Castello Aragonese which is Italian for Aragon Castle. DRONE VIEW! - Ortona Italy - ECTV
Castello aragonese (Italian for Aragon Castle) is a Renaissance castle in Ortona, Province of Chieti (Abruzzo).[1]
The first building dates back to 1492. The Aragonese family built it over the old Caldora structure of the 14th century. This structure, however, dates back to the 13th century Anglican era. According to the same hypothesis, Giacomo Cavuto could have strengthened the castle that could have been pre-existent. In the 15th century there were some adaptations and partial reconstructions of a pre-existing plant.[2]
The castle was defensive until the 17th century when it was bought by the Baglioni family as a noble residence. A gentile palace was built inside the walls, which in the 19th century fell abandoned. Since then the castle was used as a workshop and powder.[3] In 1943 during the Battle of Ortona, the castle was hit by German bombs and American grenades. The gunpowder stored inside made the structure explode, all over the top of the walls and the noble palace skyrocketed. In '46 a landslide destroyed almost half of the castle, the one facing the sea from the tuff cliff.
Architecture
The base is almost trapezoidal and it is characterized by four cylindrical corner towers (though only three have survived today) and curtains on a scarp. The west side was occupied by a residential building. Some photos of the early 1900s show the baron-like palace inside the 18th-century walls, reworked by the fortification control room.
Today the palace remains a piece of perimeter wall with decorations of the frame. The walls have a shoe plant, with two large circular towers placed on the side of Matteotti course, from where it is accessed today. The towers are typical of the period, because they have the largest shoe base, and the cylindrical central body with Gothic arch windows (those of the west tower are rectangular). On the west wall there is also a third smaller, always cylindrical tower, with an arched, arched window. The pavement of the base of the entrance side, with arcades on the masonry of the castle, makes it clear that the structure had a ditch of water.
The interior is accessible from a small garden bordering the walls, and from a ladder above the remains of a side tower. The interior is bare due to the destruction of the war and has been rehabilitated in the garden, with retaining the walls to the entrance side of the Matteott course. In fact, there are stairs leading to the basement of the castle, while a second staircase leads to the Museum of the West Tower: there are panels of the historical photos of the castle and furnishings of the noble families that possessed the structure.

Ispica is an Italian commune in the free commune of Konsortium Ragusa in the autonomous region of Sicily with 16,334 inhabitants. The neighboring municipalities are Modica, Noto (SR), Pachino (SR), Pozzallo and Rosolini (SR). The area around Ispica was already inhabited by people in prehistoric times. This testifies inter alia. the Tomba del Principe in a Bronze Age necropolis in the Cava d’Ispica. In the Middle Ages there was a place that the Normans expanded. The city was destroyed by an earthquake in 1693 and rebuilt on the same site. Until 1935 the city was called Spaccaforno. Ispica, the old Hispicaefundus, is located on a hill. Approx. 170 m above sea level M. and 6 km from the sea. The city reveals a chess-shaped street structure from the 18th century. It is located next to an ancient fortress from the Middle Ages (now ruins). This was the center of the city, at the end of the Cava di Ispica until the earthquake of 1693. Life in this city was very intense during the Renaissance. The archaeological finds are evidence of a continuity of life from the Bronze Age. One of the most important tourist attractions is certainly the old town with its remarkable works in the Baroque and Liberty style, buildings by Gagliardi, Sinatra, Lanzerotti and Basile, as well as painters such as Sozzi, D Anna and Gianforma. One of the most beautiful churches is Santa Maria Maggiore (18th century) on the piazza of the same name, the facade of which is emphasized by a beautiful wrought-iron grille and with its simple shapes and is particularly elegant. In front of and around the basilica is the impressive Loggiato di Sinatra, an archway built in 1749 by the architect from Noto Vincenzo Sinatra, which is inspired by Bernini's model of St. Peter's Square in Rome. The archway is semicircular and includes three arcades in the middle and ten more on the sides, all in Rococo style. A total of 23 boxes, which until the end of the 19th century housed the exhibition stands for religious folk festivals and which were walled up and converted into business premises at the beginning of the 20th century.

«High up, on top of the steeply sloping rock, one could see, illuminated by the sun, the bell towers, the domes of the churches, the white facades and dark roofs of a group of houses facing right on the edge of the precipice and almost threatening to throw yourself down.
Luigi Capuana thus describes Ispica in his work Profumo. The writer lived in the Iblean city where he began writing The Marquis of Roccaverdina. Right in the quarry, in the shadow of a cliff, surmounted by a castle of which today only ruins remain, was the ancient Ispica .
At 13.30 on 11 January 1693 the fate of the city changed, a terrible earthquake shook and destroyed it. Only a few quarters of the ancient city were rebuilt, the new town was built outside the quarry.
From destruction to beauty
The reconstruction of Ispica followed the late Baroque canons and houses admirable pearls : the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the church of San Bartolomeo and the Basilica of the Santissima Annunziata. Among the many late Baroque beauties you can also see two notable examples of Art Nouveau architecture : Palazzo Bruno and Palazzo Bruno di Belmonte.

Driving Italy: SS115 Noto - Pozallo - 4k scenic drive baroque Sicily and city tour Pozallo
We cruise through the beautiful south-east corner of Sicily, famous for its UNESCO World Heritage Cities, with impressive baroque architecture, like, Noto, Ragusa or Modica. We drive from Noto, our base for exploring the region, to the port town of Pozallo, from where we took the ferry to Malta. The landscape is hilly and pictuoresque, with olive, lemon and orange trees. We do also a driving tour of Pozallo, enjoy!

Video from our holidaytrip by car through Sicily in may/june 2013. From day 15-18 we travelled to Ispica stayed at the Villa Principe di Belmonte visited Ragusa, on of the cities in that region destroyed by an earthquake in the 17th century and rebuilt in Baroque style. The last night we stayed in NH Parco degli Aragonesi , a businesshotel, a 5 minutes drive from the airport of Catania, where we dropped of our car and took the flight back home to Amsterdam. Modica is a city and comune of 54.456 inhabitants in the Province of Ragusa, Sicily, southern Italy. The city is situated in the Hyblaean Mountains. Modica has neolithic origins and it represents the historical capital of the area which today almost corresponds to the Province of Ragusa. Until the 19th century it was the capital of a County that exercised a so wide political, economical and cultural influence as it has been counted among the most powerful feuds of the Mezzogiorno.
Today Modica is well-known for its rich repertoire of culinary specialities, especially the typical chocolate inspired by an aztec recipe, and for its historical centre. Rebuilt following the devastating earthquake of 1693, its architecture has been recognised as providing outstanding testimony to the exuberant genius and final flowering of Baroque art in Europe and, along with other towns in the Val di Noto, is part of UNESCO Heritage Sites in Italy.
According to Thucydides, the city was founded in 1360 BC or 1031 BC and was inhabited by the Sicels in the 7th century BC. It was probably a dependency of Syracuse. Modica was occupied by the Romans after the battle of the Egadi islands against the Carthaginians in the Punic Wars 241 BC, together with Syracuse and all of Sicily. Modica became one of the thirty-five decuman (spontaneously submitted) cities of the island and was oppressed by the praetor Verres.
Modica consists of two urban centres, Modica Alta (Upper Modica) and Modica Bassa (Lower Modica). The older upper part is perched on the rocky top of the southern Ibeli hill, the lower part is built on the lower slopes and valley below. The walk down from Modica Alta to Modica Bassa reveals vistas of the lower town and involves many steps; not many attempt the reverse journey on foot.
During the last century the city has extended and developed new suburbs which include Sacro Cuore (or Sorda), Monserrato, Idria, these are often referred to as Modern Modica; both old and modern quarters of the city are today joined by one of Europe's higher bridge, the Guerrieri bridge, 300 metres (980 ft) long.
Despite being ravaged by earthquakes in 1613 and 1693, and floods in 1833 and 1902, Modica has retained some of the most beautiful architecture in Sicily. Much of the city was rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake with imposing and conspicuous urban monuments in the Sicilian Baroque style. The large Baroque Cathedral San Giorgio is dedicated to St George. While the cathedral was rebuilt following the earthquake of 1693, like many other parts of the city its roots are in the Middle Ages. From the front of the Cathedral a staircase of 300 steps leads down towards Modica Bassa.
Another notable church is San Pietro, dedicated to St Peter, in Modica Bassa, featuring a principal façade crowned by a typical Sicilian Baroque belltower, 49 metres (161 ft) high.

The economy of the area once principally agricultural producing olives, carobs, legumes, cereals, and cattle; an extraordinary and unique product is the famous chocolate of Modica, produced with an ancient and original Aztec recipe. The city has now been joined by factories producing textiles, furniture and cars. Tourism is also an important industry to the area, since Modica entered the UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002.
The eighteenth century saw Modica in the role of art and culture town, counting philosophers (Tommaso Campailla), poets (Girolama Grimaldi Lorefice), a school of medicine (Campailla, Gaspare Cannata, Michele Gallo, the Polara family) and literary academies among its inhabitants. In the nineteenth century, feudalism was abolished and Modica became a bourgeois town peopled by notables such as the writer and anthropologist Serafino Amabile Guastella, the agronomist Clemente Grimaldi, the musician Pietro Floridia and many painters, historians and other intellectuals. Modica was also the birthplace of writer Salvatore Quasimodo, recipient of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1959.
