Hungerford, County of Berkshire, UK. Kennet and Avon Canal , River Dun and River Kennet. The Bear Hotel and Pub dates back to 13th century. Hungerford is well-known for its many antique shops.
Newbury (eight miles east of Hungerford, also on the Great Western Railway line from London Paddington station to Exeter St. David's station) still has many post-Victorian buildings of elegance. Newbury is on the Kennet and Avon Canal. One of the Paddington Bear statues on a wooden bench is in Newbury (advertising the 3rd cinema film appearing in 2024).

Kennet and Avon Canal Walk to Hungerford, English Countryside 4K

Exploring the English Countryside, The stretch of canal leading into Hungerford is part of the Kennet and Avon Canal, which runs from Bristol to Reading, passing through the picturesque Berkshire countryside. The Kennet and Avon Canal was completed in 1810 to provide a direct waterway link between London and the Bristol Channel, facilitating the transport of goods during the Industrial Revolution. Hungerford served as an important stop along the canal, contributing to the town’s growth as a market and trading centre. The canal fell into decline after the arrival of the railway in the mid-19th century, but it has since been restored and is now a key part of the region's heritage and leisure activities. The London Eye, a marvellous and modern piece of architecture in the British capital, offers a breathtaking view of the whole city including such sites as Buckingham Palace, St. Paul's Cathedral, the Houses of the Parliament and Big Ben. These majestic structures leave visitors in awe and impress anyone who knows good architecture.
In the heart of the city, on the South Bank of the Thames, between Hungerford Bridge and Westminster Bridge, this is one of the major landmarks which attract tourists.
It is also the tallest Ferris wheel in the whole of Europe and the most paid tourist site in the UK. This enormous wheel has 32 air-conditioned and sealed ovoidal passenger capsules making this whole magnificent experience a comfortable one. Hungerford & the Idyllic Trails of the North Wessex Downs Cycle Ride
An idyllic ride from Reading in England along the Kennet & Avon Canal to Newbury and ending in Hungerford taking in the North Wessex Countryside.
This is a trail idea I'd written down last year that I planned to do during the summer. While I did this ride in May it had that dusty hot summer feel about it, though with plenty of humidity off the flourishing nettles along the canal tow path.
Could this be one of the most idyllic rides I've done to date? It was certainly very beautiful and peaceful, especially around half way through the later trail between Newbury and Hungerford. The trail feels much quieter with less people, calm and with birds of prey over head. It was very special.
Some of the trail has quite rough surfaces where its basically grass with hard-packed dry mud, some which is quite bumpy so it's worth keeping this in mind though it wasn't for a particularly long time.
Newbury was a nice Market Town and certainly makes a good place to stop for a few hours with plenty to do and places to grab a coffee. Hungerford is a quiet town and much less tourist orientated but there are things to see and do though its much smaller than Newbury.
I really enjoyed this trail and got a bit of a tan despite using factor 50.
