TRAVELING TO SYRIA IN 2023... (intense!)

Traveling in to Syria in 2023 is not easy. The country is in the midst of recovering from a 12 year civil war, and entry is restricted, crossings in to this ancient land can only be made by land, from Lebanon or Jordan. We have wanted to travel to Syria for years, the cities of Damascus & Aleppo are some of the oldest & most incredible on Earth and its incredible culture, people and food have always fascinated us. In the heart of the Middle East, in what was Mesopotamia, and on the ancient Silk Road, Syria is at the cross road of civilisations. Even in its very recent history, Syria has been controlled by both the Ottoman's, the French to name a couple. Each different country has left its mark on Syria, making it one of the richest & most beautiful cultures not just in the Arab world, but on Earth.
Our journey starts in Beirut Lebanon, where we were picked up early in the morning and driven to the border, before attempting to cross in Syria and head straight for Damascus, the historic capital of the country.
Join us for one of the most intense travel days and overwhelming, interesting and crazy weeks in our lives. Welcome to Syria.

ALEPPO, SYRIA (What's It Like To Be A Tourist In 2023?)

Travelling to Aleppo, Syria was a travel experience we will never forget. For so many reasons, traveling here has been one of the most intense, and humbling experiences we've ever had. Visiting only one month after the earthquake of February 2023, we saw a city in recovery, yet again. Life here and the people of this city here have been through so much. But the spirit of this unique place in an even more unique country shines through, even to as an independent, foreign traveller s and passers through like us. Travel in Aleppo isn't for the faint hearted but is so rewarding. We really hope the soul of this incredible place shines through in this video. This is what it's like to be a tourist in 2023.

🇸🇾 Street Food in Damascus:

Today was a beautiful and also difficult day in Syria. We traveled all the way from Damascus to Aleppo in Northern Syria - along the way we saw so much war destruction, met incredible people, saw historical sites, and ate some delicious food. Today I’m sharing with you our food road trip in Syria.

► Thank you to Rami from Syrian Guides:

Here’s what we did:

Maaloula - After about an hour drive from Damascus, we arrived at the mountain town of Maaloula (where they still speak Aramaic), with so much history. First stop we went to Maaloula Manakeesh to eat some Manakeesh. Total price - 125,000 SYP ($8.33) for everything

Shuaa Restaurant - Along the highway we stopped to eat at this famous lamb restaurant. Total price - 350,000 SYP ($23.33) for everything

We continued driving to Homs, a city that was unfortunately hit very hard by the war. But people were in high spirits and we were greeted with kindness and hospitality.

Hama Lamp Kunafa - Finally we continued our journey to Hama, to eat a few essential Syrian foods in this historical city. We mainly tried batersh - roasted eggplant, ghee fried lamb. Total price - 550,000 SYP ($36.66) for everything

► Huge thank you to Rami, from Syrian Guides ( he arranged my entire trip to Syria. Get in touch with him for an amazing tour in Syria!

Syria today - June 2023

Today Syria remains under sanctions, no western embassy is open except for the Vatican's, and the country remains occupied by Turkish, American and Israeli troops. A piece of NATO, a piece of the Abrahamic Pact, a piece of Russia, a slice to the Kurds and one to the jihadists of Idlib: this is how the Syrian cake is sadly divided from the article
by Alberto Negri, an Italian journalist and writer, expert on the Middle East.

In the midst of this luna-park there are people, the Syrian people. This is what I want to tell of my journey: people trying to rebuild, in every sense, normality.
Syria was, until twelve years ago, before the civil war, the interest of foreign powers and jihadism, visited by 6 million tourists. Tourists who came from all over the world to see one of the places where human civilisation was born. To visit Syria today, you need to be part of an organised and government-authorised tour, and obtain an entry visa. We left Beirut in the direction of Damascus. We passed through the Lebanese border controls and, after a few kilometres, we found the Syrian ones. It was then that our journey began.

I would like to thank my fellow travellers, in particular Joanna, who acted as my interpreter, and Luca, who provided me with photos and videos of Palmyra.

Ancient Roman City Dara near Syria | Türkiye 🇹🇷 Turkey

This is the intro to my episode at the Ancient Roman City Dara. Watch the full episode on my channel.

In this video I show you the absolutely incredible ancient Roman city Dara in far Eastern Turkey. This magnificent city and it's aqueduct system is only a few miles from the Syrian border. Built as military city it was completely walled off, so they used the cistern system to help send the river water where it was needed in the city. Up until this point (besides Cappadocia) this was by far the busiest site we went. However it was 100% Turkish tourists. Not a single other western tourist amongst the hundreds of others there. It also turned into the hottest day of the trip. Topping out at 104-105 degrees Fahrenheit, with absolutely no shade. We finished the day of checking into our absolutely incredible hotel, which was an old Caravanserai hundreds of years ago.
