Visiting and sightseeing Idrija, Slovenia
Weekend trip to Idrija with our yellow Labrador Bina. A small, remote village, listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List - Idrija, is well known for second largest mercury mine in Europe and Idrija lace. It was one of the hottest weekend this summer and descending into the mine was a nice cool off. Another idea to cool off is Idrijca river. It might me too cold, but just walking barefoot around the water can be effective. Also, go for a shadow stroll following Rake – the mine’s water channel.

Wonderful Lunch of Zlikrofi with Bakalca - Idrija Slovenia - ECTV
Eric Clark's Travel Videos - Idrija Slovenia - Wonderful Lunch of Zlikrofi with Bakalca
From Slovenia.si Website
Idrija is also home to a gastronomic specialty. The town and the surrounding area have been famous since the mid-19th century for idrijski žlikrofi. Idrijski žlikrofi are a national dish of Slovenia made from dough with a potato filling and a characteristic shape. In view of their traditional process of elaboration and recipe, in 2002 the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food granted idrijski žlikrofi traditional product status.
Making idrijski žlikrofi can be quite a lengthy process and consists of several phases. The first thing to do is to prepare the dough. Then it is time to make the filling. This consists of potato, minced lard or smoked bacon, onion, seasoning and herbs. The filling is shaped into regular, hazelnut-sized balls. Then the dough is rolled out thinly and the balls of filling are placed onto it. The dough is then folded over and pressed down between the balls of filling, forming 'ears'. A little hollow is then made in the top of each individual žlikrof, giving the žlikrofi their characteristic 'hat' shape. Now the žlikrofi are ready for the final phase – cooking. Idrijski žlikrofi are served with cracklings, various meat sauces and other sauces. The most common sauce for žlikrofi is called bakalca and is made with mutton or rabbit.
Žlikrofi are a popular dish in the Idrija area and homemade žlikrofi are a frequent item on the menu in many households. They are also made by five certified producers and can be bought in the shops.
Idrijski žlikrofi are served by some restaurants and farm tourism establishments. These can be identified by a distinctive yellow-and-brown signs with the inscription 'Traditional Food Served' and the logo of the Society for the Promotion and Protection of the Traditional Dishes of Idrija. Frozen idrijski žlikrofi can be found in supermarket freezers.
The popularity of idrijski žlikrofi shows no signs of waning and they are among the traditional Slovenian dishes whose production and consumption are growing strongly. According to some figures, around 50 tonnes of them are produced and consumed each year. Idrijski žlikrofi (including the frozen variety) contain no preservatives, colouring or flavour enhancers.
Preparing frozen žlikrofi is very simple: shake the frozen žlikrofi into boiling salted water and cook until they float to the surface. They can be served with a variety of sauces, giving free rein to individual creativity.

From Wikipedia
Idrija (pronounced [ˈiːdɾija] (listen), in older sources Zgornja Idrija;[2] German: (Ober)idria,[2][3] Italian: Idria) is a town in western Slovenia. It is the seat of the Municipality of Idrija. It is located in the traditional region of the Slovenian Littoral and is in the Gorizia Statistical Region. It is notable for its mercury mine with stores and infrastructure, as well as miners' living quarters, and a miners' theatre. Together with the Spanish mine at Almadén, it has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2012.[4] In 2011, Idrija was given the Alpine Town of the Year award.
The town of Idrija lies in the Idrija Basin, surrounded by the Idrija Hills. It is traversed by the Idrijca River, which is joined there by Nikova Creek. It includes the hamlets of Brusovše, Cegovnica, Prenjuta, and Žabja Vas close to the town center, as well as the more outlying hamlets of Češnjice, Ljubevč, Kovačev Rovt, Marof, Mokraška Vas, Podroteja, Razpotje, Staje, and Zahoda. The Marof hydroelectric plant is located on the Idrijca River on the northern outskirts of Idrija, between Marof and Mokraška Vas.
Mercury was discovered in Idrija (known as Idria under Austrian rule) in the late 15th century (various sources cite 1490,[5][6][7] 1492,[8][9] and 1497[5][7]). Mining operations were taken over by the government in 1580. The mineral idrialite, discovered here in 1832, is named after the town.
According to legend, a bucket maker working in a local spring spotted a small amount of liquid mercury over 500 years ago. Idrija is one of the few places in the world where mercury occurs in both its elemental liquid state and as cinnabar (mercury sulfide) ore. The subterranean shaft mine entrance known as Anthony's Shaft (Antonijev rov) is used today for tours of the upper levels, complete with life-sized depictions of workers over the ages. The lower levels, which extend to almost 400 meters below the surface and are no longer being actively mined, are currently being cleaned up.
The parish church in the town is dedicated to Saint Joseph the Worker and belongs to the Diocese of Koper. There are three other churches in Idrija, dedicated to the Holy Trinity, Saint Anthony of Padua, and Our Lady of Sorrows.[10]

Idrija, Slovenia: Life and Death in a Mercury Mine
Idrija mercury mine tour, UNESCO world heritage in Slovenia. Anthony's Shaft is the oldest preserved mine entrance in Europe and the starting point for an eerie walk through the lives of the miners. Nearly all of them eventually died from the hazards of mercury poisoning. The mine has been a tourist attraction since it was closed in 2008. Above ground, enjoy the history of lacemaking and the delicious local dumplings called žlikrofi.

Slovenia day Trips - Divje jezero Wild Lake near Idrija town and sheakey bridge on Idrijca river
Wild Lake (Slovene: Divje jezero) is a lake near Idrija in western Slovenia and a karst spring of the Vauclusian type. The lake is the source of the Jezernica River, a tributary of the Idrijca and, at 55 metres (180 ft) long, the shortest river in Slovenia. Water flows from under the ground and through a steeply inclined tunnel, explored to a depth of 160 metres (520 ft). The discharge occasionally surpasses 60 cubic metres per second (2,100 cu ft/s). However, when the water level is low, there is no outflow from the lake. In 1967, the lake was protected as a natural monument. In 1972, it was arranged to be the first Slovenian natural museum.
