7 LUGARES QUE DEBES VISITAR EN HIDALGO

one of the most beautiful places in mexico

Las Grutas de Tolantongo may be Hidalgo's best secret - mountainside thermal water pools, caves, and a turquoise river!
►Subscribe to our channel!

It's our first time in the Mexican state of Hidalgo and we're driving deep into a canyon to experience the thermal water pools and mysterious Grutas de Tolantongo. We could not have been more excited to experience the magic of this canyon paradise in person and it did not disappoint. Despite the cold temperatures in Hidalgo at this time of year, we happily soaked in the therapeutic properties of the thermal waters in the mountain.

In this Mexico travel vlog, we also experience the turquoise-colored river of Tolantongo. We found out that it has this beautiful color because of the minerals in the water. On our last day in Grutas de Tolantongo, we made the grand finale a trip to the main gruta, or grotto in English. Again, Tolantongo did not disappoint us with this mysterious cave filled with the source of the warm thermal waters. It was the perfect experience for another cold morning in Hidalgo.

Also in this travel Mexico vlog, we include:
1. How much hotels cost at Grutas de Tolantongo
2. Entry fees and parking prices in Tolantongo
3. Tips for visiting Grutas de Tolantongo Hidalgo
4. Important information for traveling to Tolantongo
5. What we will do differently when we return to this canyon paradise.

This was one of those Mexico experience that really made us say, WOW, Mexico is amazing and it never ceases to amaze us. Does this Mexico travel vlog make you want to visit? If you get the chance, we highly recommend visiting Grutas de Tolantongo and we don't think you'll be sorry you did.

Tolantongo is a box canyon and resort located 17 kilometres from Ixmiquilpan on Route 27 in the Mezquital Valley, State of Hidalgo in Mexico, It is about 1.5 hours northwest of Pachuca and 198 km or three-to-four hours northwest of Mexico City. The closest village to the resort is called El Cardonal and it is part of Cardonal Municipality

From the Nahuatl Tonaltonko (Home where it feels warm). In his book Lo que el viento nos dejo: hojas de terruno hidalguense, journalist Enrique Rivas Paniagua gives the etymology of Tolantongo a very deep look: ... the neighboring towns called it Tonaltongo (derivation of Tonaltonko), ... but in 1975 when this eden was discovered and was promoted by the magazine Mexico Desconocido the name was misspelled and that is how it officially got the name Tolantongo.

The resort is made up of three hotel complexes and heated pools near the bottom of a steep box canyon that has walls as much as 500 meters high. Its main attraction are two grottos at the canyon’s closed end, out of which flows a small volcanically-heated river which follows the canyon floor. The large grotto chamber is about half the size of a tennis court with a ceiling of up to ten metres. Above the grotto is a “tunnel”, a small cavern 15 metres deep in which warm water showers those who venture inside. Around these two openings, warm waterfalls flow down the steep canyon walls Here visitors can practice hiking, rappelling and spelunking.

The resort is located in a semi-desert zone, surrounded by rock formations carved by water flow and geological pressures. Exposed rock shows sedimentary layers that have folded. This and water erosion have created capricious forms that are all around this part of Hidalgo state. The high peaks in this area are often shrouded in mist. Cacti and semi-arid vegetation predominate in the hills above the canyon, with pine trees at the higher elevations. The rugged peaks have a great deal of biological diversity. Among the plant species to be found are yucca (Yucca spp), mesquite (Prosopis spp.), tall cacti called “viejitos” (little old ones) (Cephalocereus senilis), named so because their upper spines whiten and flatten, creating a grey-hair-like look, gumbo-limbos (Bursera simaruba), poinsettias (Euphorbia pulcherrima) as well as the abundant magueys that have been used for centuries to make pulque, a fermented beverage. Animals that can be seen include raccoons (Procyon lotor), greater roadrunners (Geococcyx californianus), hooded skunks (Mephitis macroura), white-nosed coatis (Nasua narica) and white-winged doves (Zenaida asiatica). Also, the area has been inhabited by various indigenous peoples such as the Otomi, the Mexica, the Toltecs and the Tepehua.

To arrive at the resort, one must leave the highway and travel down an unpaved road that winds its way down the side of one of the canyon walls. At the bottom of the canyon, the vegetation changes from semi-desert to semi-tropical due to the abundance of water and the humid warmth the river and falls give to the place. In some areas, the vegetation is quite exuberant. The beauty of the area enticed a Mexican soap opera or “telenovela” to shoot a number of romantic scenes here.

Grutas de Tolantongo MEXICO! | Worth it? | Mexico City Day Trip Guide | Hidalgo, MX Travel Vlog 2022

Travel Vlog #102 | Grutas de Tolantongo, Mexico (Hidalgo, Mexico)

***Book a guided group tour here!*** -
***If you want a private tour, book here*** -

Today we are back in Mexico City and heading on a day trip! We set out early in the morning to head to a still somewhat hidden area - Grutas de Tolantongo in Hidalgo! These are hot baths naturally heated from the earth by a nearby (dormant) volcano. The area has been built up with pools, restaurants, and hotels, and this is the perfect Mexico City day trip!
We started out by seeing the sunrise and visiting a breakfast stop on the side of the road. We had some delicious quesadillas with chicken and mole!.
Our guide was one of the best parts of this day trip to Tolantongo hot springs, and he knew all of the best spots. Our first special stop was a scenic viewpoint to appreciate the mountains of Hidalgo. After our car (and ourselves) were sanitized, we were in!
From there, we first visited a tunnel with water coming out of every crevice. It was warm and felt amazing since it was cooler outside! Mexico is known in tourism as being a warm weather destination, but this area of Mexico is quite cool out, since it's in the mountains at a higher elevation. Coming out of the warm tunnel into the cold air was quite a shock!
After a freezing (but fun) walk across a suspension bridge, we finally headed to the hot spring pools! There are so many different pools and levels, you could spend hours exploring the whole area, but sadly we didn't have that much time. We chose first to visit a pool with a direct view of the mountains, which was beautiful, and then we headed to a higher pool. The higher the pool, the warmer the water. We sat up at the top for a while and enjoyed the BEAUTIFUL scenery.
After we were done at the pools we headed to the tunnels and cave! The way the entrance to the cave looks is one of the most unique things we've ever seen. The cave and tunnel have some of the warmest water since they're the highest up! For lunch, we visited the onsite restaurant. They had traditional Mexican dishes and everything was delicious. To end our time at Grutas de Tolantongo, we headed to the river as our last stop. Our gopro died shortly after getting in the water, but we recommend the river for sure!
