Rakvere is a town in northern Estonia and the administrative centre of the Lääne-Viru maakond (county), 20 km south of the Gulf of Finland of the Baltic Sea. Rakvere is the 8th most populous urban area in Estonia.

Rakvere Castle
The oldest known archeological traces of the ancient fortress on Rakvere's Vallimäe hill date from the 5th-6th century. Throughout the ages, Rakvere castle has belonged to Danish kings, knight-monks of the Livonian Order and the Swedish and Polish states. During the Polish-Swedish War of 1600-1629, the castle was partly blown up by the Polish troops in 1605, and later also by the Swedish army. The castle has lain in ruins ever since.
Today there is a theme park in the castle representing the everyday life of the 16th century.
Tarvas statue
Rakvere is also known now for its Tarvas statue of an aurochs, which was made by the Estonian sculptor Tauno Kangro. It is thought to be the largest animal statue in the Baltic region. It is situated on the edge of Vallimägi hill and was erected for the town's 700th birthday. Along with the granite block it sits on, the statue is seven meters long and four meters high and weighs about seven tons. The statue is made out of bronze. The names of the companies and private people who financed it are engraved in the granite block.

EXPLORING the STUNNING ISLAND of HIIUMAA! ESTONIA’S SECOND LARGEST ISLAND is FILLED with LIGHTHOUSES
In this video we continue our tour of Estonia as we drive around and explore the Island of Hiiumaa!
We start at the Helmerson Rock field, which is a group of over 80 Heilu rocks that were carried by glacial ice from Finland and are now located here in this forest on the Estonian island of Hiiumaa. As it’s only five minutes from Kärdla we make a stop to check out the Hiiumaa History museum before we leave to explore more of the island, check out our video: to see the tour of Kärdla church and marina.
We then head over to the Military museum which is a fascinating site as due to the position of the island of Hiiumaa, it really was the very edge of the border between the Soviet Union and Sweden and Finland so the Soviet army really protected the border and this coastline was closed for decades to the locals. Now it is all open and you can visit these military bases which are fascinating but also pretty scary inside the bunkers.
We then head off to explore the famous lighthouses of Hiiumaa all of which are so incredibly different from one another and each have a fascinating history. Starting with Tahkuna lighthouse which is the tallest lighthouse on the island standing at almost 43 metres tall. Here at the cape of Tahkuna we also visit the memorial of the MS Estonia ferry disaster which happened on September 28th 1994 when a passenger ferry travelling from Tallinn to Stockholm got caught in a storm causing it to capsize and trapping most of it’s passengers inside. Of the 989 passengers aboard, only 137 survived making it the second deadliest peacetime sinking of a European ship after the RMS Titanic disaster in 1912.
After a quick stop off at Luidja Rand because we love a beach, we head over to the iconic Kōpu lighthouse which although it is smaller in height than Tahkuna it is higher in terms of sea level due to it’s position on the island. This beautiful little island of Hiiumaa has wrecked many ships over the years due to it’s lethal shallows surrounding the island, which is why lighthouses such as this one, built in 1542 by order of the Hanseatic league, have been an imperative navigational aid for ships.
Our final lighthouse of the day is the bright red Ristna lighthouse which was built to warn sailors of drifting sea ice.
We finish this incredible day of exploring over at Surf Paradise beach, where we have some drinks and go for a stroll and a paddle in the sea!

SUMMER TOUR OF ESTONIA! HAAPSALU TOWN, TRAIN, COAST & HAUNTED CASTLE! PLUS MATSALU NATIONAL PARK!
In this video we continue our tour of Estonia as we explore the beautiful resort town of Haapsalu. This quaint little town has some great coffee shops, restaurants and shops all along the beautiful main street which is built around the stunning Haapsalu Castle. This castle has some fascinating history and is now used as a museum and the round chapel now serves as a concert venue, we just so happened to arrive the day a music festival was taking place!
As well as the main town and castle area, Haapsalu has a beautiful coastline and promenade which is a really popular tourist destination (we can see why!) After exploring the coast we head over to check out the train station which famously has the longest covered platform in Europe, it is no longer in use but has some really cool locomotives exhibited along the otherwise redundant platform.
We also jump on the cute little tourist train called ‘Little Peter’ which takes tourists on a 45 minute tour of Haapsalu. The rain came and we hoped this would shelter us but… you’ll see! :)
Whilst we were in Haapsalu we also took the time to head out of the main town and over to Matsalu National Park which is one of Europes most important waterfowl resting areas between the Arctic and Western Europe, making it a paradise for bird lovers and so we head up high to take in the views offered by this Estonian National Park!

Põltsamaa's stone fortress was constructed on the banks of the river in 1272. Between 1570 and 1578 it was the residence of Livonia's King Magnus. Repeatedly pillages, the castle was rebuilt by Woldemar Johann von Lauw in the 18th century as a grand rococo-style palace. The castle, and the church built into its cannon tower, burnt down in 1941. The church was restored by 1952, and the castle ruins came under preservation during the 1970s.

LEAVING ESTONIA’S MAINLAND TO EXPLORE THE ISLANDS! HIIUMAA ISLAND & KÄRDLA MARINA WITH FLYBOARD SHOW
In this video we leave Haapsalu and the Estonian mainland as we head over to Hiiumaa which is Estonia’s second largest island!
After checking into our accommodation in Hiiumaa’s largest town Kärdla, we walk across the road to see the Kärdla church which was constructed in 1863 and paid for by voluntary donations of the Broadcloth factory workers. The church is a simplistic and ascetic architectural monument and one of the most distinguished working-class churches built to represent the community that paid for its construction.
Across from the church there is a World War ll memorial which honours the fallen soldiers in Hiiumaa during WWll, it is dedicated to them all irrespective to which side they fought on. Hiiumaa’s lad represents how the past and future are linked within him.
Afterwards we head over to the beautiful nearby marina. Whilst walking around we couldn’t help but notice that this whole island feels like a real life Center Parcs! So stunning! Tall trees, woodland areas, quiet little streets with log cabins and wooden Estonian style houses everywhere, life on this island feels like paradise!
We stroll along past the marina which has a few lovely restaurants and lots of water sports activities. We find a beach with swings and a small beach side burger shack with great music and great smelling food so we decide to end our day there and enjoy an al fresco seaside dinner! We especially liked the retro theme of this Baywatch shack, really cool and a blast from the past! Speaking of blasts, we were treated to an insane sunset flyboard show out in the marina on our way back from dinner, what a welcome to Hiiumaa!

TOP THINGS TO DO IN TALLINN TV TOWER & BOTANICAL GARDENS Highest outdoor platform in Northern Europe
In this video we head out to the Tallinn Botanical Gardens where we walked around for about 3 hours - we could’ve easily spent all day there if we’d had the time, it’s so vast and beautiful! The garden of senses really impressed us with how much thought had been put into it, but the whole place is so well cared for and beautifully laid out.
After spending all afternoon enjoying nature we made the short walk over to the TV Tower as we bought joint tickets which cost 17€ per person for entry to the Botanical Gardens and TV Tower viewing platform. We learned that the viewing platform on the 21st floor officially closes at 7pm which just means that all the interactive exhibitions are turned off then but you can still be up there. Be warned the frosted glass circles on the floor do not stay frosted as Craig found out by accident looking straight down from 175m! They are great fun though. If you’re lucky enough to get a sunny clear day you can just about see Finland on the horizon!
There is also a really great restaurant on the next floor (22) where you can get everything from drinks, cakes and snacks to a full meal. More importantly there is Northern Europe’s highest open viewing platform up on the 22nd floor that is totally worth seeing, although as you’ll see here it gets pretty windy up there but they provide you with a blanket before you step outside and get blown around!
TKT Tip/Fact – If you’re planning a trip out to the Botanical gardens and TV Tower allow yourself plenty of time to make the most of both. We spent about 3 hours in each but could easily have spent longer in the gardens especially as it was sunny!

SECRETS OF TALLINN - Our Favourite Places Outside of The Old Town! TELLISKIVI, ROTERMANN & KALAMAJA!
In this video we take you on a tour of our top places of Tallinn outside of the Old Town. We start by heading over to Rotermann City within the Rotermann quarter, which until just a few years ago, was just a factory area between Old Town and the Passenger Port and was little more than a collection of dilapidated buildings, discarded leftovers of late 19th and early 20th-century industry. Now the area has been magnificently-restored and serves as home to a number of shops and restaurants, as well as an active cultural scene. The quarter's main square is often used for festivals and outdoor performances.
After eating lunch in Rotermann city we then make our way over to the Kalamaja district with our first stop being the Linnahall which upon initial sight doesn’t look very aesthetically pleasing but what lies beneath it is a huge amphitheatre designed to hold 4500 people. It was originally named the V. I. Lenin Palace of Culture and Sport, and was built by the Soviets for the Moscow 1980 Summer Olympics when the sailing events were hosted in Estonia. Now it is a vast, dilapidated building that although is in need of some serious renovation is still nonetheless fascinating to see up close and offers stunning views over the bay of Tallinn once you reach the top.
From the Linnahall we continue walking through Kalamaja along the bay and over to Patarei prison which was originally built in 1828 as a sea fortress and later turned into a prison where crimes of Communism and Nazism took place between 1940-1991. For 8€ you can visit the exhibition, ‘Communism is Prison’ in the eastern wing of the prison, where you can see the original interior and prison yard.
From there we take a quick look at the historical Seaplane harbour museum which is 15€ per adult and looks fascinating. We also take a walk around Suur Tõll, the largest preserved pre-war icebreaker in the world. Suur Tõll has had a colourful past of ownership between the Russian Empire (1914-1917), The Soviet Union (1917-1918), Finland (1918-1922), Estonia (1922-1940), Soviet Union again (1940-1988), before finally being sold back to Estonia in 1988.
After following the arrows which take you on a full tour of Suur Tõll we head over to Port Noblessener which is a newly and very artistically renovated port area with beautiful apartment blocks, filled with restaurants and great places to sit back and have a drink watching the sun over the bay of Tallinn.
Then we walk through Kalamaja Cemetery Park which links Port Noblessner to the leafy green residential area of Kalamaja and onto our final stop: Telliskivi Creative City which since 2007 has developed from old soviet factories into a vibrant, artist-friendly complex that has spaces for businesses, restaurants, shops and organising events. It is located between the city centre and Kalamaja and Pelgulinn districts in North Tallinn. It is currently Estonia's biggest creative economy enterprise centre bringing together a variety of activities - acting as a community platform for the creatives.
We both love Telliskivi and have spent most of our time in Tallinn living in an apartment building right opposite Depoo which is an area in Telliskivi where old shipping containers and an old train have all been converted into different restaurants with foods from around the world, it’s a really cool place to visit and we walk through it to get to the famous Balti Jaama Turg (Baltic Station Market) which is a place worth visiting in itself!

In this vlog we continue with our tour of the top sights of Tallinn. There is so much fascinating history to be appreciated, absorbed and hopefully to learn from in this country!
We take the tram from the Balti Jaam station over to Kadriorg Park where we then use the Bolt app to get us the rest of the way by car! After getting dropped off just outside the History Museum (Maarjamäe Palace) we make the quick walk over to the Maarjamäe Memorial Complex, although this area is situated just outside the main city centre (10 mins by car) it is worth venturing over for the History museum, Memorials and Pirita Beach :)
There are 3 main points of interest here which we will take you through in their chronological order:
* The German War cemetery (1941)
* The Soviet Memorial (1960-1975)
* The Estonian Memorial (2018)

The German military cemetery was created by the German army in 1941 but after the war ended and Estonia fell under Soviet occupation, all the German headstones were removed and a Soviet memorial was erected (1960) Later the Soviets replaced the headstones with memorial markers to the Red Army units that fought in Estonia. In 1998 the cemetery was re dedicated and is now portrayed by the triple granite crosses that you can see among the grass where the bodies of some 2,300 German soldiers are buried.
In 1960 an Obelisk was raised beside the sea in Tallinn’s subdistrict of Maarjamäe (which in Estonian means “Maria’s Hill”). It commemorated the Bolshevik victims of the 1918 Russian Civil War, part of which played out here when Allied nations intervened against the Bolshevik forces in the Baltics.
The obelisk alone was already controversial. The Bolsheviks had actually been fighting against Estonia during the conflict it referenced, and numerous memorials to Estonia’s own dead were removed during the years of Soviet occupation. Nevertheless, in 1965, a decision was made to expand the memorial complex at Maarjamäe.
The extended memorial complex was overseen by the architects Allan Murdmaa, Valve Pormeister, and Henno Sepmann. It was completed in 1975. At the sea end of the complex, a symbolic amphitheater overlooks the road to Pirita and offers a panoramic view over Tallinn Bay. An “eternal flame” once occupied a corner of this space, surrounded by evocative hand-shaped reliefs.
Since Estonia gained its independence from Soviet rule in 1991, the Maarjamäe Memorial Complex has faced an uncertain future. Its symbolism goes beyond being merely pro-Soviet, to being, arguably, even anti-Estonian in meaning; celebrating the Bolshevik troops who died fighting against independent Estonia in 1918, while featuring the graves of crewmen from two Russian battleships that had been shelling the port of Tallinn during the conflict. We note that this section of the memorial is not really maintained.
In 2018 An Estonian memorial was built adjacent to the Soviet and German memorials (during it’s construction further bodies of German soldiers were discovered).
The memorial consists of two parts – the Journey with plaques bearing the names of those who perished in the terror, and the Home Garden, to which are added location stones with information texts marking the locations where the terror was carried out. A monument to Estonian officers who fell victim to the communist terror is also part of the Memorial.
The communist regime of terror was established with the occupation of Estonia on 17 June 1940 and ended with the restoration of Estonia’s independence on 20 August 1991. Estonia lost every fifth person of its population of slightly over a million, of which more than 75,000 were murdered, imprisoned or deported. The Memorial to the victims of communism is dedicated to all of them.
