Visit Keelung, Taiwan // A Great Day Trip from Taipei

Keelung is a great day trip from Taipei. It's a port city in Northern Taiwan, where you'll see a mix of fishing ships, cruise ships and cargo ships.

More detailed information about a visit to Keelung can be found here:

A direct train from Taipei Station to Keelung will take about 45 minutes, and cost $1.30.

Keelung’s well-known night market is small, but thriving! Known for its bright yellow lanterns, the market opens in the afternoon, rather than the evening, and is home to dozens of street food vendors and restaurants.

From this area, take a taxi to the Zhengbin Port “Color Houses.” It’s a newly-developed touristy spot in Keelung. The buildings are painted in bright colors, and have become popular with tourists, who line up across the water for photos of the buildings reflecting in the water. They also house different restaurants on their bottom floors, which are enjoyable for a quick meal or drink on the dock.

You’ll pass Keelung's historic shipyard. The skeleton is still in tact, as a nod to Keelung’s history as a fishing port.

The wet market in Keelung is very much alive. Between the two bridges, you’ll find it full full of people buying and selling live fish, sharks, clams, urchins, and anything else the boats have brought in.
If you buy something from their tanks, you can take it to a restaurant next door, where they’ll prepare in for you on the spot.

From Keelung, it’s an easy taxi or Uber ride to another port nearby,, Chen'ao.
You can hike along the interesting rock formations on the coast,.and check out the famous Elephant Trunk Rock.
A day trip to Keelung is another great option on a visit to Taipei, Taiwan.

A city full of ancient forts and colourful photo spots, Keelung is a charming port city in the northeastern part of Taiwan.

02:00 - Zhengbin Fishing Port 正濱漁港

Keelung: Taiwan's Underrated City

Keelung has a reputation of being a rundown, wet, dirty city that's falling apart. I'm not so sure about that.

music: Steve Monite - Things Falling Apart

Keelung, Taipei 台湾基隆 🇹🇼 Taipei To Keelung, Miaokou Night Market 基隆廟口夜市 , Taiwan Travel Vlog 2023

Keelung, Taipei 台湾基隆 is a port city in Northern Taipei and we take a day trip to explore its unique setting, surrounded by both mountains and a harbor. We hopped on a train from New Taipei to Keelung to enjoy the freshest seafood at the local fish market and marvel at the street food at Keelung Night Market, one of the most famous Taiwanese Street Food Markets in Taiwan.

We also take in the spectacular ocean views and rock formations on the northern coast of Heping Island Park — as well as take a spontaneous dip in its breathtaking ocean pool! Plus, we visit one of Taiwan’s most Instagrammable tourist attractions: the colorful, European-style seaside houses at a colonial Japanese fishing port.

S19EP13 | TAIWAN | A Day in KEELUNG CITY

We're in Keelung City (Taiwan) for a few days and explore some of the surrounding parks and sights. Close to the Keelung port, we climb up to the Martyrs' Shrine and the nearby Zhupu Altar. In the nearby Zhongzheng Park, we climb to the top of a goddess statue and ring a HUGE bell. The Ershawan Fort grounds provide great views over Keelung harbour and we have a look at the remains of the structures and canons. From there we make our way to Heping Island and after seeing the busloads of people queuing at the entrance decided to rather enjoy the views from the harbour wall.
We enjoyed Keelung a lot and the following video will show a bit more of the well-known Night Market.

Travel in Taiwan (2015, 7/8)

Wangyou Valley
The sun is blazing as we arrive at a trail in eastern Keelung that will take us down a hill into Wangyou Valley – a rare sight in what is known as Taiwan’s rainy city. Slowly we descend the steps. Coastal plants cover the edges of the trail, their leaves thick and waxy to retain moisture in the salty sea air. Purple-headed thistles spring up among other wildflowers. White trumpet-nosed blooms cling to the steep cliffs. Bulbuls, white-eyes, babblers, and thrushes duck and weave among the dense thickets. Serpent eagles and goshawks soar above a coast that has been ravaged year after year, century after century by typhoons, monsoon rains, and crashing waves.
Peppered, too, amongst the hills are remnants of Keelung’s military past: pillbox guard posts and fortified lookouts peep from the undergrowth, fighting a losing battle against Mother Nature. After climbing to the top of one of the valley’s several peaks, we see the small fishing harbor of Badouzi on the left beyond, while ahead of us stretches the wide expanse of the East China Sea.

Heping Island
To the northwest of Wangyou Valley lies Heping Island. In 1626, the Spanish arrived on this island, declared it Spanish territory, and built a fortification – Fort San Salvador – on the southwestern side. The fort and any traces of the Spanish on Heping Island have, unfortunately, been largely lost to history, but a small snapshot of the island’s colonial years can be seen in the geo park on its northern side. Much like at nearby Yeliu (with its famous Queen’s Head Rock), the main attractions in the park are the divertingly shaped sandstone rocks along the sea’s edge.
Follow the path around the park and you’ll come across the Cave of Foreign Words, a 20-meter-long natural tunnel that pierces a small headland near the eastern edge of the park. Inside the cave there is, purportedly, some 17th-century graffiti left by the Dutch, who took over Fort San Salvador in the 1640s.

Baimiweng Fort
One of several old fortifications perched upon the hilltops around Keelung, Baimiweng commands a spectacular view of both the harbor and the sea. The small, winding lane that leads to the fort is a bit difficult to find, even for Keelungers, says Wang, who, with a painter’s romantic eye, goes on to compare the challenging ascent up the narrow, twisting road to the journey up to the citadel of Évora Monte in Portugal. Reaching the fortifications, you’re confronted with a spectacular vista and four large semi-circular gun emplacements, each of which was capable in its time of hosting a 5.65-meter-long cannon able to fire a steel shell 8.8 kilometers at enemy battleships. Though the current fortifications date back only to the early 1900s, Wang writes that fortifications have been built on this location since the 17th-century colonial conflicts between the Spanish and the Dutch, a fact attested by the fort’s alternate name, Holland Castle. “From here the night view of the harbor is breathtaking,” Wang writes, “and on the other side, far out to sea, you can see freighters slowly entering the harbor, while further away still you can see the sun setting.”

Central Keelung & Harbor
As a busy, working container port, central Keelung is a churning organism of cranes and freight containers, trundling cargo ships and busy-bee tugboats. The narrow streets and alleys that creep out from the narrow central harbor can become, especially on weekends, breathtakingly crowded – a situation abetted by the fact that the nearby Miaokou Night Market is one of the most famous in Taiwan.

Day Trip from Taipei to Keelung by Train Part 1 - Taiwan

Taiwan is a very tourist friendly country. There is so much to see and do. I jump on a train from Taiwan to see the port city of Keelung. The train is very inexpensive and easy to ride.

Keelung, officially known as Keelung City, is a major port city situated in the northeastern part of Taiwan. The city is a part of the Taipei–Keelung metropolitan area, along with its neighbors, New Taipei City and Taipei, respectively. Nicknamed the Rainy Port for its frequent rain and maritime role, the city is Taiwan's second largest seaport (after Kaohsiung). The city was founded by the Spanish Empire in 1626, then called La Santisima Trinidad.

In Keelung I explore the area around the harbor all the way to the colorful houses to the north. During my stay in Taiwan this was the highlight of my trip and I can’t wait to return.

Enjoy the video!
