Tajikistan - Khujand and Fann Mountains

Visit to Tajikistan, a post-Soviet country in Central Asia; Khojent - an ancient city on the Silk Road; journey through the picturesque Fann Mountains; mountain lake Iskanderkul and nearby waterfall.

Tajikistan gained independence in 1991, after the collapse of the USSR.
Until 1997, there was a civil war for power between government forces and the Islamic opposition. The conflict claimed an estimated 50,000 lives. President Emomali Rahmon has ruled the country continuously since 1992.
About 10 million people live in Tajikistan. The vast majority of the inhabitants (about 97% of the population) profess Islam.
Khujand is the second largest city in Tajikistan. It is one of the oldest cities in Central Asia.
Panjshanbe Bazaar is the largest in the country. Its name means Thursday.
Mountains cover 93% of Tadjikistan. More than half of the country lies at an altitude above 3000 m above sea level.
Iskanderkul is a picturesque lake in the Fann Mountains. According to a legend, Alexander the Great stopped by this lake, and so the lake was named in his honor (his Persian name was Iskander).

Khujand, Tajikistan: Alexandria the Furthest - a Silk Road Outpost on the Edge of the Fergana Valley

Khujand was a critical stage in Alexander the Great's conquest of the Scythians, located on the furthest edge of Central Asia. After winning a decisive battle, Alexander founded the city of Alexandria Eschate, which translates to Alexandria the Furthest. Rumors of further expansion were put to rest when scouts reported that the region beyond the river was just desert hills. Alexander turned his sights to India, and Khujand began a storied history as a Silk Road outpost, changing hands between the Greeks, Sogdians, and Turks.

This rich historical tapestry is still visible today, despite centuries of destruction and turmoil, including the devastation of the Mongol Empire and the Soviet invasion. As Khujand rose and fell through the ages, it was always a key player in the struggles and triumphs of the region, and remains a cultural and geographic entity connected to the surrounding Fergana Valley.

The city's current state, however, is one of isolation. Both from its former neighbours (Kokand, Samarkand, and Bukhara), due to the sudden emergence of the national borders, and from the capital city (Dushanbe) on the other side of a large mountain chain.
Nonetheless, the spirit and legacy of Khujand remains a vibrant presence in the region, and its remarkable history is a testament to the tenacity and resilience of the human spirit.

Khujand - second largest city in Tajikistan with bustling markets

#khujand #tajikistan #travel

In August 2022, during my tour in central Asia, I visited the second largest city in Tajikistan, the old city of Khujand, located in the northern part of the country. The drive from Dushanbe to Khujand was tiring. I took the marshrutka, and the journey lasted for about 6 hours or so. The heat was unbearable at that time of year.

The Silk Road City of Khujand: A Historical and Cultural Journey

Introduction

Khujand is the second largest city in Tajikistan, located in the north of the country. It is a historic city with a rich culture and heritage. Khujand is also a popular tourist destination, thanks to its many historical and cultural attractions.

History

Khujand has been inhabited for over 2,500 years. It was founded by the Sogdians, an ancient Iranian people. Khujand was an important city on the Silk Road, and it was once the capital of the Samanid Empire. The city was destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century, but it was rebuilt and has continued to thrive ever since.

Attractions

Khujand is home to many historical and cultural attractions, including:

The Khujand Fortress: This 10th-century fortress is one of the most impressive fortifications in Tajikistan.
The Khujand Museum: This museum houses a collection of artifacts from Khujand's rich history.
The Khujand Bazaar: This bustling bazaar is a great place to experience the local culture and buy souvenirs.
The Khujand Art Gallery: This gallery exhibits works by Tajik artists.
The Khujand Park: This park is a popular spot for locals and tourists alike.
The Khujand River: This river flows through the city and is a popular spot for swimming and fishing.
Things to do

In addition to visiting the city's many historical and cultural attractions, there are many other things to do in Khujand, including:

Take a cooking class and learn how to make traditional Tajik dishes.
Go hiking in the surrounding mountains.
Visit the nearby Panjshanbe Bazaar, one of the largest markets in Central Asia.
Go horseback riding through the countryside.
Visit a local homestay and experience Tajik culture firsthand.
When to go

The best time to visit Khujand is during the spring (April-May) or fall (September-October). The weather is mild during these months, and there are fewer tourists.

Getting there

Khujand is located about 200 kilometers from Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan. The best way to get to Khujand is by plane or by bus. There is also a train that runs from Dushanbe to Khujand, but it is not as frequent as the bus or plane.

Visas

Citizens of most countries need a visa to enter Tajikistan. You can apply for a visa at the Tajik embassy or consulate in your home country.

Budget

The cost of traveling to Khujand will vary depending on your budget. However, you can expect to spend around $50-100 per day on accommodation, food, and transportation.

Conclusion

Khujand is a fascinating city with a rich history and culture. It is a great place to visit if you are interested in learning more about Tajikistan and Central Asia.
