Visit to the Three Chiefs Monument (Gaborone, Botswana)
Think of this as the Botswanan Washington Monument. Sorta.
In brief, the Three Chiefs here did some Art of the Deal, if you will, getting their position together to make the best deal they could with the Crown and get Bechuanaland (or what we call Botswana today) defined as a single British protectorate, and NOT a smattering of smaller helpless fully-owned British colonies.
They couldn't fight off the British, but what they could do was be proactive, get out ahead of the colonialization process, if you will, and stop the machine at protectorate rather than let it slide all the way to full colony by default.
See, next door Rhodesia had just become full Crown property, under Cecil Rhodes' (impressively effective) empire-building ambition and leadership. (And good for him I guess.)
Also, the Dutch-derived Afrikaner Boer people were well into their Great Trek north-and-eastward after being pushed out of the Cape Colony, and some were making their way up into Bechuanaland. And the Chiefs knew from South Africa's example how THAT was going to go.
So they swallowed their pride, got their act together, gathered up a posse and went to see the Queen.
And since they had done this, it was then possible for there to even BE an independent country called Botswana just a few decades later.
The most salient point to notice is that these guys even wanted to do this in the first place. The pattern elsewhere had always been African chiefs trying to use the British (or French or Germans or Italians or whoever) as weapons against OTHER chiefs and tribes. That is, they would trade their lands out as full colonies in exchange for Big Chief Number One Status UNDER said inevitable colonial authority.
Now who knows. Maybe there were actually a forth or fifth chief who got screwed over in the process by these three. Beats me. But still, they did a whole lot better than most, and Botswana is in much better and more autonomous shape today as a result.

Botswana -
A country well known for having some of the best wilderness and wildlife areas on the African continent. Imagine experiencing the stunning beauty of the world’s largest intact inland Delta – the Okavango; the unimaginable vastness of the world’s second largest game reserve – the Central Kalahari Game Reserve; the isolation and other-worldliness of the Makgadikgadi – uninhabited pans the size of Portugal; and the astoundingly prolific wildlife of the Chobe National Park.
And we got to do 3 out of the 4 during our recent trip, PLUS a day trip to Victoria Falls. Prepare yourself for spectacular scenes from Chobe National Park and the Chobe River, Vic Falls, Makgadikgadi Pans, AND the Okavago Delta by air and on a traditional Mokoro ride.
I can truly say that this trip over 8 days exceeded all of our expectations!
