Kharg Island
Kharg Island is a continental island in the Persian Gulf belonging to Iran. The island is located 25 km (16 mi) off the coast of Iran. Administered by the adjacent coastal Bushehr Province, Kharg Island provides a sea port for the export of oil and extends Iranian territorial sea claims into the Persian Gulf oil fields.Kharg, the only city in the Kharg District.An Iranian oil tanker has burst into flames and sunk, eight days after a collision with a cargo ship off the coast of China. A Tehran official said before news of the sinking that there was no hope of saving the 30 missing crewmen. Chinese officials have played down fears of a major environmental disaster.
