Kenilworth is a borough in Union County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 8,427, an increase of 513 (+6.5%) from the 2010 census count of 7,914, which in turn reflected an increase of 239 (+3.1%) from the 7,675 counted in the 2000 census.
Kenilworth was incorporated as a borough by an act of the New Jersey Legislature on May 13, 1907, from portions of Cranford and Union Township, based on the results of a referendum held on June 18, 1907.
In the late 1890s, the New Orange Industrial Association purchased land in Cranford and Union that was subdivided into building lots. The firm brought in several large industries and lured Upsala College from Brooklyn with an offer of cash and free land for its campus.
Because New Orange was often confused with one of The Oranges in Essex County, the name Kenilworth was chosen when the borough was incorporated in 1907. The name Kenilworth came from a literary society (The Kenilworth Club) which the businessmen belonged to. The Kenilworth Club was named in honor of the novel Kenilworth written in 1821 by Sir Walter Scott. The novel refers to England's Kenilworth Castle located in Kenilworth, England.

Kenilworth is a lovely country town nestled between the Mary River and the rolling hills of the Blackall and Conondale Ranges, 160 kilometres from Brisbane. It is a foodies and nature lovers' paradise with amazing donuts, fantastic cheeses and wonderful nature walks.

On our visit to Kenilworth, we wandered around the town centre and tried the donuts at the Kenilworth Country Bakery. We also visited the Kenilworth Dairies and meandered along the Fig Tree Walk at Little Yabba Creek. We explored the local markets and saw a Designer Dunny!
Kenilworth Country Bakery
The heritage-listed Kenilworth Country Bakery was established in 1924 and is the oldest building in Kenilworth.
The bakery is famous for its fantastic variety of donuts and the 1kg donut challenge. Inside the bakery, you will see hundreds of silver plates on the walls displaying the names of those who have completed the challenge. You can even get special donuts for your dog. We enjoyed our coffee and donuts in the outside alleyway, which is decorated with colourful pop-art murals.
Kenilworth Dairies
The Kenilworth Dairies are open seven days a week and have a Cellar Door, Dairy Alley and Poppa’s Cafe.
The Cellar Door is stocked with a fantastic selection of relishes, jams, sauces and wine from the local area. In the Dairy Alley, you will find a huge selection of soft and hard cheeses, yoghurts and their amazing mousses. At Poppa’s Cafe, you can enjoy an iced or hot coffee, morning tea, lunch or one of their handmade ice creams.
Fig Tree Walk
Little Yabba Creek Park in the Imbil State Forest is 6.5 kilometres from Kenilworth, and this is where we started the Fig Tree Walk.
This easy 1.1-kilometre circuit is along an easy flat track and boardwalk through the riverine rainforest. Be aware there are Giant Stinging Trees with stinging hairs growing on the leaves and the branches, and when stung, the pain can last for days or even months.
The highlight of the walk is the magnificent 150-year-old Moreton Bay fig trees and the peace and tranquillity. There are also information boards about the forest and wildlife along the way.
While at Yabba Creek Park, we read some of the work of local poets on display as part of the Sunshine Coast Hinterland to Headland Poetry Trail.
Designer Dunny
We went for a quick look to see the ‘Designer Dunny’ at Isaac Moore Park. This public artwork and toilet block cost $580,000 to install and was designed by Maleny industrial artist Michael Lennie to resemble an unfinished indigenous fishing basket.
Kenilworth Market
The Kenilworth Market is held every Saturday from 8 am to 1.30 pm in the Kenilworth Town Park. It has a great selection of fresh produce, homemade arts and crafts, food, and music.

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens | Guide to Washington DC’s National Park | Lotus & Water Lily Festival
Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens is Washington, DC’s only National Park and it’s a hidden gem in the city. Located in historic northeast DC, along the Anacostia River, Kenilworth is the place to go for lotus flowers and water lilies.
Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens has such a rich history in the region and it wasn’t always a National Park or even associated with the National Park Service. The gardens started as a hobby and eventual commercial garden by a Civil War veteran. Eventually, the land and gardens were turned over to the US Government and by 1938 the National Park welcomed Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens into their portfolio.
The Gardens holds the distinction of being the only National Park dedicated to the propagation and display of exotic aquatic plants. DC is full of history, amazing sites and museums, but we think Kenilworth is pretty special so make sure it’s own your list next time you are in the Washington DC region!
While the Park is open year-round, the best time of year is for their annual Lotus and Water Lily Festival, a weeklong celebration of the flowers and the cultures most associated with them. Each day of the festival has a different theme, which highlights the uniqueness of these blooms, with accompanying Park Ranger boardwalk talks and other activities.
We visited the Park for the Asian Culture day and were fortunate to see a variety of amazing traditional dances, like the beautiful Lotus Dance, and of course, walk among the flowers!

Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens National Park, Washington DC is a video introducing the historical lotus and lily garden of the National Capital Parks East park. This video tour of Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens highlights the history of the park including the historic greenhouses and archival photos of Walter B. Shaw and Helen Shaw Fowler, the original founders of the national park, as well as the Victoria Water Lily, the Sacred Asian Lotus, the tropical water lily, the nation's capital's only remaining freshwater tidal wetland, and the venue of the annual Lotus & Water Lily Festival. The national park video also features family activities at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens such as the photography contest, birdwatching and wildlife viewing, drawing and sketching, cycling, and walking the boardwalk to the Anacostia River. ABOUT ROBERT PEAK DESIGN
Robert Peak established his career in 1987 with graphic design in Washington, D.C. He was on the forefront of the budding desktop publishing movement and both catered to a substantial list of design clients and served as expert consultant to government agencies and private firms for effectively using design software. In 1993, he undertook a 4-year round-the-world travel and photography expedition with his wife, Jennifer Carpenter-Peak, and subsequently relocated to Berkeley Springs, West Virginia. The studio doors were reopened in 1996, and the firm expanded the services in 2002 with commercial photography, in 2007 with film production, and in 2013 with aerial photography/cinematography.
