S1 – Ep 482 – Van Dyksbaai, Kleinbaai, Franskraal and Uilenkraalsmond, Western Cape!

We took a long drive from Pniёl to explore Van Dyksbaai, Van Kleinbaai, Franskraal, and Uilenkraalsmond on the South Coast of the Western Cape. The journey was fantastic, and visiting these beautiful places was a real treat. We had fun at the Gansbaai Golf Club, where the happy golfers were gathered at the 19th hole. It was sad to see the old Strandveld Museum closed, but we were truly inspired by the volunteers working diligently to maintain the garden. Overall, we had a fantastic time driving around this spectacular area. #DustBugs #dustbugstravel #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #westerncape #kleinbaai #franskraal

S1 – Ep 343 – Jacobsdal – A Town Showcasing its Rich History!

Our visit to Jacobsdal was an adventure that made the five-hour drive completely worthwhile. Upon arrival, we were captivated by the stunning church, which held a remarkable secret: it had served as a hospital during the historic Anglo-Boer War. The sight of a bullethole in the church door vividly reminded us of the intense conflicts that once raged in this area. As we ventured further, we stumbled upon a blockhouse on the outskirts of the town, leaving us in awe of this town that was showcasing its rich history. However, it was the charming old houses, particularly the original farmhouse, that truly stole our hearts. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #jacobsdal

S1 – Ep 303 – Brandvlei – Impressed with the Peaceful Surroundings and Sights!

We arrived at Brandvlei a bit later than expected, but that didn't stop us from having an amazing experience. The first thing we did was have dinner at Die Windpomp Restaurant, and I must say the food was absolutely stunning. I think it's safe to say that we were both impressed with the quality of the dishes that were served. After dinner, we made our way to our accommodation for the night. We spent the rest of the evening relaxing and enjoying the peaceful surroundings. The next morning, we had breakfast before heading out to explore the town. One of the first things we saw was the beautiful church, which was truly a sight to behold. We also had the chance to see the hotel which they are in the process of renovating, and even though it was still a work-in-progress, we could already tell that it was going to be gorgeous once it was finished. Overall, our visit to Brandvlei was a wonderful experience. From the amazing food to the bare and barren landscapes to the beautiful sights we saw around town. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #brandvlei

S1 – Ep 350 – Hartswater – A Touching Monument Honouring Women!

Our trip to Hartswater was truly memorable and welcoming. The Poplar trees lining the road, a unique sight found and the longest of its kind in the world, created a picturesque drive. The small, adorable church at the town's entrance was a touching monument honouring women who played a significant role during the depression and when the Vaalharts Water Scheme began. As we explored further, the bustling activity in the town was heartening to witness, and we were pleasantly surprised to stumble upon a lively golf tournament at the town's Golf Course. The schools and sports facilities were in excellent condition, a testament to the town's dedication to maintaining their community. Even in the church they were sanding down the pews for varnishing before the next service. Hartswater left a lasting impression of a functional agricultural town filled with hardworking and caring individuals, making our visit truly special. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #hartswater

S1 – Ep 353 – Hoopstad – Japie Greyling, the Brave Child Hero!

After leaving Bloemhof, our excitement at entering the Free State was short-lived as we navigated the worst road we have experienced on our travels yet, on our way to Hoopstad. However, the situation improved after about 15 kilometers. We were greeted by vast stretches of maize fields as far as the eye could see the deeper we got into the Free State. Approaching Hoopstad, the towering concrete silo's stood prominently on the horizon, as a testament to the town's agricultural roots. The strong farming community was evident as we explored the town, and we were struck by the grandeur of yet another magnificent church building at its centre. On the church grounds, we discovered the memorial of the brave child hero, Japie Greyling, whose remarkable bravery during the Anglo-Boer War left a lasting impression. The sight of the Correctional Facility in town added to the town's intriguing mix of places to see. Despite the initial challenges we had with the condition of the road, it was an overall fulfilling and informative visit to Hoopstad. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #hoopstad

S1 – Ep 348 – Warrenton – A Wonderfully Operational Train Station!

Our trip to Warrenton in the Northern Cape was an awesome experience, despite arriving in the dark once again and just as loadshedding struck. We indulged in delicious Portuguese food from O Galo, before settling into our accommodation. The next morning, we were finally able to witness the beauty of the place, and it did not disappoint. After a delightful cup of coffee, we made our way to the Vaal River, a mere 200 meters from our unit, and were awestruck by its stunning vistas. Exploring the town was a delight, as we encountered a charming old steam engine, the historic old bridge, a wonderfully operational train station, and the intriguing old blockhouse near the railway bridge. Overall, our visit to Warrenton was a fantastic experience filled with captivating sights and memorable moments. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #warrenton #vaalriver

S1 – Ep 351 – Christiana – We Crossed the Wide Vaal River Again!

On our way to Christiana, we were captivated by the impressive Vaalharts Irrigation Scheme, witnessing vast canals supplying water to the area, a sight that pleasantly surprised us. The journey through town led us over a remarkable, long single-lane steel-girded bridge which crossed the wide Vaal River. On the other side we attempted to find the nearby rock engravings. We couldn't locate them, but on the bright side, we had to cross the bridge for a second time! Our curiosity also led us to the Christiana on the Vaal Resort, which was closed because of the recent floods. Driving through the town we were amazed by an early twentieth-century church building which was absolutely gorgeous. We saw the Town Hall from a distance and we were saddened by it being burnt down due to unrest. On a more positive note, we had the opportunity to visit the well-organised school, the Christiana School for the Blind. However, on our way out of town we passed the hospital and saw that it had burnt down due to human error while renovations were being done. Despite the mixed emotions, the visit was a unique and memorable experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northwestprovince #christiana

S1 – Ep 358 – Brandfort – We Found Evidence of the Pioneers of Van Life!

Our visit to Brandfort was an intriguing and diverse experience. Upon arriving in the town, we were greeted by a vibrant community engaged in playing tennis on the courts and children playing on the rugby fields. The town's history came to life as we encountered the poignant sight of a beautiful church adorned with a monument dedicated to the memory of the women, children, and farm workers who tragically lost their lives in the concentration camp nearby during the Anglo-Boer War. The presence of other notable monuments, such as the two Voortrekker monuments, the centenary celebration monument, and the 150-year monument, further enriched our understanding of the region's heritage. Despite our eagerness to explore, we encountered a slight setback when attempting to visit the concentration camp cemetery, which is now located on private property. Nevertheless, the highlight of our visit came in the form of a fascinating discovery: the home of Rear Admiral John Weston, the visionary behind Africa's first-ever aeroplane. Notably, we found intriguing evidence suggesting that Weston and his family might have been the pioneers of what we now know as Van Life, as he constructed the world's first RV and embarked on an extraordinary 18-month journey across Africa. Additionally, a remarkable but somber find during our time in Brandfort was the story of the unmarked grave of Vincent Van Gogh's youngest brother, Cornelius Van Gogh, adding yet another layer of historical significance to this remarkable town. Our time in Brandfort left us with a deep appreciation for its rich history and the exceptional individuals who have contributed to its unique tapestry. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #brandfort

S1 – Ep 355 – Dealesville – Viewing the Salt Pans During an Awesome Sunset!

Our visit to Dealesville was filled with delightful surprises and warm encounters. As we embarked on our journey to the town, we were thrilled to witness a warthog crossing the road with its tail held high while running through the open field, and the sight of farming vehicles along the way added to the rural charm. Upon entering the town, we sensed a contentment and pride among the locals. On the outskirts, we discovered a stunning salt pan, initially mistaken for a dam. In our explorations, we met a gentleman who had taken it upon himself to revive the old sports complex into a beautiful wedding venue and sports facility, and he generously invited us to his renovated guest house, which we would hope to overnight at someday. The church and Voortrekker memorials provided a glimpse into the history and culture of the town. However, the presence of a military contingent left us curious as to why they were there. Departing from Dealesville, we decided to stop at the salt pans one last time. They left us in awe of their natural beauty during sunset. Inspired by the community's earnest efforts to rejuvenate and uplift their beloved town, we left the town with sweet memories of our visit. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #freestate #dealesville

S1 – Ep 289 – Misgund – Our Visit to this Farming Town in the Langkloof!

As we arrived in the town of Misgund on the R62, we were greeted by the sight of two men walking and picking up litter, which was a great indication of the cleanliness and civic pride in the town. After that, we stopped at the General Dealer to take a look inside and then had some leftover pizza for lunch. As we drove through the rest of the town, we were struck by the beauty of the large church. I couldn't see a cornerstone, but did notice that the bell was manufactured in 1963, which was an interesting detail. Additionally, we were thrilled to find the old Misgund Station, even though it's no longer functional, as it gave us a glimpse into the history of the town and the Apple Express. Despite the rain, we had a great time watching the tractors full of apples and pears coming to the warehouse and being offloaded. This gave us a sense of the agricultural heritage of the town and the hard work that goes into farming. Overall, our visit to the farming town of Misgund in the Langkloof was a fascinating and enjoyable experience, filled with interesting sights and experiences. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #easterncape #misgund #apple

S1 – Ep 309 – Hotazel – An Interesting Visit to this Mining Town!

The tar road from Deben to Hotazel proved to be the most treacherous one we had ever encountered. Despite its rough conditions, the journey itself was fascinating. During our visit to this mining town several interesting things caught our eye. Amongst others was the well-equipped gym and the extensive recreational club, which offered an array of engaging activities and opportunities for leisure. Whether it was sports, social gatherings, or cultural events, this club served as a vibrant hub for the local community to come together and foster a sense of cameraderie outside of working hours. It was apparent that the town placed great importance on providing its residents with outlets for relaxation and enjoyment. Moreover, the cleanliness and neatness of Hotazel made a lasting impression on us. The well-maintained streets and tidy public spaces reflected the pride the community takes in their surroundings, contributing to a sense of order and tranquility. Overall, our trip to Hotazel, despite the challenging road conditions, was a captivating experience. #DustBugs #adventuretravel #southafrica #southafricavlog #travelongravel #northerncape #hotazel
