Crossing the Congo River in Kindu
There is only one bridge over the Congo river near the port of Matadi in Bas Congo. Crossing the river by dugout canoe is the only way to cross many rivers in this vast country. Here we cross back to Kindu after visiting the Commune of Alunguli facing Kindu on the other side. This is the daily commute for many who live in Alunguli and work in Kindu.

Things to do in Kinshasa DR Congo
Kinshasa is the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Kin (as locals universally call it) sprawls seemingly forever from the banks of the Congo River to its distant shanty towns. Shot through with chaos, music and a lust for life that is as infectious as it is overwhelming, Kinshasa is a city you experience rather than visit. In this video, Kwafrika Travel explains things to do in Kinshasa as per its former customers’ choice.
1°. Kinshasa city tour :
You consider yourself a well-traveled person, until you go to Kinshasa,... It is certainly not a bad thing, however you need to understand the culture here which is very different from any other African country you might have visited, after all there are nearly 15 million people living in Kinshasa and its surroundings. Remember Kinshasa is a place one experience not visit.
Let's start with the language. French is by far the most commonly spoken language - if you can't understand or speak it you will need somebody who does, Kwafrika Travel guides know both English and French. When communicating here, people speak very loudly which can often be very intimidating - most will debate or argue but violence is never an option. Due to the poor economic conditions here, most are simply people who are after a quick buck - start high ($50) and end up settling for $10.
Touring the city, will make you discover Kinshasa's vibrant culture and history. You will explore local landmarks, a bustling market, and the banks of the churning Congo River. The city tour comes fourth in the things to do in Kinshasa.
Traveling with a Kwafrika Travel local guide, you'll learn the stories behind each place you see, from the National Museum to Kabila's Mausoleum and the Place of Independence.
You will also be brought in another incredibly unique aspect of Kinshasa, Sapeurs. La Sape is an abbreviated way to refer to the movement of Sapeurs. The translated meaning of the term La Sape is Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People. Also known as Congolese Dandies, the importance of physical appearance and attire is of the utmost and this is very clear, as you will see. You will experience the city in the safety of a private vehicle that will comfortably accommodate you, with all entrance fees included.
Stop At: Musee National de Kinshasa (National Museum), Kinshasa
Stop At: Academie des Beaux-Arts, Kinshasa
Stop At: Congo River, Kinshasa
Stop At: Symphonie des Arts, Kinshasa
Stop for lunch at Chez Flore known for best local recipes.
2°. Zongo Waterfalls
Located 130 kilometers (90 miles) from Kinshasa, Zongo Park provides a lovely setting & a spectacular scenery to the Zongo Waterfalls. The gorgeous 65m-high Zongo falls are one of DRC’s most spectacular sights. It is the number one of things to do in Kinshasa. Getting to the viewpoints involves some hiking, but watching the water roaring over the precipice into the river below is unforgettable. What makes Zongo waterfalls unique is the water vapor that rises to the sky when the river water hits the ground.
During your experience in Zongo you will be showed where Simon Kimbangu was used to sit after preaching the gospel in neighboring villages (Kamba & Kansangulu). Kimbangu is son of a traditional religious leader who became a Baptist in 1915. According to his disciples, Simon cured the sick, raised the dead back to life, and prophesied the future and, the liberation of black people and many greater miracles.
After experiencing the Zongo waterfalls, if in the sunny season, you may go spend time at a beach located 10 km away from waterfalls. There you will experience a waterfalls massage.
3°. Bonobos sanctuary
Lola ya Bonobo is located 28 km away from the CBD of Kinshasa City. It is the world’s only sanctuary for orphaned bonobos. The Bonobos are our closest living relatives, with more than 99% identical DNA. Bonobos are thus found only in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The sanctuary is surrounded by the rainforest and has a lake inside. Just as you enter the sanctuary, you will be brought to the briefing room. The visit is done in groups, the first group starts at 10 am. The others are done after an interval of 1h30’ up to 4 o’clock when the final group is supposed to end the last visit.
Lola ya Bonobos has rescued 30 bonobos since its inception, the goal of the sanctuary is to rescue, raise, rehabilitate, and if possible, release bonobos orphaned by the illegal wildlife trade.
4°. Parc de la vallée de la N’sele
Parc de la vallée de la N’Sele is a park located in the western part of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the commune of Maluku. It is approximately 90 min from the city center Kinshasa. Not only it does offer conservation but it also provides a space for relaxation and entertainment.

00:00 In South Kivu in Congo, the city of Shabunda is one of the most isolated in the country. Its access is so difficult that life is more expensive there than in any European city. Thus, the poorest families come to look for food there by bicycle or motorbike. These convicts of the road sometimes transport up to 250 kilos of goods for several days, without worrying about the dangers. Without ever giving up, these travelers are almost all considered heroes because he who does not travel does not know the value of men, according to the Congolese.

map of the Democratic Republic of the Congo Africa
The Democratic Republic of the Congo , French: République démocratique du Congo (RDC) [kɔ̃ɡo]), also known as Congo-Kinshasa, DR Congo, the DRC, the DROC, or the Congo, and formerly Zaire, is a country in Central Africa. It is, by area, the second largest country in Africa (after Algeria), and the 11th-largest in the world. With a population of around 92 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is the most populous officially Francophone country in the world. It is a member of the United Nations, Non-Aligned Movement, African Union, and COMESA. Since 2015, the Eastern DR Congo has been the site of an ongoing military conflict in Kivu. The capital and largest city is Kinshasa, which is also the world's most populous Francophone city.
Centered on the Congo Basin, the territory of the DRC was first inhabited by Central African foragers around 90,000 years ago and was reached by the Bantu expansion about 3,000 years ago.[8] In the west, the Kingdom of Kongo ruled around the mouth of the Congo River from the 14th to 19th centuries. In the northeast, center and east, the kingdoms of Azande, Luba and Lunda ruled from the 16th and 17th centuries to the 19th century.
In the 1870s, just before the onset of the Scramble for Africa, European exploration of the Congo Basin was carried out, first led by Henry Morton Stanley under the sponsorship of Leopold II of Belgium. Leopold formally acquired rights to the Congo territory at the Berlin Conference in 1885 and declared the land his private property, naming it the Congo Free State. During the Free State, his colonial military unit, the Force Publique, forced the local population to produce rubber. From 1885 to 1908, millions of Congolese people died as a consequence of disease and exploitation. In 1908, Leopold, despite his initial reluctance, ceded to Belgium the so-called Free State, which thus became known as the Belgian Congo.
Congo achieved independence from Belgium on 30 June 1960 under the name Republic of the Congo. Congolese nationalist Patrice Lumumba was elected the first Prime Minister, while Joseph Kasa-Vubu became the first President. During the Congo Crisis, Joseph-Désiré Mobutu, who later renamed himself Mobutu Sese Seko, officially came into power through a coup d'état and renamed the country Zaire in 1971. The country was run as a dictatorial one-party state, with his Popular Movement of the Revolution as the sole legal party. By the early 1990s, Mobutu's government began to weaken. Destabilisation in the east resulting from the 1994 Rwandan genocide led to a 1996 invasion led by Rwanda, which led to Mobutu's ousting in the First Congo War the following year.[2]
Laurent-Désiré Kabila then became the new president, reverting the country's name to the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Tensions between President Kabila and the Rwandan and Tutsi presence in the country led to the Second Congo War from 1998 to 2003. Ultimately, nine African countries and around twenty armed groups became involved in the war,[9] which resulted in the deaths of 5.4 million people.[10][11][12][13] The two wars devastated the country. Kabila was assassinated by one of his bodyguards on 16 January 2001 and was succeeded eight days later by his son Joseph,[14] under whom human rights in the country remained poor and included frequent abuses such as forced disappearances, torture, arbitrary imprisonment and restrictions on civil liberties according to NGOs.[15] Following the 2018 general election, in the country's first peaceful transition of power since independence, Kabila was succeeded as president by Félix Tshisekedi, who has served as president since.[16]
The Democratic Republic of the Congo is extremely rich in natural resources but has suffered from political instability, a lack of infrastructure, corruption, and centuries of both commercial and colonial extraction and exploitation with little widespread development.[17] Besides the capital Kinshasa, the two next largest cities, Lubumbashi and Mbuji-Mayi, are both mining communities. The DRC's largest export is raw minerals, with China accepting over 50% of its exports in 2019.[2] In 2019, DR Congo's level of human development was ranked 175th out of 189 countries by the Human Development Index.[6] As of 2018, around 600,000 Congolese have fled to neighbouring countries from conflicts in the centre and east of the DRC.[18] Two million children risk starvation, and the fighting has displaced 4.5 million people mapa de Republica Democratica del Congo Africa
How Safe Is Democratic Republic of the Congo for Travel?
Full safety review:
The Democratic Republic of the Congo often referred to as its abbreviation – DRC or D.R. Congo is the single largest and most populous country in Central Africa.
This country has suffered tragic times and has had an extremely tumultuous history.
The presence of armed troupes makes it dangerous for tourists to visit DRC currently.
However, those who manage to enter DRC and are brave enough to spend some time here, are definitely in for an adventure.
Overall DRC isn't a safe destination for travelers. You should know that many governments advise their citizens not to travel to the country as it is considered very high risk. Be very aware of your surroundings at all times. Both petty and violent crimes are normal here.
