A Drive through Izmit, Kocaeli-Turkey Travel Guide
Izmit is a large city located in the eastern side of Istanbul and is one of the industrial hubs of Turkey. It takes only about an hour to get there from Istanbul and two cities seem to be glued together as many factories and settlements are located in between. Izmit is a the center of Kocaeli province and home to over a million people. I drew through the city of Izmit to Kartepe mountain and filmed the journey all together. Drive with me and see it yourself!

Kartepe, then known as Köseköy, was founded in 1600s. After the Population exchange between Greece and Turkey agreement, Turks from Greece were settled in Köseköy in 1920s. Later people from Black Sea coast were also settled around Köseköy. Being a part of industrial area the population increased and in 1970 it was declared a seat of township. In 2008 it was merged to nearby towns, renamed as Kartepe and became a district center of Kocaeli Province. The municipality of Kartepe is now an intracity municipality of Greater Kocaeli.

The Eastern Express, My First Leg; Gebze to Ankara 🇹🇷
The Eastern Express, known also as The Winter Express, or in Turçe (Turkish) as Dogu Ekspresi, is the longest train journey in the country, the train connects Ankara with its eastern city of Kars, near the birder of Turkey and Armenia, in the old days Kars was Armenia. The distance is 1300 kms. or 808 mi.
The long route is about 25 hours, but it took me 30.
The train stops everywhere, therefore :. Do not trust the name; “express”
It is definitely an epic journey. I had three days off, and I did it, to return to Istanbul by plane, I flew back.
The stops listed on the route are; Kirikkale, Kayseri, Sivas, Erzincan and Erzurun, but as was my experience, the train stopped everywhere! Everywhere! 🤣
As a traveler myself, I love, with passion, train journeys! I’ve done the Mauritania Iron Ore Train, the most uncomfortable, of course, it is a cargo train. Traveled all over West and East Europe by train, I’ve done the Trans Siberian, the one that jumps all over in Myanmar, traveled by train in Vietnam, in India, Mexico, etc etc. so, it is just natural that I would do this one.
An epic train journey! Loved it.
This was my first leg; Gebze to Ankara, which it’s NOT part of the Eastern Express.
Another thing, tickets for the journey are always sold out. I got lucky and got me a seat fir the 13 February, ignoring I was going to get in trouble with my wife; due to my happiness, I forgot the next day was the 14, which is…. Yes, Valentine’s!
On the 14, somewhere in between Ankara and Kars, I realized it, and called her; that’s why you’ve been moody, I asked (🤣) … yup! I was in trouble!

The Turkish State Railways started building high-speed rail lines in 2003. The first section of the line, between Ankara and Eskişehir, was inaugurated on March 13, 2009. It is a part of the 533 km Istanbul to Ankara high-speed rail line.
The construction of three separate high-speed lines from Ankara to Istanbul, Konya and Sivas, as well as taking an Ankara--Izmir line to the launch stage, form part of the Turkish Ministry of Transport's strategic aims and targets Turkey plans to construct a network of high-speed lines in the early part of the 21st century, targeting a 1500 km network of high-speed lines by 2013 and a 10000 km network by the year 2023.Prior to the introduction of the high-speed line, the population centres of Istanbul (12 million) and Ankara (5 million) were connected by a 576 km long railway line, of which only 110 km was double tracked. The whole line was electrified, but low radius turns and poor track quality made high-speed rail transport impossible. Prior to the upgrading of this line in 2006, the railway's market share of Istanbul to Ankara passenger transit was 10%, with a travel time of ~6.5 hours. In 1994, an initial plan to upgrade the existing line was launched, named the Ankara--Istanbul Railway Line Rehabilitation Project. Smoothing of curves to allow running at around 100 km/h, and some track doubling were planned. The design specifications were not expected to meet future needs and no progress was made until 1999, when funding was obtained for a line between Esenkent and Eskişehir, to be operated at 200 km/h. Subsequently, this developed into the high speed line project with the expected line speed raised to 250 km/h. Contracts for this line were signed in 2000.The development of the 1994 railway rehabilitation project forms the first section of the Ankara--Istanbul high-speed line, and is expected to reduce in half the travelling time between the two cities, with hopes to capture a far greater share (78%) of the passenger transportation market between the two cities. The Marmaray project, which consists of a rail transport network around Istanbul and the world's deepest immersed tube railway tunnel under the Bosphorus strait, is also under construction. The Marmaray tunnel will connect the subway and railway lines on the European and Asian parts of Istanbul and Turkey, respectively.
