If you’re into learning about world religions, you’ll hit the jackpot in Thailand.
In this video we present you with 10 of the most stunning temples in all of Thailand.
Thailand is filled with magnificent Buddhist temples, some dating back centuries, others much, much younger.
There are temples in Thailand made out of wood, stone and even recycled beer bottles, but their grandeur is something to behold.
1. Sanctuary of Truth.
The Sanctuary of Truth in Pattaya gives new meaning to the word “impressive.”
Intricate carvings cover every inch of the wood structure, which is filled with traditional Buddhist and Hindu decorations.
It is a newer temple, a work in progress, as it began in 1981 and is scheduled to be completed in 2050.
2. Wat Phra That Lampang Luang.
Wat Phra That Lampang Luang is one of the most sacred temples in Thailand, home to a strand of Buddha’s hair.
It also is considered one of the best examples of Lanna architecture.
3. Temple of a Million Bottles.
The Temple of a Million Bottles (Wat Pa Maha Chedi Kaew) isn’t your usual Buddhist temple, indeed, it is one of the more unique temples you’ll find in Thailand.
The complex incorporates about 1.5 million recycled glass bottles in its design. Mainly green Heineken and brown Chang bottles are used
and bottle caps are used to create mosaics.
4. Temple of the Emerald Buddha.
The Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) may be misnamed, because the only thing in common with Buddha and emerald is, the colour green.
The 66-centimeters (26-inch) high Buddha is made of jasper or jade.
Still, it occupies a place of honour in this temple on the Grand Palace grounds.
The Buddha, which is clad in gold, is believed to date back to the 15th century.
5. Wat Mahathat, Sukhothai.
Wat Mahathat, located in northern Thailand’s Sukhothai Historical Park, is an ancient temple that is considered the park’s most important and impressive temple.
There are 168 sculptures of Buddhist disciples with hands clasped which decorate the base of the main stupa, which was built to contain the relics which belonged to Buddha.
6. Wat Arun.
Wat Arun is known as the Temple of Dawn, but it might just as easily be known as the Temple of Magnificence.
This temple, which overlooks the Chao Phraya River in Bangkok, is nothing short of spectacular when it’s lit up against the night sky.
7. Wat Chaiwatthanaram.
Wat Chaiwatthanaram is an awesome temple complex in Ayutthaya, which is known as the ancient capital of Thailand.
It was built to honour the king’s mother and this temple is the most visited site in Ayutthaya.
Wat Chaiwatthanaram is situated on the banks of the Chao Phraya River, but even though the scenic river is beautiful, it is no match for this temple.
8. Wat Phra That Doi Suthep.
Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is one of the must-sees when you’re visiting Chiang Mai.
It's one of the most sacred temples in Northern Thailand. The temple’s name is often refered to as Doi Suthep, although, this is actually the name of the mountain it’s located on.
The temple, about 15 km (10 miles) from Chiang Mai, and is still a working Buddhist monastery that was built in the 14th century.
The top of the temple is decorated with a golden spire, surrounded by shrines.
9. Temple of the Reclining Buddha.
Bangkok’s Temple of the Reclining Buddha is home the largest collection of Buddhas in Thailand, including a reclining Buddha that is 45 meters (150 feet) long.
It's built on an island next to The Grand Palace, and this temple complex is considered to be the best of the royal temples.
Wat Pho is one of Bangkok’s oldest temples and is considered the birthplace of Thai massage.
An early centre for public education, walls are decorated with inscriptions on various subjects.
10. White Temple.
The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun) is a gorgeous gingerbread creation that is one of the newest temples in Thailand, being built in 1997.
Reminiscent of a fairy tale castle covered with snow, you could imagine this being home to a ferocious ogre.
A highlight of this privately-owned temple is the bridge of the cycle of rebirth, under which outstretched hands reach for the sky.
Across the bridge is the Gate of Heaven where two creatures decide the fate of the dead.
So, there you have it, 10 of the most amazing temples in Thailand.
If you are visiting Thailand, make sure you check them out.

Preah Vihear is a Khmer temple situated atop a 525 meter (1,722 ft) cliff in the Dângrêk Mountains, on the border between Cambodia and Thailand. It has the most spectacular setting of all the Khmer temples. Most of the temple was constructed in the 11th and 12th century during the reigns of the Khmer kings Suryavarman I and Suryavarman II.
9. Sihanoukville
Sihanoukville, also known as Kampong Som, is a port city and beach resort on the Gulf of Thailand. The big attraction here are the white-sand beaches and several undeveloped tropical islands. Sihanoukville is a good place to relax and unwind, though be prepared to battle the crows during the high season or a holiday weekend.
8. Tonle Sap
Tonlé Sap is the largest freshwater lake in South East Asia and is of major importance to Cambodia. The lake expands and shrinks dramatically with the seasons. From November to May, Cambodia’s dry season, the Tonlé Sap drains into the Mekong River at Phnom Penh.
7. Silver Pagoda

Most notable is a small 17th century baccarat crystal Buddha (the Emerald Buddha of Cambodia) and a life-sized gold Maitreya Buddha decorated with 9584 diamonds.
6. Bokor Hill Station
Bokor Hill Station near Kampot was built by the French in the 1920s to be used as a retreat from the heat of Phnom Penh. It has since been abandoned twice, first in the 1940s when the Japanese invaded Cambodia and again in the 1970s, when the Khmer Rouge engulfed the country.
5. Kratie
Kratie is a small town located on the banks of the Mekong River and is dominated by a central marketplace surrounded by old, French colonial buildings. There’s no large scale tourism, but plenty of backpackers pour through here during the peak season.

The site is dominated by Prasat Thom, a 30 meter (98 ft) tall temple pyramid rising high above the surrounding jungle.
3. Banteay Srei
Although officially part of the Angkor complex, Banteay Srei lies 25 km (15 miles) north-east of the main group of temples, and therefore often considered a separate Cambodia attraction. 2. Bayon Temple
Part of the world famous destination of Angkor, the Bayon temple features a sea of over 200 massive stone faces looking in all direction. The curious smiling faces, thought by many to be a portrait of king Jayavarman VII himself or a combination of him and Buddha, are an instantly recognizable image of Angkor.

Kratie is a small town located on the banks of the Mekong River and is dominated by a central marketplace surrounded by old, French colonial buildings. There’s no large scale tourism, but plenty of backpackers pour through here during the peak season. It is the place in Cambodia to see the rare Irrawaddy dolphins, which live in the Mekong River in ever-diminishing numbers. It is estimated that there are between 66 and 86 dolphins left in the upper Cambodian Mekong area.
4. Koh Ker
Koh Ker was the capital of the Khmer empire for a very brief period from the year 928 to 944 AD. In this short time some very spectacular buildings and immense sculptures were constructed. The site is dominated by Prasat Thom, a 30 meter (98 ft) tall temple pyramid rising high above the surrounding jungle. A giant Garuda (mythical half-man, half-bird creature), carved into the stone blocks, still guard the very top, although its partially covered now. Left to the jungle for nearly a millennium, Koh Ker was one of Cambodia’s most remote and inaccessible temple destinations. This has now changed thanks to recent de-mining and the opening of a new toll road.
3. Banteay Srei
Although officially part of the Angkor complex, Banteay Srei lies 25 km (15 miles) north-east of the main group of temples, and therefore often considered a separate Cambodia attraction. The temple was completed in 967 AD and is built largely of red sandstone, a medium that lends itself to the elaborate decorative wall carvings which are still clearly visible today. Banteay Srei is the only major temple at Angkor not built for a king, instead it was constructed by one of king Rajendravarman’s counselors, Yajnyavahara.
Built in the 12th century by King Jayavarman VII as part of a massive expansion of his capital Angkor Thom, the Bayon is built at the exact center of the royal city.
1. Angkor Wat
Angkor Wat (meaning “City Temple”) is the most magnificent and largest of all Angkor temples and the top tourist attraction in Cambodia. Built around the first half of 12th century by King Suryavarman II, the temple’s balance, composition and beauty make it one of the finest monuments in the world. A huge rectangular reservoir surrounds Angkor Wat which rises up through a series of three rectangular terraces to the central shrine and tower at a height of 213 meters (669 feet). This arrangement reflects the traditional Khmer idea of the temple mountain, in which the temple represent Mount Meru, the home of the gods in Hinduism.
Things to see and do in Siem Reap & Angkor in Cambodia? Tomb Raider, Preah Vihear 8K 4K VR180
What to see and do in Siem Reap and UNESCO Angkor Archeologically Park in 4 full days? Angkor Wat, Tomb Raider, Preah Vihear, KohKer, Floating Village, Mine Fields etc
Please enjoy my 180 degree viewing angle videos in 2D where you can look around by moving your phone/tablet or dragging your mouse as well as in 3D if you have VR gear. All my videos will also be uploaded to DeoVR.com if you want to enjoy them in higher quality.
In the coming month I will be showing you all the places I visited in much greater detail but for now this is what is coming soon.
I arrived in Siem Reap the night before the much loved Water Festival in early November 2022. I was lucky enough to have arranged a TukTuk driver before I arrived and ironically his name was Mr Lucky. I had already bought my tickets to the Unesco listed Angkor Archaeological Park online and this would save me a lot of time.
For the next 4 full days I set out to explore as much of the Siem Reap area as I could. I would visit the cliché Angkor Wat as well as the Tomb Raider Temple called Ta Prohm as well as a dozen other temples in the park.
An 11 hour daytrip by car also arranged by my TukTuk driver would take me to the Thai border to the other Enesco site Cambodia has called Preah Vihear. Until 2011 Thailand and Cambodia had been fighting over the area where several troops were even killed.
On the way back i’d visit KohKer which requires a separate ticket as we all the Angkor pass. I would also see Kouk Temple which is just reachable by TukTuk if needed.
Incredibly Cambodia is still covered in minefields with people each year losing their lives. The Temple areas are safe but make sure you stay in the designated areas. As an example only 14ha of 200ha in the KohKer temple site and only 40 of the 157ha of Preah Videar have been cleared of mines.
On the last full day I would see the floating village on Tonle Sap Lake as well as couple of extra Temples in the area.
At night the main part of town for the 3 day public holiday festival erupted into parties. The boat races were cancelled due to covid concerns but this didn’t stop people having a great time. For a country where a third of the population had been murdered until as recent as 25 years ago during the Khmer Rouge Pol Pot times I have to say the Cambodian people are one of the friendliest and nicest people I have ever had the pleasure to visit.
Thanks for watching
