S1 – Ep 344 – Kimberley – The Impressive Sentimental Journey which Surprised us!

Our visit to Kimberley began with a late arrival, but we wasted no time and dropped off our bags before heading out for dinner. The Mohawk Spur provided a delightful dining experience with delicious food. We knew that Kimberley had so much to offer, so we carefully selected a few places to explore the following morning. We marveled at the Cecil John Rhodes statue, paid our respects at the war memorials, and were left in awe by the breathtaking Anglican Cathedral, its size truly mind-blowing. A sentimental journey took us to St Patrick's CBC, where my father and uncle had attended school years ago. The impressive institution surprised us with its greatness. Of course, our visit wouldn't have been complete without a trip to the iconic Big Hole, a colossal highlight that left us amazed. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #kimberley

Top 10 Attractions in Western Australia

Top 10 Attractions in Western Australia according to Lonely Planet

10. Gibb River Road
The Gibb River Road is an unsealed track in the Kimberley region of Australia. The road is a shortcut of several hundred kilometers between points linked by the Great Northern Highway, which makes a large detour in the south. Drivers will be rewarded with magnificent scenery of the surrounding wilderness, as well as a sense of isolation and solitude.

9. Bushwalking
Western Australi has 96 National Parks. These special places present oodles of opportunities to go walkabout on the many waymarked trails, and camp in isolated sports.

8. Water Adventures
Diving and snorkelling are excellent in many spots, and Western Australia is the place to swim your favorite marine animal.

7. Broome
Broome is an historical pearling town in the Kimberley region of Western Australia. A well developed tourist destination, it is popular with Australians in the dry season. Broome is on the Indian Ocean and the main beach, Cable Beach, is a beautiful expanse of golden sand. The sunsets on Cable Beach are magnificent and can be enjoyed on the beach or from one of the restaurants on the esplanade.

6. Karijini National Park
The park is most notable for its four prominent gorges marked by waterfalls and water holes. The park's wildlife includes red kangaroos, euros, wallaroos, echidnas, geckos, goannas, bats, legless lizards and a large variety of birds and snakes, including pythons.

5. Perth & Fremantle
Perth is the capital and largest city of Western Australia. Perth spreads out along on a flat coastal plain, dissected by the Swan River and it spreads over the Darling Scarp to the east and the Indian Ocean coastline to the west is the only real physical boundary. Despite its isolation, Perth is a surprisingly culturally diverse city.

4. Pinnacles Desert
The Pinnacles are limestone formations contained within Nambung National Park, near the town of Cervantes, Western Australia. The raw material for the limestone of the Pinnacles came from seashells in an earlier epoch rich in marine life. These shells were broken down into lime rich sands which were blown inland to form high mobile dunes.

3. Shark Bay & Monkey Mia
Shark Bay is a World Heritage Site, in Gascoyne, Western Australia. It is famous for its amazing sites, and for its dolphins. Shark Bay is centred on the towns of Monkey Mia and Debham and is made up of Francois Peron National Park, Dirk Hartog Island, Shell Beach, Shark Bay Marine Park, Hamelin Pool Marine Nature Reserve. It was given World Heritage status in 1991.

2. Margaret River Wine Region
Margaret River is a coastal town south of Perth. It is renown for its wineries, food and surf beaches. It is located in the 'south west' and many features in the region are now tied into the name, Margaret River now is the common term for the region between The Capes - Cape Naturaliste in the north, and Cape Leeuwin in the south

1. Ningaloo Marine Park
Ningaloo Reef is located off the coast of the Gascoyne region of Western Australia. Although it is a beautifully untouched fringing reef, able to be snorkelled from shore at some points, the area is most famous for providing opportunities to snorkel with whale sharks (diving is available on the same trips, but not with the sharks).

KIMBERLEY: Broxtowe Parish #3 of 10

BROXTOWE PARISH #3: KIMBERLEY

Welcome to Kimberley, one of the towns of Broxtowe, located on the Western fringes of the City of Nottingham. Like many of the other towns and villages in the area much of the history of the town is tied up with the mining and lace industries aided and abetted by the coming of the railways. Its history goes back much further than that though.

It was recorded in the Domesday Book as “Chinemarelie”, and the main landholder at that time was William Peverell who owned large swathes of land in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. Over the years Kimberley has expanded to merge almost imperceptibly into neighbouring towns and villages to form a continuous urban landscape from Nottingham to Heanor, encompassing the towns of the Erewash Valley.

Kimberley’s landmarks are plentiful. For a start, look no further than the war memorial, easily the most recognisable structure in the town and a depiction of it used as the logo of the town’s main school. Then there’s a 100 foot high water tower built to supply Nottingham with drinking water from the Derwent Valley. It also has some railway history including two old stations. What really sells this one though would be the buildings of the former Hardy and Hanson’s Brewery. After all its the business which made Kimberley famous.

There’s lots of hills in this one as well. Kimberley definitely ain’t flat! Let’s go!

Hunter River, The Kimberley | Coral Expeditions

Our morning cruise in the Explorers took us from Naturalist Island up the Hunter River past an unusual stone monolith which Navigator John Lort Stokes called ‘the Ninepin’ & into the mangrove-lined Porosus Creek. Towering sandstone escarpment faces formed a scenic valley sheltered from the strong weather systems of the wet season, allowing extensive tidal forests to develop on vast beds of accumulated sediment. This was home to many forms of wildlife, including Saltwater Crocodiles, which use these sheltered waterways as safe nursery zones for the more vulnerable sub-adults until they reach maturity. We were fortunate to observe some of these juveniles basking on the mudbanks or chasing mullet in the drainage gutters while Brahminy Kites & Sacred Kingfishers patrolled the mudflats for breakfast morsels.

Join us for a 10 night Kimberley expedition cruise between Darwin and Broome. View the itinerary here:

The Kimberley, one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth

A land of breathtaking contrasts covering billions of years in history and over one million square kilometres, the Kimberley offers a journey of discovery you will never forget. Affectionately known as the 'pearl of the north', Broome is the Western gateway to the Kimberley and it’s here you can take in a Cable Beach sunset from the saddle of a camel and witness the illusion of the Staircase to the Moon.

The Kimberley is home to some of the world’s most unique attractions, including the world’s only two Horizontal Falls, the Bungle Bungle Range in World-Heritage listed Purnululu National Park, El Questo Wilderness Park, home to natural watering holes Emma Gorge and Zebedee Springs and Lake Argyle - the largest freshwater lake in the Southern Hemisphere. The Kimberley is also one of the best destinations in Australia to have authentic Aboriginal experiences. Visitors can take guided tours and discover ancient rock art, go mud crabbing and spear fishing, and hear Dreamtime stories.

Kununurra, which means big water in the local Aboriginal language, is the gateway to the East Kimberley and is surrounded by extraordinary waterways. The lake and banks of the Ord River are home to an incredibly diverse eco system, including rock wallabies and hundreds of species of migratory and native birds.

Find out more on how to experience this for yourself with our Kununurra and Kimberley Wilderness Itinerary:
