Kouvola (Finnish pronunciation: [ˈkou̯ʋolɑ]) is a city and municipality in southeastern Finland. It is located on the Kymijoki River in the region of Kymenlaakso and 134 kilometres (83 mi) northeast of the capital, Helsinki. With Kotka, Kouvola is one of the capital centers and is the largest city in the Kymenlaakso region.
The city has a population of 81,216 (31 December 2020)[2] and covers an area of 2,883.30 square kilometres (1,113.25 sq mi) of which 325.06 km2 (125.51 sq mi) is water.[1] The population density is 31.75 inhabitants per square kilometre (82.2/sq mi). Kouvola is bordered by the municipalities of Hamina, Heinola, Iitti, Kotka, Lapinjärvi, Loviisa, Luumäki, Miehikkälä, Mäntyharju, Pyhtää and Savita
Kouvostoliitto (The Soviet Kouvola) is one of Kouvola's nicknames. Behind the nickname for gravity is the rugged urban architecture in places. The appointment may largely also come from the group of communication students at Kymenlaakso University of Applied Sciences who have had a Kouvostoliitto project since 2003. In 2010, the group was awarded the first Kouvola Cultural Prize. According to the Kouvola Culture and Library Board, the project succeeded in turning antiquity, architecture and quiet nightlife into positive things through anti-marketing. The Kouvostoliitto name is used for various products, t-shirts, postcards and pins, etc. Among other things, these have made the name visible and in language. Kouvola basically ranks number one on the lists of the ugliest and most uncomfortable cities in Finland.
One of the best-known representatives of the architectural architecture is the giant Pohjola office building from 1976, which strikes the eyes of train passengers near the railway station. The town hall and 12-storey tower buildings from the same time next to the market square also look ugly. To change the grim look, Kouvola has started extensive work to improve and enliven the city center. A few years ago, shopping in the center of KOUVOLA suffered from the economic downturn, the growth of e-commerce and the result of the new Veturi shopping center outside the city center along Road 6. In the 1950s and 1990s, zoning actually prevented the settlement of the center of Kouvola, but now the situation has changed. The city center has already received several new apartment buildings that respect the old building stock, and more are planned. Thanks to the new apartments, the population of the city center will no longer decrease, unlike the rest of Kouvola.

Below the log lifter at the dam of the Kimola Waterway
The Kimola Waterway was dug in the 60's to facilitate transportation of log rafts from the Greater Päijänne waters to the Kymi river and the paper mills there. It bypasses the Vuolenkoski and Mankala water power plants, running a straight line from Vuolenkoski to Kimola, and thus shortened the original log transportation route by 30 kilometers. As water transportation was gradually replaced by railways and trucks, the waterway fell into disuse in 2002. The log lifting machinery stands rusted and in poor condition. The municipalities of Heinola, Iitti and Kouvola have announced a joint venture of demolishing the old log dam and replacing it with a lock to enable boat traffic through the waterway. The construction is expected to begin in 2015 with a budget of 30 million euros.

Matka opetti, että jopo ei ole polkupyörä, jopo on mielentila.
