The Peaceful Pilgrimage to Tuscany's Hidden Convent
This tour starts from Orbetello, continues to Punta Telegrafo for a visit to the Convent of the Passionist Fathers in Monte Argentario in Tuscany. This tour was filmed on August 01, 2021.
A cozy place but full of faith and poignant beauty. It was an oasis, a stronghold in the eighteenth century that allowed the order to defend itself from raids, malaria, plague.
The convent is the first created by St. Paul of the Cross in 1737 for the congregation of Passionist friars, a congregation that remembers and is inspired to mendicant orders like the Franciscans and Dominicans.
At the time the convent was built it was certainly a place where a hermit's life was led as the area at the foot of the Argentario affected by malaria.
Today, especially in summer, it is a place to meditate in an area of holidays and worldliness.
The panorama is unique and allows you to see the Orbetello lagoon, the Feniglia and the Giannella until you see Talamone to the north and Montalto di Castro to the south.
From the convent you can continue up to Monte Telegrafo.
The convent has a small shop where religious items and congregational-inspired publications as well as products such as the Argentarium herbal liqueur can be purchased.
A short distance away there is the refreshment point and the spring. The church of the convent is small with an elliptical plan with the portrait of the Madonna Regina dell'Argentario.
Masses, when a greater influx is expected, are nevertheless held in the evocative setting of the external courtyard.

The site was frequented in prehistoric times: remains of the Neolithic and Bronze Age artifacts have been found.
It was part of the Aurunci territory, then conquered by the Romans, who built the Appian Way in 312 BC. The site acquired importance as a strategic place, however a very substantial inhabited nucleus was not formed, even if it is probable the presence of a small town, if only as a post station.
An ancient road layout, of which remains of paving stones was found, connected the place to the current Sperlonga.
The presence of a snake on the city coat of arms gave rise to the legend, devoid of archaeological evidence, that the foundation of the city was derived from the inhabitants of the city of Amyclae, who fled inland for an invasion of snakes. According to this legend, the name of the city derives from the mythological figure of the Hydra of Lerna.
The first news of Itri dates back to 914 (in a deed of sale a Stefano, itrano is mentioned). Between the 9th and 11th centuries the castle was built on a hill overlooking the passage of the Via Appia.
Itri was part of the duchy of Gaeta and then passed under the Dell'Aquila, lords of Fondi and then to the Caetani. It always belonged to the diocese of Gaeta. There the knight dynasty of Itri arose, occasionally lords of the city of the same name over the centuries.
The inhabited area first arose around the castle and only later expanded along the Via Appia.
Fra 'Diavolo (Michele Pezza) was born there in 1771, who was first an outlaw and then a colonel in the Bourbon army of Ferdinand IV, fighting against the occupation of the French, who took him and hanged him in Naples in 1806. The personality of Fra Diavolo was the inspiration for various literary, theater and cinema works
From the 13th century until 1861 it was part of the Kingdom of Naples (later Kingdom of the Two Sicilies).
In 1911 there were 500 of the approximately 1000 Sardinian emigrants who had arrived in the municipality to work on the fifth lot of the Rome-Naples roads.
During the Second World War, in May 1944, bombing destroyed the town and its monuments by 75%.

Itri Town view and valley with Sanctuary della Civita on Mountaintop pt 2
Another breathtaking view of the town of Itri taken a bit further down then pt1 on this you can get the idea of the towns location and the valley in which it's located on the Mountaintop as i zoom you can see the Sanctuary of the Madonna della Civita located appx. 10 min drive from town where you can get a view of the gulf of Gaeta and as far away as Terracina and the Circeo where rests of the neanderthal man where found. The local town people actually walk from town to the sanctuary as a sign of faith to the Madonna who is also the town's patron's saint.
