Unakoti means one less a koti in bengali, hosts an ancient Shiva place of worship with huge rock reliefs. It is the prime tourist place of Unakoti district, Tripura in the kailashahar subdivision in the northeastern Indian state of Tripura.
Unakoti lies 178 km to the northeast from agartala which has the closest airport, 8 km to the east of kailashahar. The nearest railway station is 19.6 km away at Dharmanagar railway station on the Lumding - Sabroom section. From Dharmanagar it takes 40 mins by car. Travelling from capital Agartala is easy by boarding morning train which reaches before 9am & you can return on the same day by 8pm via last train to agartala.

What do the legends say?
Unakoti is a Shaiva pilgrimage site (dedicated to the worship of Lord Shiva as the supreme being) and it dates back to 7th-9th centuries. Legend has it that one day, while on his way to Kashi, Lord Shiva along with an entourage of ten million gods and goddesses, decided to take a break and spend the night at Unakoti. He instructed all the gods and goddesses to be up and ready before dawn to re-embark on their journey. When everybody failed to wake up before dawn, Lord Shiva cursed them to turn into stone – thus, there are one less than ten million rock-cut images here.
But wait, that’s not the only legend which has been making the rounds over centuries! Another one states that there was a local sculptor named Kallu Kumar – a devotee of goddess Parvati. When he expressed his desire to follow Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati to Kailash, Shiva tasked him to create stone-cut images of ten million gods and goddesses before sunrise. Some say, he was unable to do so and was one short of ten million before the sun rose, while other versions of the legend state that he started sculpting his own image to become immortal, and was unable to complete the task.

Located 178 kms from Agartala in the Kailashahar subdivision of North Tripura, Unakoti Hill has a 30 feet Shiva figure carved out of a single vertical rock face. It also has other rock-cut and stone images of Vishnu, Nandi, Narasimha, Ravana, Hanuman and several unidentified deities.

Agartala to Unakoti is about 178 km (Google says 160km)
It will take about 5 hours to reach by road.
Road condition is average.
You can hire private vehicle from Agartala in about INR 4000 for one day.
You can also go by Bus till Dharmanagar and then by private vehicle like auto or sumo.
The nearest railway station is at Kumarghat (20km).
Kumarghat has trains coming from both Agartala (Tripura) and Lumding (Assam).
Lumding is connected to trains from New Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and other parts of Assam, Nagaland.

Lord Shiv asked his group to wake up before sunrise and continue their journey. But only Shiv woke up, as scheduled, and the rest were still in their deep slumber. In anger, Shiv cursed his group to become stone images.
