UGANDA 2024 - Self-Guided Travel - FROM KASSESE TO RWENZORI MOUNTAINS
Kasese is a vibrant town located in western Uganda, nestled in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains, often called the Mountains of the Moon. Kasese is a gateway to these majestic mountains and serves as a central hub for travelers heading into the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. The town is also known for its rich culture, local markets, and proximity to Queen Elizabeth National Park, making it a strategic point for tourism in the region.
@mojasaga3945
Kasese is bustling with activity, with local markets offering a variety of Ugandan produce, crafts, and handmade goods that showcase the culture of the Bakonzo people, who primarily inhabit the region. The town also features a mix of restaurants, guesthouses, and facilities to cater to visitors preparing for treks or safaris. The presence of the nearby Kilembe Mines, once one of Uganda’s largest copper producers, also adds historical significance to the area. Today, Kasese is largely focused on tourism and serves as the main entry point for those heading to explore the rugged beauty of the Rwenzori Mountains.
The journey from Kasese to the Rwenzori Mountains is a scenic drive that gradually ascends from the bustling town into lush, mountainous terrain. Here’s what to expect along the way:
Distance and Accessibility: The road from Kasese to the Rwenzori National Park's main trailheads is approximately 10-20 kilometers, depending on the chosen entry point. Most visitors travel to Kilembe or Nyakalengija, the two main starting points for Rwenzori treks. The roads are generally accessible year-round, but travelers should be prepared for occasional rough patches, especially during the rainy season when the paths can become muddy.
Scenic Landscapes: As you leave Kasese, the landscape quickly transforms, with views of terraced hillsides, banana plantations, and verdant valleys. The ascent offers breathtaking views of the plains below, and on clear days, you can see Lake George and Queen Elizabeth National Park in the distance. The air becomes cooler as you approach the foothills, providing a refreshing contrast to the warmer climate in the town.
Local Villages and Culture: Along the route, you’ll pass through small villages where the Bakonzo people live. These communities are closely tied to the mountains and have a rich cultural heritage. Visitors may encounter locals wearing traditional clothing or spot children waving as they pass by. The Bakonzo people view the Rwenzori Mountains as sacred, and their customs and folklore are intertwined with the peaks. It’s common to see local farmers tending to hillside plots, growing crops like coffee, bananas, and millet.
Wildlife and Flora: The drive introduces travelers to the biodiversity of the region, with dense vegetation, forested areas, and a variety of bird species. As you approach the national park boundaries, the ecosystem shifts to montane forest, filled with unique plant life such as giant lobelias and tree ferns. The area is home to diverse bird species, some endemic to the Rwenzoris, making the journey appealing to birdwatchers.

Kasese is one of the most beautiful and gifted places to visit in Uganda, basing on the number of features that exist. These include the Kyibira Kyahumba hot springs, Kiwa herritage hot springs, River Nyamwamba, River Mubuku, Queen Elizabeth National Park, Mountain Rwenzori, Kilembe mines. All the named places have a lot that one can learn from, as a snippet; did you know, entering the hot spring water heals many diseases but mostly bones and that is why many people with born/spine issues travel to enter the hot springs.

Uganda Gorilla Trekking in Bwindi National Park - Country #80 to Visit All Countries
In this video, I share my travel experience in Uganda which is my country #80 in my quest to visit all 193 UN-recognized countries around the world. During my time in Uganda, I got a chance to do gorilla trekking in Bwindi National Park. Seeing the gorillas deep in the forest was a surreal experience. We also got a chance to eat Ugandan food such as Rolex and this experience was definitely underrated.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park in Kasese.
The Rwenzori Mountains National Park provides stunning views of glacier and snow-capped mountains just kilometres from the equator, where it is contiguous with the Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Having the third highest mountain in Africa at 5,109 m (after Kilimanjaro and Mount Kenya), the Park includes a much larger alpine area than either, covering an area of 99,600 ha of which 70% lies at over 2,500 m in height. The Rwenzori Mountains are the highest and most permanent sources of the River Nile, and constitute a vital water catchment. Their multitude of fast flowing rivers, magnificent waterfalls and stratified vegetation make the property exceptionally scenic and beautiful. The mountains are well-known for their unique alpine flora which includes many species endemic to the Albertine Rift in the higher altitude zones including giant heathers, groundsels and lobelias. The Park also supplies local communities with various wild resources and is an important cultural heritage.

The climb - Ruwenzori trekking 5-days Kilembe Route to Weismann’s Peak 4620m - AMAZING NATURE!!!
Uganda, mountains of the moon: #Ruwenzori Trekking Services operates the #Kilembe Route with reasonable prices, good organization and well experienced staff. Starting point Kyanjuki/Kilembe 1450m, Sine Camp 2596m (1st night), Mutinda Camp 3688m (2nd night), Bugata Camp 4062m (3rd night), summit climb from 7 to 11am to #Weismann’s Peak 4620m, Kiharo Camp 3430metres (4th night) and back to Kilembe Trekkers Hostel.
Gumboots are required for most of the time to cover muddy sections and will be provided. Believe it or not, they had much better grip on all kind of ground and did not cause any blister. Only that I would take my own gumboots with steel caps next time to avoid toes getting hurt.
Ruwenzori Mountains in the border region Uganda and Kongo with 5109m (Margherita Peak) the third highest and snow covered mountains in Africa. It consists of six massifs with three peaks above 5000m and close to 20 peaks above 4000m.
Annual rainfall is about 2500mm. You have a good chance to experience rain also during dry season. But hiking in this environment is definitely worth it with amazing nature and views. Pass various vegetation zones (tropical rain forest, bamboo zone, heather zone, alpine zone, rock and ice zone) with the so-called heather zone the most outstanding to me.

Uganda copper mine Kilembe منجم النحاس 銅礦 медная шахта
Kilembe Mines is a copper and cobalt mine in Uganda, the third-largest economy in the East African Community. The mine is located in Kilembe, a suburb of the town of Kasese, in the foothills of the Rwenzori Mountains in the Western Region of Uganda The mine is approximately 380 kilometres (236 mi), by road, west of Kampala, the country's capital and largest city. The coordinates of Kilembe Mines are:0°12'30.0N, 30°00'25.0E (Latitude:0.208333; Longitude:30.006944). Kilembe Mines is Uganda's largest copper mine, with estimated deposits of copper in excess of 4,000,000 tonnes and an undetermined amount of cobalt ore. In addition, there approximately 2,800 acres (1,100 ha), of unexplored acreage at the site.In July 1950, two Canadian mining companies, Frosbisher Limited and Ventures Limited, formed a joint venture, named Kilembe Mines Limited (KML), whose objective was to mine copper from under the Rwenzori Mountains near Kasese. KML built and operated a copper smelter in Jinja and maintained offices in Kampala, the country's capital. Other assets include a housing estate for staff in Kasese and the 5MW Mubuku I Power Station in the Rwenzori Mountains.
In 1962, KML was acquired by Falconbridge of Africa, who sold it to the Government of Uganda in 1975. Copper extraction ceased in 1982 due to dilapidated equipment, high inflation and insecurity.
In 2013, after nearly 30 years of dormancy and after several failed attempts to privatize the mine, a consortium led by Tibet-Hima Mining Company Limited, won the competitive bid to manage, rehabilitate and operate Kilembe Mines Limited for 25 years from 2013 until 2038. In exchange for those rights, the consortium paid a cash down payment of US$4.3 million and is expected to make an annual payment of US$1 million until the end of the concession. Also, the consortium will invest US$135 million into rehabilitating and improving the mine and will increase the capacity of Mubuku I Power Station to 12MW. In addition to the cash payments above, the Ugandan government will receive royalties on the minerals extracted as well as taxes from Kilembe Mines Limited business operations.
Uganda | Crater lakes in Fort Portal
The Crater lakes in the surroundings of Fort Portal are breathtakingly beautiful to behold, and offer one of the best hiking places in the area. The hikes lead you through several crater lakes, villages, tea plantations and waterfalls. To match the beauty of the crater lakes, one can sometimes also see the tallest African Mountain range, the Rwenzori Mountains of the Moon in the distance on a clear sunny day.
For me on the 3rd day of my Roadtrip through Uganda started with an early morning hike to a Hill top that affords you a beautiful view of three crater lakes in the area and their surroundings. Much of the hike is relaxed until the steep climb to the hill top which left me sweating.
If you are planning a visit to Uganda definitely a reason to add Fort Portal to your Itinerary

ARRIVAL: 15 th Oct, 2023
DEPARTURE: 29 th Oct, 2023
Rwenzori mountain; a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1994, is the most alluring hiking destination in Uganda traversed by two discrete 6-9-day trail circuits. This trek starts at Kilembe in the south passing through fascinating succession of altitudinal defined vegetation zones. Normal Rwenzori hikes stick below the snow line which reduces risk of altitude related sickness. However, glacial peaks can be better accessed by experienced technical climbers. Your trek experience is combined with the tree climbing lions, gorilla tracking experience as well as the Ankole cultural encounter.
