From Wikipedia:
Beacon is a city located on the Hudson River in Dutchess County, New York, United States. As of the 2020 census, the city's population was 13,769. Beacon is part of the Kiryas Joel–Poughkeepsie–Newburgh Metropolitan Statistical Area as well as the larger New York–Newark–Bridgeport, New York–New Jersey–Connecticut–Pennsylvania Combined Statistical Area.
Beacon was so named to commemorate the historic beacon fires that blazed forth from the summit of the Fishkill Mountains to alert the Continental Army of British troop movements. Originally an industrial city along the Hudson, Beacon experienced a revival beginning in 2003 with the arrival of Dia Beacon, one of the largest modern art museums in the United States. Recent growth has generated debates on development and zoning issues.
The area known as Beacon was settled by Europeans as the villages of Matteawan and Fishkill Landing in 1709. They were among the first colonial communities in the county. Beacon is located in the southwestern corner of Dutchess County in the Mid-Hudson Region, approximately 90 miles (140 km) south of Albany, and approximately 60 miles (97 km) north of New York City.

North Sentinel Island.. Read HERE:
North Sentinel Island is one of the Andaman Islands, an archipelago in the Bay of Bengal which also includes South Sentinel Island. It is home to the Sentinelese, a tribe who have rejected, often violently, any contact with the outside world. They are among the last uncontacted people to remain virtually untouched by modern civilization.
North Sentinel island is not only defended to this day by its warriors but also by rough and unpredictable seas, aided and abetted by a nearly unbroken ring of treacherous coral reefs. The reefs make the island all but inaccessible by sea for 10 out of 12 months and fairly dangerous to approach during the remaining two. The island has long been known and feared by sailors for its manifold defenses. Decades would pass between visits, with the Sentineli living their simple lives dreamily undisturbed - for the moment.
Unrecorded successful landings are likely but they cannot have been numerous. Occasional poachers landing on the island and contributing to the continued hostility of the Sentinelis are a distinct possibility. It would be one explanation for the inexplicable changes in Sentineli behavior from one visit to the next, not too far from downright friendly one time, violently and implacably hostile the next. Shipwrecked sailors may also have caused trouble on the island from time to time throughout its history. As late as March 1970 a wreck was spotted on a coral reef off the SE coast of the island. On inspection it was found to have been lying there for 7 or 8 months. There was no sign of the crew.
At least one escaped Indian convict from Port Blair is known to have made his way to North Sentinel Island in 1896. Two others with him were drowned on the reefs surrounding the island. The lone survivor's luck did not hold: he was killed by the Sentinelis and left on the beach where his body was spotted and retrieved by a visiting British party.

Best HIKING TRAILS Redwood National Park with KIDS!!!
#Redwoodnationalpark #redwoodstrails #redwoodswithkids
Today we are in Northern California at Redwood National and State Park with our kids. And we did our research on the best hiking trails in the Redwoods. And we came up with our top 3 Best Hikes to do in the Redwoods with kids. We took into consideration, the difficulty level, the lenght of the trail and how much fun it it! All three trails that made our list were majorly fun...More than just a walk in the woods, they had some element of fun. Creeks to walk through, hidden beaches, massive trees with hollows that could be forts. So here it is our top three list for the Redwood National Park with kids.
#3 Enderts Beach trail via the Coastal Trail
This trail is great for families with kids old enough to listen, because parts of this trail hug up to some coastal cliffs. But these cliffs is what make this trail so amazing. There is Blue Pacific Ocean as far as the eye can see. The Trail desends very quickly and it is an out and back trail. And the payoff at the end is incredible. Its Enderts Beach and my kids feel like they are the first people on earth to ever discover it, because of the work we had to do to get here. The rocky shoreline of Enderts Beach is a great place to discover and play in ocean Tide pools. My kids found so many crabs, barnicles and sea anenemies. A little tip for hiking this trail is conserve some energy for the trip back, because it is an all uphill hike.
#2 2 on the list goes to Fern Canyon! FYI reservations to access this trail is a MUST. This is a very popular trail and they try to keep it from getting over crowded. Plus when you arrive there is a $12 vehicle fee. But all this planning in advace will be well worth it. Fern Canyon is like nothing we have ever seen!!! it almost looks prehistorc. I'm guessing that is why Jurrasic Park 2 Lost World used this location for their movie. The Fern Canyon Trail is a lollypop loop trail that follows the bottom of a canyon. There are small wooden planks to walk on to help hikers from getting wet, but if you are hiking with kids, just plan on getting wet. The canyon walls all 30 feet high on both sides and are covered with moss and different species of ferns but the caves are just covered in green and wetness. The kids loved exploring and looking for Giant Pacific Salamanders, frogs and fish. When we finished the look we went back to the trailhead, and from there, there is access to Gold Bluffs Beach. Here the kids played in the waves of the Pacific ocean and watched as seals did the same.
Before we get to our number one spot we have an honorable mention that is not a hike at all but it is a touristy thing that must be done. It is a great way for the kids to see how MASSIVE these Redwood trees really are.
Our #1 spot had to go to Cathedral Trail. Prairie Creek Visitor Center
Located just off the Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway - in the heart of Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park. This is where you can talk to a ranger about how to hike Cathedral Trail. What trail you should take to get to Cathedral and where to take the short detour to Big Tree. The 15th largest Redwood in the park.
The visitors center. Exhibits about the Civilian Conservation Corps and redwood ecology, park information, junior ranger program, bookstore and retail sales.
Cathedral trail is what I dreamed the Redwoods would be. The
groves of Redwood Trees are massive. This is where E.T. the movie was filmed and being here you believe in the magic of flying bicycles. This was a giant nature playground for my kids as they played on giant tree stumps and hollowed out trees.
All three of these hikes are unforgetable and perfect for family's

Howland Island, Montezuma Walk in the Park episode 231
North of Cayuga Lake, Howland Island is a major component of the Montezuma Wetlands Complex, where a partnership among government agencies, non-profit organizations, and local landowners works to restore and manage the extensive wetlands that settlers encountered more than two centuries ago. In January, the Montezuma Audubon Center filled its auditorium with people who had come to learn about the history of this unusual island bounded by the Erie Canal and Seneca River. In this episode of Walk in the Park (231), Alyssa Johnson, environmental educator for the Montezuma Audubon Center, reveals the past 90 years of history of Howland Island in public ownership, from its days as a Civilian Conservation Corps camp, to a WW2 prisoner of war camp, and then a wildlife management area. And she takes us through the changing practices and policies toward wildlife on the island during subsequent decades. Finally she shows us some ways we can get access to this land where wildlife is top priority.
Walk in the Park is a local public access TV series produced at PEGASYS Studio in Ithaca, NY by Owl Gorge Productions, Owlgorge.com. You can see most past episodes at the website walkinthepark.tv.

On Friday, September 13, 2024, a federal judge agreed to mediation in a years-long rent dispute case involving the SS United States Conservancy, a group that has sought to preserve the fabled ocean liner. The ship may be destined to be sunk to become an artificial reef in Florida. Watch Mark Strassmann’s Feb. 17, 2013 “Sunday Morning” report about the glamorous history of the ship – longer than the Titanic, faster than any ocean liner, ever – and how it came to inhabit a berth in Philadelphia.

Beacon NY, Hudson Valley, VISIT vortex
A BEACON OF LIGHT
Dutchess Countys city of Beacon inherited its name from beacon fires lit in nearby mountains by Revolutionary War troops. The 1800s celebrated it as The Hat Making Capital of the US. Today, still a beacon of light—now on the arts—its 1990s cultural renovation made it home to one of the world's largest contemporary art museums, Dia: Beacon. The artistic rebirth of Main Street offers Hudson Beach Glass, River Winds Gallery, and the Howland Cultural Center housing artifacts from the Historical Society. Riverfront Park and Dennings Point Park provide breathtaking coastline views of the Hudson River as well as water sports and camping. COMPRISED OF: A city incorporated in 1913 from the amalgamation of the Villages of Matteawan and Fishkill Landing and a small portion of Fishkills hamlet of Glenham.

Is THIS the WORST City In America? Highland Park, Michigan
It's hard to argue that Highland Park isn't the worst city in America. The median household income is the lowest in the country for cities with a population of 5,000 or more. Highland Park has some fascinating history, as it's the birthplace of the assembly line which allowed automobiles to be built through mass production. It was technology that changed the world to what we know it as today. However, today Highland Park faces issues of extremely high crime rates, and most of the cities residents live in poverty.
