Top Sri Lankan Travel Destinations | Don't Miss Sella Kataragama!
The history of Sella Kataragama goes back to pre Christian era and both Buddhist and Hindu literature have identified this place in various ways. According to chronicles some of the people who accompanied Vijaya from India in 543 BC established a village called Kajara-Gama which is thought to be current Kataragama. Sella Kataragama is a small town lying on the banks of Menik Ganga about 4 kilometers north -west of Kataragama which has been weaved in to the legends of deity Kataragama ( Skanda Kumaraya) as much as Kataragama itself. According to Hindu beliefs god Skanda is also known as Murugan, Arumugam, Kandasami (Skanda Swami), Subrahmanya, etc. Many legends describes the birth of this deity and according to Hindu legends God Skanda came to Sri Lanka after a row with his wife Thevani and landed in the southern part of the island. He made Wedihiti Kanda near Kataragama his adobe. One day he saw a beautiful 16 year old local girl called Valli who was adapted by the veddha chieftain of the tribe who lived in the area.
Skanda unable to win her love consulted his brother god Ganesh to help him. Finding out that Valli feared elephants, a plan was devised for Ganesh to appear as a Elephant and Skanda to come to her rescue. Before turning in to the elephant, Ganesh gave a pot of water to Skanda and asked him to pore the water on to him after the planed attack so he would turn back to the Human form. When Skanda approached Valli in form of a old man at Sella Kataragama, she was chocking on some food and in the eagerness to help her, he dropped all the water. At the same time Ganesh appears in form of a elephant and scares her. Skanda offered her to help with the condition of marring him. Valli having no choice consents to marry him and then he appear in his true form. But unfortunate Ganesh, has to stay with a elephant head since Skanda has dropped the water. And later it is believed that the newly wedded couple lived at Sella Kataragama.
Present Sella Kataragama
Sella Kataragama area has been developed as an another multi cultural area attracting all walks of life from Buddhists, Hindus and the indigenous Veddas. To enter the sacred area you need to cross the Menik Ganga ( river ). The walk from the car park to the river is lined with shops selling sweetmeats to toys to memorabilia. On the other side of the river lies a plethora of kovils and devales including a Ganapathi Kovil, a Siva Kovil, a Kataragama Kovil, a Valliamma Kovil, a Lakshmi Kovil and Saman Devalaya and a temple dedicated to king Mahasen called Mahasen Viharaya. Those on pilgrimage to Kataragama, a vist to Sella Kataragama is generally a permanent item in the itinerary. Newly married couples make it a point to visit the devales of Valli Amma to obtain blessings for the new life.

Kataragama:
Kataragama is a pilgrimage place situated in Uva province, Sri Lanka.
The pre-Christian era is where Kataragama's history began, and both Buddhist and Hindu literature have mentioned this location in various ways.
Popular mythology has it that Elara, the Indian invader who conquered the city of Anuradhapura at the time, dispatched the spy Kadira to the southern region of Rohana to spy on the Sinhalese Monarchs. He settled at Kataragama and brought Thevani, his Indian bride, with him. Afterwards, he fell in love with Valli, a stunning 16-year-old local, and got married to her with the former wife's approval. Kadira, a brilliant spy, rose to prominence in Kataragama after King Dutugamunu ultimately overcame the Elara.
He offered special assistance to the Sinhalese who welcomed him as a benefactor. Because of how well regarded he was, the Sinhalese people made him a deity after his passing and constructed a shrine (devale) in his honor. Before becoming Kataragama Deviyo, Kadira was referred to as the Kadira Deviyo. Yet, the Tamil population of Kataragama never acknowledged him as a god and shunned him.
According to reports, Kadira ran six spy rings that were further divided into 12 units. These were the groups that later evolved into the Kataragama Deviyo's six heads and twelve arms.
It is said that the current Kataragama Devale was constructed by King Dutuganumu after he vanquished the Tamil invader Elara.
Katragama One of the key occasions on the Kataragama Calendar is the Esala Maha Perahera. The Esala Full Moon Poya Day, which falls between July and August, is when this ritualistic possession takes place. Both the manner in which it is held and the possession itself make this Perahera special.
Kiri wehera:
According to the Buddhists, Kiri Wehera is one of the 16 places visited by Buddha (solos maha stana) during his 3 visits to Sri Lanka.
'Kiri wehera' name came from 'Kihiri wehera' because this wehera had built in Kihiri forest in past.

Andare's grave:
Andare was a witty court jester during the reigns of Kings Kirthi Sri Rajasinhe and Rajadhi Rajasinhe of the Kandyan Kingdom. The tale of Andare is among Sri Lanka's most well-known folktales.
He is thought to have been born in the Matara district's Devinuwara. He was the second child of Palawinnage Palliyaguru, a renowned linguist and Dutch-appointed teacher at the Church of Devinuwara.
Folklore has it that Andare passed away from thirst in Udamalala village while visiting his hometown. According to legend, after learning of the passing of his beloved court jester, the king went straight to the scene of the crime. Upon seeing the body with all its limbs spread out, the king reportedly smiled and said, Dear Andare, you are making me laugh even after your death.
Where Andare is thought to have died has a memorial, a tomb, and a sculpture depicting his death with his arms outstretched.
Hewker siddeley HS 748 series aircraft (AVRO) in Weerawila air force :
The AVRO HS 748 is a medium size trubo prop passenger aircraft designed by British Aviation From AVRO. The first AVRO HS 748 was manufactured in 1960 & the AVRO HS748 series 2 - A aircraft on display was introduced to Sri Lanka Air Force in 1979.
This Aircraft bearing Sri Lanka Air Force Registration No CR - 833 has flown 10,870 Hours ond 20 minutes of total flying hours & was last flown 15th October 1998 the AVRO fleet was Decommissioned from service in 2003 after two and a help decades of service to the nation .
The AVRO HS 748 aircroft is still being used in many countries for both civil and military Purposes such as India , United States of America & Canada .

This beautiful resorts Located by the roadside on the way to the city of Katharagama. this hotel is based on a nice concept. consists of a restaurant at the front and about 9 cabanas at the back. Cabanas are painted in a natural-looking beige color mingling with nature quite well. The cabanas are built without disturbing the foliage. There's a nice swimming pool located between the cabanas. The rearmost cabanas (numbers 7 and 8) are the closest to nature. A few steps behind is the jungle where 🐦, 🦋 and 🙊 are in abundance. Those who are keen on animal photography would be surprised to realize that from your backyard you can take pictures of many animals. You can comfortably sit on the reclining chairs placed on the porch of the cabana and engage in some photography. You can even step into the jungle via the footpaths. Or you can just relax on the porch.
The room's interior is well laid out and is very cosy . All furniture is made of solid real wood according to an antique theme. The bathroom is quite well-designed and equipped, too. You can request bed tea/coffee. Breakfast at the restaurant is limited to Sri Lankan and Western set menu without much variety. If your stay is three days or less you can be happy with the available breakfast. If you want variety with your meals you have to make a trip to Thissamaharama which is about 12 km - a 10-15 min drive, where many food choices are available. Katharagama, though only a couple of kilometers away, does not still have many choices as far as restaurants are concerned. Perhaps, things will impress in the future. About 4-5 vehicles can be parked in the car park at the front of the property. The staff is very helpful, friendly and accommodating. There's a nice swimming pool located between the cabanas.
If you want to spend your vacations in a relaxed place this is the best place I would recommend.
