5 Things American Tourists Shouldn't Wear in Europe

Heading to Europe & Not Sure What to Pack? Here are a few things that my fellow US travelers may want to avoid packing if they are traveling to Europe.
1. Baseball Caps: Europeans in general do not wear baseball caps, especially backwards. You would be better served to wear a more traditional hat. You will see an occasional NY Yankee hat, but why not buy the fancy hat you always wanted instead?
2. Athletic Wear: Europeans tend to wear athletic wear to do sports, not to wear around town. There is a trend of more athleisurewear in Europe, but it is not to the extent that there is in US.
3. Khakis: the omnipresent US male pant choice is not something you will see too often in Europe. Go for colored pants or jeans. If you want khaki like pants wear Chinos instead of Dockers. The pants you will see are a thinner cut or skinnier fit than in the US.
4. Oversized US University Sweatshirts.
5. Sport Shoes or High Heals: US sport shoes and white socks are not quite as popular in Europe as they are in the US. You may be better off with Urban Street shoes like Vans instead. Also, women should be careful with high heels as with all the cobblestone it is easy to hurt your ankles.

Heidelberg | South Africa Urban Rural Scenic Travel
Heidelberg began in 1862 as a trading station built by a German, Heinrich Julius Ueckermann. A town was laid out around the store and named after Ueckermann's alma mater. In 1866, the District of Heidelberg was created from the eastern portion of the Potchefstroom district with its own landdroost (magistrate) having been laid out as a churchplace in 1865.
Heidelberg is some 50 kilometres south-east of Johannesburg, close to the Mpumalanga border. Just south of the town is the De Hoek toll plaza on the newest section of the N3, which opened in December 2001.
Heidelberg sits nestled at the eastern end of the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, a large tract of land that is home to Gauteng's highest point, almost 2,000 metres above sea level.
Heidelberg has played an important part in South African history acting as a capital for the Boer republic during the war with Great Britain. During the First War of Independence, Heidelberg served as capital of the Zuid Afrikaansche Republiek under the Triumvirate of Paul Kruger, P.J. Joubert and M.W. Pretorius, from 1880 to 1883.
In 1885 the Witwatersrand gold reef was discovered in the Heidelberg district and the office of the Mining Commissioner was established there.
Heidelberg developed as a typical rural Victorian town. Many buildings dating back to the period between 1890 and 1910 have been preserved.
In addition, Heidelberg was home to A.G. Visser, a well-loved medical doctor and famous Afrikaans poet. His home (only open to the public by appointment) can still be seen situated close to the main road through town. Historical landmarks in the town includes A.G. Visser's bust and the Klipkerk.
The British built a concentration camp here during the Second Boer War to house Boer women and children. A monument was erected in the main cemetery to the memory of the women and children. A monument was erected by the current ANC-led municipality in the late 1990s. It commemorates the black women and children who also died during the war.
Ermelo is an agricultural and mining, as well as commercial and education town in the Gert Sibande District Municipality of the Mpumalanga province of South Africa.
Situated 210 km east of Johannesburg, covering an area of 47.6 square km is home to an approximately 100 000 inhabitants.

What are the best things to do in Heidelberg?
Start the day in the Market Square
The Marktplatz (Market Square) is the heart of Heidelberg Old Town. Lined with restaurants and small shops, the square buzzes with activity, especially on the market days on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Bordered by the Church of the Holy Spirit on one side and by the Town Hall on the other, the Marktplatz is the perfect place to take the mood of the town before to starting to explore it. Just take a seat at one of the terraces, have a drink and watch life pass by.
Location: Marktplatz, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany
Must-See: Church of the Holy Spirit
Known as Heiliggeistkirche in German, the Church of the Holy Spirit dominates Heidelberg Market Square. Built at the end of the 14th century on the site of a late-Romanesque basilica, this Gothic church is made of reddish sandstone and features tall arched columns and a ribbed ceiling. The highlights of the Church of the Holy Spirit are the tomb of King Rupert III and his wife Elisabeth, and the chance to climb to the top of the steeple. From up there, you’ll get a stunning view of the city.
Location: Marktplatz, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany
Explore the Old Town
Heidelberg Altstadt (Old Town) spreads around the Market Square and stretches along the Neckar River. Sat just below Heidelberg Schloss (castle) it hosts old and modern houses in a maze of narrow, cobblestoned streets. Boutiques and restaurants as well as attractions such as the Palatinate Museum and the Studentenkarzer (the students’ jail) give you many opportunities to stop, take photos, and learn more about Heidelberg.
Location: Marktplatz, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany
Shop on Hauptstrasse
Hauptstrasse is an almost 2 km pedestrianized street that crosses Heidelberg Old Town from west to east. The main road of the Altstadt, it’s also the city’s main shopping street. Shoes, cosmetics, lingerie, fashion, and more – you’ll find almost everything on Hauptstrasse. There’s even a booth where you can take books for free, dropping off your old ones for the next visitor. Take a break at the Hotel Ritter, a stunning historical building that faces the south side of the Church of the Holy Spirit.
Location: Hauptstraße, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany
Cross Karl Theodor Bridge
Commonly called the Old Bridge, Karl Theodor Bridge crosses the Neckar River in the northern part of the Old Town. One of the most notable landmarks of Heidelberg, it’s a 180-meter-long arched bridge built in sandstone in 1788. This picture-perfect pedestrianized bridge offers great views and photo opportunities of the Old Town. It’s also a place where you can lock a love padlock on the railing and throw the key in the river before enjoying a romantic stroll in the evening.
Location: Am Hackteufel, 69117 Heidelberg, Germany
Must-See: Schloss Heidelberg
Nestled on the northern Königstuhl hillside, 80 meters above Heidelberg Old Town, Schloss Heidelberg (Heidelberg Castle) was originally built in the early-13th century. History took its toll on the castle which, even partially ruined, is still one of the most popular attractions in the town. You’ll find an onsite restaurant and the very interesting German Apothecary Museum there. The views of the Old Town from the Dicker Turm (Thick Tower) are breathtaking. You can get there with the funicular that climbs to the top of Königstuhl Hill.
End the day bar-hopping in the Altstadt
Heidelberg Old Town hosts a lively nightlife. We’ve picked 3 popular venues at which you can enjoy a night cap (or 2). Among the best wine bars in town is Vinothek Restaurant Oskar on Haspelgasse. They have a broad range of Old and New World labels for you to taste. About 120 meters away, you can sample locally brewed beers at Vetter's Alt Heidelberger Brauhaus on Steingasse. It’s reputed for brewing one of the strongest beers in Germany – 33% ABV! Last but not least, for a rocking night, head to Eckstein on Fischmarkt. This cool and stylish pub is a very pleasant place to spend the evening, even if you’re not a metalhead.

Tranquil Heidelberg, is such an awesome town, a place filled with history and friendly people. Heidelberg is located midway between Riversdale and Swellendam off the N1 National Road on the south coast of South Africe and is 276km's from Cape Town.
The town got it's name through German settlers arriving in South Africa in 1856, having the same name as the German city and established on the river banks of the Duiwenhoks River that flows from the Langeberg Mountains into the Indian Ocean. The town has an interesting history and there is an historical walking tour that can be easily followed.
There is a variety of Bed and Breakfast places as well as the old worlde charm of The Heidelberg Hotel.
I found a lovely place to stay 2 nights on the corner of Fourie Street, Aan De Kanal (On The Canal) owned by Cassie and Maret Koen, +27 028 722 1389 and cell 084 522 2350. Highly recommended, thank you Cassie and Maret for your awesome hospitality!

The Best of HEIDELBERG, GERMANY in a Day (4K): Exploring the CASTLE and the OLD TOWN with Friends!
Heidelberg is Germany’s oldest and most famous university town. It is known for its striking Old Town, well-preserved architecture, charming streets, and its beautiful setting on the Neckar River and evocative hilltop castle.
Everytime we have guests from outside Germany, we tour them around Mannheim City and Heidelberg. In this video, my friends and I are exploring the Old Town and visit the Heidelberg Castle in one day. We took a tram from Mannheim City to Heidelberg and back. It is quite convenient and it takes almost an hour.
The Castle dominates the city's skyline, perched high on a hill overlooking the old town. The castle, partially in ruins, is an iconic landmark and a testament to Heidelberg's rich history. It offers stunning panoramic views of the town and the river below.
The old town of Heidelberg is a captivating blend of history, culture, and natural beauty. Its well-preserved architecture, lively atmosphere, and stunning surroundings make it a must-visit destination for travelers seeking a glimpse into Germany's past.
