TUR#10 ~ Pt 1 Southeast Turkey - Antakya, Antep, Kahta, Mt Nemrut, Arsemia, Karakus, Severan Bridge

Part 1 - With a bunch of sailing friends from Finike Marina, we went on a guided mega tour through southeast Turkey, about 1100 km or 700 miles. A huge trip. So much was seen, so much was learned, so much was experienced. It's so hard not to tell you all every detail because everything was so important, but it would be too long and, dare I say, boring. Nobody wants to see a home movie about history. Yikes. What we can do is share what southeast Turkey has to offer; unfortunately, it can only be a glimpse...

Looking for more ~
I found a really great site called Turkish Archaeological News ~ To all our light readers and/or light history fans, this site is super easy to read. It's NOT wiki. It's very enjoyable to read, very down to earth I would say, not long and boring with facts upon facts. I definitely recommend checking it out & a great way to plan your own trip.

Here's a list of search subjects mentioned in this video on this website ~
Mount Nemrut
Karakus Tumulus
Arsameia
Severan (Cendere) Bridge
Yeni Kale Fortress in Eski Kahta

ProTips ~
Hand gestures -
It turns out, some hand gestures are not universal. Who knew. When we were having the dessert, haytali, I raised my hand to indicate I was the one having the tea. The confusion: I raised my hand to indicate I was the one having the tea but it was interpreted as no, stop, not me. I thought that was interesting. Another gesture is using the pointer finger to sign 'one second.' You know the one, hold on, I'll be one sec, yeah that one, not widely known in Turkey. Also, the air check symbol sign to silently indicate you'd like your bill/check at a restaurant... nope... better to air sign your name in your raised hand.

Bathrooms -
If you are looking for a bathroom, it is widely called the WC, toilet, or tuvalet. 'Bathroom' isn't easily understood and forget 'restroom' altogether. An easy way to remember which is the women's & men's bathroom, bay has 3 letters like men and bayan has 5 letters like women. Also, keep a couple Turkish lira just in case there's a charge.

Arsemia Cave -
The cave is supposed to go down the mountain and out the other side as an escape tunnel. With Tarik & Matt leading the way, several people went into this cave. What they found out was it's dangerous, lol. Matt tells the story of how the step height gets more shallow as you go on, making it more of a slide. The erosion caused gravel, which made each step more shallow and slippery the further down they went. It was pitch black, so they used their iphone. Tarik threw a rock into the abyss but they never heard it stop, just grow fainter. They turned around and came out a little nervous.

Their thought later was if it was wet, the steps would be slick. You might slide down to who knows where and not be able to get out. Even further, if the water didn't flow out somewhere, there would be a pool at the bottom... then what. They probably should have this roped off or something.

Purchases ~
As we mentioned in the video, every region or city has its own unique gifts, shoes, foods, copper, etc. Although you can purchase anything essentially anywhere, try to make purchasing decisions based on what that region or city is known for. Once you leave there, you will be able to find what you want, but it may not have the same skillful craftsperson behind it. If you are unsure at that moment, bc let's just say you just got there and you don't know what's what yet, get a card. Businesses are really willing to ship.

A big thank you to Tarik for lining everything up and making this trip possible, to Baran for taking special care of us so we could have a well-instructed & safe trip, and to our beautiful friends, thank you for allowing us to film. It was our first trip filming and we didn't know how to get it done. Of 13 people, we only annoyed two. Not bad.

Yeni Kahta Kalesi/ Kahta fort by Drone, Stunning Views & Travel Guide Nemrut, Adiyaman Turkey

This video presents you some of the drone footages that I took in Sep,2021 about Yeni kale, or someone called Kahta Kalesi(Kahta fort).
I also provide some useful guide informations about this stunning fort.
Original text and video by Justin Belzone

On the way to Mount Nemrut, you will pass a small village called Kahta. you could make a stop at the foot of the village, from where you could enjoy the luring silhouette of Yeni Kale. This military fortress, which is very similar to the Syrian Crusaders' castle, is also called the Kahta Fort by the locals, and it is perched high on the ridge of the mountains of Kahta.
Fortresses and lookouts were built here in the times of Commagene and Rome due to its strategic location. Later on, Arabs began to remodel and expand it during their occupation, thus the fort gradually spreads to the westernmost end of the ridge. In the 13th century, the Mamluks who ruled Egypt and Syria added a lookout here, which was connected to the main body of the fortress via a narrow corridor built over a steep ridge.
A winding staircase leads from the castle to the river below the mountain, which is used to ensure water supply. There is also said to be a hidden vaulted tunnel that connects from the stairs to the other side of the ridge.
In addition, the castle has an independent postal system. A well-preserved pigeon loft with perches for 32 birds has been identified and tentatively dated to the 12th century.

Entry Title: Urfa, Adiyaman, Kahta, and Nemrut... What a day!

Entry:

Tuesday, May 15, Gaziantep to Urfa: Today was the most frustrating day. I got up early and went to the Gaziantep Otogar, where I caught a 3 hour ride to Urfa. I had extensively searched Internet websites for information on tours to Mount Nemrut, one of the most famous mountains in Turkey, from Urfa. Everything I knew pointed to Yes. But really, this was not an option, as I was to find out. I got to Urfa and spotted Metro Turizm, a familiar name in a sea of unfamiliarity. I learned where to catch a bus to Balikli Gol (which means the Lake of Fishes), Urfa's main tourist attraction and pilgrimmage site. Usually the good hotels and travel agencies ring around the most popular tourist sites of a city. I was wrong. Urfa only had one travel agency that I could find. I located it after walking a half hour uphill in the burning sun toting my big bag. I found the Hotel Ipek, which I knew from the Internet as an upscale establishment, and asked about tours. We run tours to Nemrut every Sunday, said the gal at the desk with a smile. You can go and arrange it with our tour manager. 'Yeah, right, I'll just wait here 'till Sunday,' I thought bitterly. I took off back to the Otogar, still hoping to find a tour agency. I went to Metro and they sent me around the corner to the local mini-bus stop. Mini-buses run from Urfa to Adiyaman every hour, and thereafter to Kahta. The cost for a trip is 7.50-10 lira and is about 100 kilometers from Urfa to Adiyaman , which can take 2 hours as the bus picks up and drops off numerous passengers along the way. The little man at the mini-bus stand called up a friend and gave me the phone. We talked and agreed on a 70 lira stay and tour. After the ride to Adiyaman I was put on another mini-bus bound toward Kahta, which is 30 kilometers from Adiyaman and is the main springboard town to Mount Nemrut. On the way I talked to a nice old Kurdish man who I couldn't convince that I wasn't from Germany. Where are you from? he would ask me. Canada, I would say. Alimanya? he asks (which is the Turkish word for Germany), and I say, No, Canada. Italya? No, C... Alimanya. Slovakia. Austria. Albania... He was listing more than asking, now. No, no, K-A-N-A-D-A. Canada. Sprekin ze Deutsch? The tour bus dropped me at a small tourist office of Kommagenetour, and I must explicitly state right now, I do NOT recommend this tour agency, not it's tours nor it's accomodations. The operators charge twice the price of many other tour agencies, and for a tour that they boast shows you more than Nemrut (by more they mean an old bridge and a statue). I was told that 140 YTL got me a hotel, a tour, and I didn't have to pay any entrace fees, of which there were two at 10 YTL each. But I just talked to another man who quoted me 70 YTL, with breakfast included, I said. Yes, but with me you can go tonight and see the sunset. The weather is beautiful today. It was bad yesterday. Who knows what it will be tomorrow? And, my friend, listen. This man... may I see his card please?... this man will make you pay the entrance fees, which are 10 lira at the bridge and 10 lira at Nemrut Dagi. And you won't get to see this bridge, he said with a smile. Since I was on a very tight schedule, I agreed to a 125 lira deal, which hurt me deeply since it was more than a third of my entire budget. It hurt me even more deeply after I saw how dirty and poor the room was. On the up side, my driver magically showed up right as the money brushed the guy's palm, and off we went to catch the sunset on Mount Nemrut. Now usually for 140 lira or so, which is an extraordinary amount for a tour in Turkey, you get a guide who speaks your own language and knows the history of the area. Not so with Mehmet, a Kurdish guy with a lot of energy and a lead foot. Cabuk cabuk! he would hollar as we flew past the first few sights that I was apparently paying extra to see. Quick quick! The sun sets in 2 hours. You came late. It's better to come early and go slow.

Entry Title: Kahta - stepping off point for Nemrut Dagi

Entry:

(Jim)

From Gaziantep we made a slight detour north-east towards the town of Kahta, which is the most convenient launch point for visits to the funerary temple of Nemrut Dagi, located on the top of a mountain in the Anti-Taurus Range. Despite the distance to the mountain (about 50km) we had been able to catch a glimpse of the temple as we approached Kahta in the service taxi, only adding to our expectations of seeing it close up. Nemrut Dagi was built by the pre-Roman King Antiochus I in around 50 B.C, as a personal tomb and monument to his life. His thinking when building the temple was that if he created a sufficiently ambitious monument, decorated it with statues of all the great gods his people knew of, and then gave his own statue pride of place in the middle of them all, that he would assure his own place in the pantheon of gods. Like so many other world-renowned ruins (the Pyramids, Machu Picchu, Petra, etc) Nemrut was forgotten about for many centuries, only being rediscovered by a German surveyor in 1881.

The guide book had said that Kahta had a reputation as a bit of rip-off town, and we did have to bargain hard to get a decent fare from the town up to the temple and back again. After haggling for a while we climbed into another service taxi and made our way across the plains towards Nemrut. Despite there being an almost 2 hour drive to the mountain we were both loving the commute. The scenery was what I can only describe as primal -- the plains leading up to the foothills were completely barren and scoured with steep gullies where seasonal rains ran into the rivers. Occasionally we would pass tiny villages where we saw entire families (we assumed the kids only worked part-time) out working in the fields. John Deere obviously hasn't been to visit this part of the world because everything we saw being done was being done by hand -- a lot of it truly back-breaking stuff.

As we climbed higher towards Nemrut we got a better and better view of the terrain to the south -- more and more of the same scorched earth, with the occasional emerald green lake to break up the shades of tan and brown. Quite spectacular. The final climb to the car-park was an amazing collection of hairpin turns on a weather-beaten and cobbled road. From the car-park we climbed the final 600m to the summit, where the temple itself awaited.

Before the temple was built the mountain had a fairly rounded summit, however King Antiochus had ordered the construction of a 50m high cone of stones to be built on the top. This is what we had seen when approaching Kahta in the service taxi, standing proud from the summit like a mountain-sized pimple. Up close we could see the work that had gone into constructing it -- each rock was no bigger than the size of a coconut so the workers must have carried literally millions of them up there to get the pile that high. On the east and west sides of the rock pile were two terraces, each adorned with statues of the gods and King Antiochus. At some time in history the heads had fallen or been pushed off the statues, so are now lined up in front of the bodies keeping a silent vigil over the surrounding landscape. Each head is between 1m (the bird-like heads of Zeus) and 2m (King Antiochus) tall, and have a particularly eerie quality as they stare silently into the distance.

Although we only finalised our plan to come to Nemrut Dagi at the last minute for me at least it formed another highlight of the trip -- there was something magic about the temple and it's surrounds that really resonated with me. Maybe it was simply because Nemrut provides a perfect blend of breathtaking location, incredible history and a simply stunning collection of ruins.

the Adiyaman Province of Turkey in the south east of the country is not wealthy – it is still classified as a developing rural region. Yet 25 miles from the small town of Kâhta the visitor discovers the remnants of once fabulous wealth. High on the summit of Mount Nemrut is a huge but little visited necropolis, home to the beheaded gods of the past.
Forty kilometers north of Kahta, Turkey, lies Mount Nemrut, a mountain adorned with the fragments of vast statues built over 2000 years ago. The stone sculptures once stood nearly 10 meters high and depicted lions, eagles, various ancient gods, and King Antiochus I Theos, who ruled Commagene from 86 BC to 38 BC. Ruins of the bodies of several sitting figures are visible on the hill above, illuminated by moonlight. Zeus' head can be found near the above image's center, while the king's head is seen next closest to the horizon. Visible far in the distance in this image, taken three months ago, is the familiar constellation of Orion. The red patch just below Orion's belt is the Orion Nebula, while the bright star to the left of Orion is Sirius. On the far left, a red and brightening horizon announces that the Sun is beginning to rise.

ENG - Nemrut Dağ is in the list of UNESCO World Heritage. The mausoleum of Antiochus I (69–34 B.C.), who reigned over Commagene, a kingdom founded north of Syria and the Euphrates after the breakup of Alexander's empire, is one of the most ambitious constructions of the Hellenistic period. The syncretism of its pantheon, and the lineage of its kings, which can be traced back through two sets of legends, Greek and Persian, is evidence of the dual origin of this kingdom's culture.
