HELLO FROM LAGOS, NIGERIA -- COUNTRY #175!! 🇳🇬 I truly had a lot of fun making this video inside Africa's craziest and most populated city. Did you know that over 20 million people are living in Lagos?! It is hands down one of the most hectic, chaotic, and vibrant places I've ever been with a LOT of stories to tell. I'm overwhelmed.

My local friend and YouTuber named Tayo (his channel linked below) has been taking me all around his bustling city of Lagos and we've had an absolute blast together. Surprisingly, this was one of the hardest videos I've ever made because it's REALLY challenging to shoot content on these streets. People don't like being on camera here and they make a huge commotion in the streets and ask for money (etc) whenever they see it from a distance.

In any regard, I hope you enjoy this episode of my $10 series and get a glimpse into local Nigerian culture. More to come tomorrow! Nigeria is awesome!

Ojude Oba: Yoruba Heritage | A Short Film

One of my goals for this year was to tell the story of the Yoruba Aunties and Uncles of the Ojude Oba Festival which happens in a town in Ogun State, Nigeria called Ijebu Ode. The Ojude Oba Festival is a renowned cultural celebration that takes place in Ijebu-Ode, a historic city in Nigeria. This is an annual event held to honor the Oba, the traditional ruler of the Ijebu kingdom, and to celebrate the rich cultural heritage of the Yoruba people.

Hope you really enjoyed this short but very rich piece about my Yoruba people!I will be posting a much longer video in a couple of days which would be a really informative travel guide for those who want to attend, participate or find out more about the Ojude Oba Festival.

OJUDE OBA FESTIVAL IN IJEBU ODE

Ojude Oba is one festival that many anticipate every year in Yoruba land, especially the Ijebu people. The festival, this year, was filled with pomp, glitz and glamour.
IJEBU Ode has remained remarkable over decades as an ancient city with rich cultural heritage, like Ile-Ife, which has provided traditional values that serve as symbol of unity for the Yoruba people of Ijebu kindred. One if its rich cultural symbol of unity is the Ojude Oba festival. The Ojude Oba Festival brings the sons and daughters of the ancient city from wherever they reside in the world back to their ancestral land annually to re-unite with their families and friends amidst divers fanfares.

The festival is usually held in two days after the Ileya festival. The Ojude Oba festival shifts from Ijebu Ode to Ijebu-Isiwo for another three days celebration after the Ileya. The main purpose of the festival is for the people of Ijebu to come together as one to honor their king and the festival is regarded as one of the biggest in West Africa.

The annual Ojude Oba festival started some 100 years ago when Imam Tunwatoba led his friends and family members to pay homage to his friend, Oba Fidipote, the then Awujale of Ijebu land during the Ileya festival for his assistance to the peace Islam enjoyed in his domain which has grown in leaps and bounds to assume the status of a flagship cultural festival.

The festival has now grown to a great extent of being a rallying point that brings together sons and daughters of Ijebu-Ode from across the globe and re-uniting them. It was suppose to be just a festival, celebration to appreciate the King but the Ojude Oba Festival has grown beyond that to become a symbolic arm of the people of Ijebu, a rallying point that strengthens social relations among the people. The Ojude Oba Festival is seemingly become a pilgrimage for the people of Ijebu.

The yearly cultural festival is so colourful, full of glamour and entertainment with display of masquerade dances, cultural attires and other cultural dances. It is usually a day that indigenes and visitors enjoy the best of cultural values and hospitality in Ijebu Ode.

The festival started about a century ago as a purely religious event when the Ijebus imbibed Islam as a way of life.

All Ijebu people are expected to come home for the festival, kill a ram, even if they are no longer Moslems, and attend the Ojude Oba to dance with their ages grade before the Awujale. Ijebu people are noted for their love of displaying what they have and this festival allows the various groups to show off their wealth and prosperity.

Homage to Riliwanu Akinolu, the 21st OBA of Lagos- Festour

RILIWANU AKINOLU-Born and reared in Isale-Eko, the haven of Lagos indigenes, Rili, as he is popularly called in his younger days, is a philanthropist. Unknown to many, he is a benevolent father-figure to several indigent Isale-Eko students by helping them to realize their educational ambitions. This stems from his deep-rooted belief that Isale-Eko indigenes, like others from other parts of the metropolis, must endeavour to acquire higher education to give them leverage to take their rightful positions in the scheme of things both at the State and Federal levels. In various addresses, he also advised that they should take a cue from him, that in spite of his busy schedule as a senior police officer, he still spared sometime to read Law and was called to the Nigerian Bar; and partly practised Law in Lagos before his ascension to the throne.

Oba Akiolu's first anniversary on-the-throne gift to his immediate constituency, Isale-Eko, is the establishment of the Lagos Royal House Continuing Education Centre at Ita-Ono, a stone-throw from his palace. The centre, which is funded personally by the monarch, is running remedial courses for students in the neighbourhood.

In further pursuit of higher education for students of Isale-Eko extraction, he has also pledged an annual donation to the coffers of an association which operates a scholarship scheme for indigent Isale-Eko students. The body is headed by a retired judge, Justice Ishola Oluwa.

The Oba's assistance programmes to those seeking employment opportunities; encouragement of skills acquisition through vocational training with a view to making such trainees self-employed are still on course. More than 300 people have so far benefited from such magnanimity.

Also uppermost in the Oba's mind is the provision of a Modern town hall for Lagos to be sited at Enu-Owa; a cultural and spiritual centre on the Island. A committee of eminent Lagosians is being set up to handle the project. So also is another committee on the expansion and further beautification of the existing Iga Idunganran the official palace and residence of Oba of Lagos. This is clarion call to all rich Lagosians and other philanthropists to contribute generously towards the worthy causes.

One significant event to mark his first anniversary is the creation of two new honorary chieftaincy titles which the Oba conferred on two prominent citizens of Lagos.

One of the recipients, Chief Theophilous Owolabi Shobowale-Benson, Baba Oba of Lagos, is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), He has been deeply Involved in the politics of Lagos since his re-turn to Nigeria in 1947 to practise Law.

Now in his late eighties, TOS Benson, as he is popularly called, was a Councillor for many years in the defunct Lagos own Council, the predecessor of the present Lagos Island Local Government. Also a member of the defunct Western House of Assembly in Ibadan; and the House of Representatives, Lagos. At independence in 1960, he was Nigeria's first Federal Minister of Information.
