City Sightseeing Tour Bus around Isle of Bute | Rothesay | Mount Stuart House | Scalpsie Bay | 2023

#bute #scottishislands #citysightseeing

Whilst visiting the beautiful isle of Bute, I took myself on a 'City' Sightseeing Tour of the island!

It began in Rothesay the main town just opposite the ferry terminal, to Port Bannatyne, Ettrick Bay, Scalpsie Bay, Kingarth, Kilchattan Bay and Ascog. All very pretty places. If that wasn't enough - there is also a stop for the incredibly impressive Victorian mansion House - Mount Stuart. I am not the biggest fan of big posh homes but this place takes makes you go 'WOW' when you walk in! It is a must see if visiting Bute.
We booked through; and paid £15 each in 2023 and you can hop on and off, but remember, this is not London, this is Bute, so the bus travels the route only 4 times a day so plan well.

#bute #calmac #walkingtour

Hi
Thanks for reading!
Whilst staying on the lovely Isle of Bute off of West Scotland thanks to a CalMac ferry, I spent time in Rothesay, the main town on the island. The weather was changeable so I walked the town centre over a couple of days with my camera in both wet and dry conditions.
I would recommend a visit to the beautiful Bute and make sure you walk or cycle, the stunning Serpentine Road off of Canada Hill,

Thanks for watching

Rothesay with Caledonian Macbrayne (CalMac) departing from the most beautiful station in Scotland?

Another day another ferry! And what a day it was - just a couple of days after Storm Arwen had swept through Scotland, the weather couldn't have been calmer as I set off from Wemyss Bay for a flying visit to Rothesay on the Isle of Bute.

The combined train station and ferry terminal at Wemyss Bay is one of the most beautiful and unique places I have ever started a trip from and it's long been on the cards for a visit.

So join me in Rothesay as I uncover some very interesting places during the two hours I have there!

Journey details:

Wemyss Bay - Rothesay, Sunday 28th November 12:10
Rothesay - Wemyss Bay, Sunday 28th November 15:05

Edinburgh is Scotland's capital and most historic town. It features well-preserved architecture from a wide range of time periods, from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. It is one of the best places to visit in Scotland for history enthusiasts and explorers. Glasgow, Scotland's largest city, is the best place for music, shopping, and cultural enthusiasts. It's a city that's constantly evolving, with plenty to do for people of all ages, backgrounds, and interests. Another place of interest is East Lohan. It has a little bit of everything, including the city, the coast, and the countryside, and makes for a perfect vacation destination.

For beach lovers, the Hebrides would be the ultimate destination. The Western Isle is home to beautiful beaches and mountain trails for hiking. Luskentyre Beach is very well-liked by the locals. The beach is gorgeous, with golden sands and blue water and picturesque mountains in the distance.
Dundee, Aberdeen, and Stirling are some of the best places to visit in Scotland for those who enjoy the stunning architecture. The St. Machar's Cathedral, medieval Stirling Castle, and V&A Museum indicate the architectural prowess of the Scots.

There is more than enough to eat, drink, and places to visit within the 32 administrative subdivisions of Scotland.

Driving Around Isle of Bute | Stone Circles & Beach | Scotland

Blackpark Standing Stones (Kingarth)

South of Kingarth village, tucked up against a forest plantation, are the partial remains of a stone setting that may once have formed part of a larger stone circle. The standing stones are variously known as the Blackpark Standing Stones (for the Blackpark plantation), or as the Kingarth Standing Stones or Stone Circle.

Three stones remain of the original seven stones, each different in character. Two are conglomerate and the third is schist.

St Colmac Cottages Stone Circle

Standing in a farm field southeast of St Colmac Cottages and just east of Ettrick Bay stands a late Neolithic or early Bronze Age stone circle of seven stones, though there may have originally been more. The stones are set within a circular bank enclosing an old beech plantation. An eighth stone stands immediately south of the circle.

Only four stones forming the circle still stand upright. Another three are now only stumps, though whether they were originally taller or not is unclear. The circle has an inner diameter of 13m (about 43 feet).

The tallest of the stones that make up the circle stands 2.4m (8 feet) high, while the shortest is just 0.55m (1.8 feet). The solitary stone outside the circle is 1.7m (5.5 feet) tall.

The Isle of Bute is a popular island in the Firth of Clyde due to its good ferry and rail links with the Ayrshire coast and Glasgow. It was one of the destinations for Glasgow holidays 'doon the watter' on the steam ferries of the past and indeed the Waverley steam ship still visits Bute to this day. Rothesay is the largest settlement on Bute and most of the visitors spend their time here as it is a good size town with lots to see and do, including a 13th century (!) castle with an actual moat. We spent some time there, but wanted to explore the island as a whole on our day out, so didn't dwell there too long.
The north end of Bute is nestled between two of the forks of the Cowal Peninsula on the mainland with only the Kyles of Bute waters to separate them. Most visitors head towards Rothesay and the south of the island as some of the bigger attractions are down that way, however, we decided not to sail into Rothesay, but took the lesser used ferry between Colintraive on the Cowal Peninsula and Rhubodach in the north. This is the shortest Calmac ferry crossing in Scotland, taking only two minutes, so a unique experience with very cheap fares. The roads on Bute stop short of the very north coast, so we weren't able to get to Buttock Point, the most northerly point of the island, sadly. But we drove the rest of the coast and crossed from one side to the other a couple of times. Bute has some great beaches and we'd earmarked Ettrick Bay for a visit. It was nice but the tide was in, so maybe we didn't see its sandy glory at its best. A last minute decision to go to Scalpsie Bay at the end of the day paid dividends as the tide was further out and the beach along with views of the north coast of Arran were spectacular. It's always great to see cows on the beach and it is a good location for seals, apparently, though we didn't see any on this occasion. We were super lucky with the weather, so we spent quite some time there.

*Isle of Bute Scotland*
The Isle of Bute, known as Bute, is an island in the Firth of Clyde in Scotland, United Kingdom. It is divided into highland and lowland areas by the Highland Boundary Fault. Formerly a constituent island of the larger County of Bute, it is now part of the council area of Argyll and Bute.

*West Island Way*
The West Island Way is a waymarked long distance footpath on the Isle of Bute. The route opened in September 2000 as part of Bute's millennium celebrations, and was the first waymarked long distance route on a Scottish island. It encompasses some of the finest walking on the Isle of Bute.

*Rubh’ An Eun Lighthouse*
The Rubh’ An Eun Lighthouse also known as Glencallum Bay Lighthouse stands on a rocky outcropping on the north side of Glencallum Bay, at the south-eastern tip of Bute. Rubh’ An Eun meaning the point of the birds was built in 1911 by the famous Stevenson family of lighthouse engineers.

*St Blane's Chapel*
St Blane’s Chapel has its roots in a monastery founded on the same site in the 6th century. The monastery itself was the home of St Blane and was possibly the forerunner to the better-known monastery of St Columba on Iona. An enclosure wall surrounds the monastic site, inside of which stands a 12th century chapel with a romanesque chancel arch. St Blane’s was the parish church of Kingarth for many centuries. The structures on this site belong to two eras: that early Christian monastery, abandoned during Viking raids around AD 790, and later a parish church, built in the 1100s and in use until the Protestant Reformation of 1560

*Dunagoil Vitrified Fort*
Dunagoil is a vitrified fort or dun on the Isle of Bute – an Iron Age hill fort whose ramparts have been melted by intense heat. It stands on a volcanic headland and gives its name to the bay that it overlooks. Like other places, such as Donegal, its name is from the Gaelic dún na gall – fort of the foreigners.

*Blackpark Stone Circle*
Where seven standing stones once stood, only three remain today and now form part of the Blackpark Plantation on the Isle of Bute. It's not clear what the original formation of the Kingarth Standing Stones were, but what remains today is yet another prehistoric connection to the rich history of the island.
