury.[3]
The estate was inherited by its current owner, Robert Brudenell, in 2014; he is the son of Edmund and Marian Brudenell, who devoted their lives to the rehabilitation of Deene Park and are largely responsible for the estate's present appearance.[4] They are descended from the 3rd Marquess's son Commodore Lord Robert Brudenell-Bruce RN. Lord Robert's son George, Edmund's father, inherited the family seat along with the family's remaining estates in Leicestershire and Northamptonshire,[5] and reverted the family name back to Brudenell by Royal Licence.[6]

History:

7th Earl of Cardigan
The manor of Deene belonged to Westminster Abbey; annual rent of £18 was paid until 1970.[7] The manor house has been expanded around its courtyard from its sixteenth-century core, represented by its great hall, which was given its screen panelling and fireplace in 1571.[8] The early 19th-century Bow Room contains the Brudenell library, collected in the 16th century by Sir Thomas Tresham and his son-in-law, Sir Thomas Brudenell, 1st Earl of Cardigan, though the collection no longer includes the manuscript of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales[9] or the last copy of Magna Carta in private hands.[10]
The house contains furnishings of different periods and portraits, including works by Joshua Reynolds and Thomas Gainsborough. Relics of the Crimean War include the uniforms of Lord Cardigan and the head and tail of his charger, Ronald.
The large gardens designed by David Nightingale Hicks feature a parterre overlooking the lake, and a newly planted avenue.
The manor is located in the countryside not far from the Harringworth Viaduct and is surrounded by historic villages and hamlets. St Peter's Church, Deene, in the grounds, has the funeral monuments of the Brudenells.
Throughout the 1990s, Deene Park hosted the annual August bank holiday Greenbelt Festival.

Wheelchair & Accessible Walks Bradgate Park Leicestershire

This has to be one of our favorite places to visit!
Even though it was raining, we still had a fantastic day out. We hired the Tramper 4X4 Scooter from Bradgate Park Estate for the walk, which really allowed us to explore lots more that we can't usually access. There is a £3 donation to use the tramper, which we think is very reasonable considering the capabilities it has, and how it transformed our walk completely.

The staff are always so lovely, the visitor's center has lots of great information and the guided tours are extremely educational. There is a lovely cafe behind the visitors' center, serving delicious food and drinks daily.

If you have not yet been, I would highly recommend a visit. Even if the Tramper is not available on the day you want to go, you can still have a great walk or ride along the flat tarmac route.

The park is open on certain days for blue badge holders to drive through the park. Please contact the park directly to arrange this.
