The United States Top Secret Mission in Ust’-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan 🇰🇿
When the Soviet Union collapsed, Kazakhstan government became the number one largest nuclear superpower overnight. Project Sapphire was a successful 1994 covert operation of the United States government in cooperation with the Kazakhstan government to reduce the threat of nuclear proliferation by removing nuclear material from Kazakhstan as part of the Cooperative Threat Reduction Program, which was authorized by the Soviet Nuclear Threat Reduction Act of 1991.
A warehouse at the Ulba Metallurgical Plant outside Ust-Kamenogorsk housed over 1,000 pounds of weapons grade enriched uranium to fuel nuclear submarines. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, also wanted to remove post-Soviet nuclear materials because Kazakhstan lacked the facilities and technical capacity to sustain nuclear weapons. the fuel was poorly documented and secured, and in danger of being sold for use in the construction of nuclear weapons.
This mission stands as a successful attempt of a country secretly moving 1,000 pounds of nuclear weapons through the Irtysh River and City of Ust-Kamenogorsk, unnoticed to another country to protect them from the dangers of nuclear weapons left behind by the Soviet Union. Join me as I show you the city that is still famous for it’s rich resources and hidden covert past.

Astana. Capital of Kazakhstan is a Super Modern City
Astana went from a small town to a large metropolis and the capital of Kazakhstan. The city is super modern and has lots to offer.

Visit Ust-Kamenogorsk with Air Astana
Ust-Kamenogorsk stands at the confluence of the two rivers Irtysh and Ulba, like a gate to the emerald land of Kazakhstan. There are many natural attractions here: Katon-Karagai National Park, Lake Zaisan and many others. No wonder these regions are called Altai Switzerland.
Embark on an adventure with Air Astana!
East Kazakhstan is unique for its landscapes
Everything is here: from mountain peaks to golden steppe surfaces, from coniferous forests to sandy deserts, from freshwater lakes to thermal springs. It is more convenient to get to these local attractions through Ust-Kamenogorsk where we fly almost daily from Almaty and Nur-Sultan.

Kazakhstan is the richest country in Central Asia, due to its large oil and natural gas reserves. The country is also the largest landlocked country. The country inherited the culture of the ancient Silk Road, Nomadic lifestyle and the Soviet Union which had a great influence on its formation. This mixture makes Kazakhstan so different from any other country in the region and in the world.
Cities
Aktobe — an industrial city located in the eastern part of Europe.
Almaty — largest city, and capital prior to December 1998. Definitely a must-see. Beside the Soviet-style city, you may want to go to the Medeu and other places in the nearby mountains.
Atyrau — oil capital of Kazakhstan, where large onshore Tengiz and offshore Kashagan oilfields are located.
Karaganda — industrial city between Astana and Almaty; worth visiting if you like mining history.
Nursultan (Astana, Aqmola) — second largest city, and capital since December 1998. Worth visiting but you only need a few days to get to the most recommended sightseeings. The city is brand new and being built very rapidly. If you want to see what Aqmola / Astana (Nursultan's previous names) looks like, you need to do it now as the old city is disappearing quite rapidly.
Pavlodar — Kazakh city in very north of the country, founded in 1720, closed until 1992 for its military significance in tank production, and home to one very impressive mosque, as well as other interesting Orthodox churches and various memorials
Shymkent — Kazakhstan's third largest city, very crowded with Uzbek people, it is an old market town located near Tashkent and some beautiful mountains; now booming with oil exploration,
Turkestan — another ancient city, long a border town between the Persian culture to the south and the Turkic nomadic culture to the north, now majority Uzbek and home to several important cultural-historical monuments
Ust-Kamenogorsk — Majority Russian mining city in the Altai mountains

River Irtysh in Kazakhstan
River Irtysh starts from Altai mountains in the boarder areas of Mongolia and China, enters Kazakhstan, flows northwest, meet River Ob in Russia, flows further north all across the Siberia and enters to the Arctic ocean in the north pole. It's the 7th longest River (4248 km) of the world and completely frozen these days as the temperature fluctuates in between -10 & -50 from December to April.

Finding Mt Belukha, Siberia-Kazakhstan, Episode 76
While doing a stop-go trip across Russia on the Trans-Siberian Express I got wind of a very large mountain in southern Siberia on the border of Kazakhstan. My original intent was to summit Mt Belukha, at 4509m, but let me just say that my ass was kicked before I even got to the mountain. Need I say more?

You Will Never Find This Anywhere Else in Kazakhstan 🇰🇿
When the Soviet Union Empire was around. They exalted majority of their Communists party leaders as statues. You were able to find Hammer & Sickles, Pre WWI - II War monuments, propaganda murals, Stalin and Vladimir Lenin statues, throughout the Soviet Empire. Due to the empire collapse the people took to the streets and did what every free expressing human has done. They knocked down statues of former leaders. To this day you can still find hammer & Sickle monuments and Eternal Flames memorials. You will rarely find Stalin and Lenin statues in the former soviet satellite countries. I heard a rumor from the local people in Kazakhstan that you can find multiple Lenin statues located in the industrial district city of Ust'-Kamenogorsk, Kazakhstan( Өскемен). Join me …
