It's been a wild several days in Turkmenistan. In my opinion, this is (by a long shot) the world's most bizarre country.
In this video, I explain the 10 strangest things that I find about Turkmen culture -- from the thousands of white-marble buildings to the shockingly empty streets, a massive fire crater in the desert that hasn't stopped burning for 50 years, and the heavy censorship of the internet.
Turkmenistan is essentially the North Korea of Central Asia. Both the capital cities of Pyongyang and Ashgabat feel eerily similar when walking around. The only major difference is that the people of North Korea are oppressed, whereas the people of Turkmenistan seem to be warm, friendly, and hospitable.

Spending $20 at a Turkmenistan Market
Ashgabat Turkmenistan is a strange place. I have never seen so much gold and marble in my life, but the streets seemed empty. In this Turkmenistan travel vlog, I join my friend Lexie Alford and make a trip to a local Turkmen market called the Russian Bazaar. Here, we tried street food, interacted with the locals, and witnessed some real culture.
I say real culture, because Turkmenistan is known as the North Korea of Central Asia. The president Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow has a tight grip on the country, and it's very hard to get off the normal tourist path.
Beside our hotel was a local market, we asked our guide if we could visit, and he said if we really wanted to we could, but not to bring a camera because of police. The locals had been so nice to us, so thought we would take a small chance.
One more thing to note. After I posted the first Turkmenistan travel vlog in Ashgabat, I had said that we had our US dollars exchanged to Turkmen Manat at 1 to 13. Locals commented that it's actually suppose to be 1 to 20. It's funny though, from an atm it's 1 to 3.5.
Very happy we got our money on the black market.

Oriental bazaar Altyn Asyr also known locally as Täze jygyldyk New tolkuchka is the largest market in Turkmenistan, and the fifth-largest in Central Asia. It is located in the outskirts of Ashgabat, in the residential area Choganly. It was built to resemble the shape a Turkmen carpet ornament of Ahal Province. The market covers 154 hectares. At the heart of the bazaar is a tall clock tower, its main landmark. There are 2,155 shops in the market.It was built to replace the demolished Tolkuchka bazaar, and is an extensive market sprawled across the desert suburbs of Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, a few kilometres from the city centre. It is the largest open air market in Central Asia. It is noted in particular for its sale of large red Turkmen rugs. The market thrives especially on Sundays and sells a massive range of goods, including Turkmen carpets, handicrafts, silks, jewelry, jeans, laundry soap, plastic bags, and bales of rice. It also has a notable camel market.
The oriental Bazaar Altyn Asyr was opened in 2011 with the participation of the President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.
The new market features unique architecture. The complex resembles a carpet pattern from a bird's eye view. The bazaar includes a hotel that can accommodate a hundred guests, and there are several cafes and bistros on the grounds.
In 2013 the market was equipped with telephone equipment and high-speed Internet.[

Ertugrul Gazi Mosque, (Azadi Mosque ) Ashgabat
The Ertugrul Gazi Mosque is one of the most beautiful Muslim mosques of Turkmenistan. Like any other buildings, erected in Ashgabat during the period of independence, the mosque strikes with its size and rich decoration.
The ceremonial opening of the mosque took place in 1998. It is decorated with four snow-white minarets, and is similar in appearance to the well-known Blue Mosque, located in Istanbul.
The exterior and interior design of the Azadi Mosque is made in old-time Islamic and Byzantine style and strikes with its greatness and refinement. Inside the mosque there is a large courtyard with a fountain, and its prayer hall abounds with paintings, gilding and stained glasses.
The mosque was erected in the heart of Ashgabat, in Azadi street in the 90-s of the XX century. That is why this building is also called the Azadi Mosque.
The Azadi Mosque is the largest one in Ashgabat and can accommodate up to 5,000 people at the same time. It was built in Turkish style and named in honor of oguzkhan Ertogrul – Osman I, the father of Osman Empire first ruler.
