Things to see in Exeter So much more than the University in this history filled city...
We took a day trip to Exeter a great place to visit in the UK. With so much history, from its stunning Cathedral to it's beautiful Tudor buildings. Exeter has so much to offer for everyone and so much to see.
We spent the day walking around the historic sights and walked down the quirkiest, smallest, street in England. We enjoyed the sunshine at Exeter quay side and even saw a house that moved !!!. We were humbled by the well preserved St Catherines Almhouses the badly bombed church from world war two.
Exeter even has a dark history involving witches and was the last place in the UK that women were accused and executed for witch craft.
We can recommend visiting Exeter enough, there is so much more to Exeter than the university.

St Mary Steps Church and Stepcote hill Exeter England, medieval street
Stepcote hill street is one of the oldest surviving parts of Exeter, located in the West Quarter. According to Hoskins, Stepcote hill name comes from the Old English word for steep, rather than from step, and cote for enclosure. In 1270 it was referred to as Styppecotehyll, and had become Stepcote Hill by 1588, according to a deed.
The hill had been used as the main route into Exeter from the river since Roman times, and it was used by strings of pack horses and weary travellers, before New Bridge Street was constructed. The entrance to the street is flanked by St Mary Steps Church on the left, and a pair of timber framed houses that date from about 1500, on the right. Going up the street, the first turn on the right, behind the two fore mentioned houses, and opposite the church chancel door, is Parsonage Lane, so called because it once led to 'the rector's and school-master's houses'.
One early reference to the street from 20th September, 1462, gives an account of the will of Felicia Selman, in which she gave the parish two cottages with adjoining gardens, on Stepcote Hill, which was to be administered by the feoffees. In addition, on the anniversary of her will, 4d was to be paid to the rector, 3d to each of the two priests, 3d to two clerks, 2s to be spent on bread and beer, 2d on cheese, 2d given to the church-wardens and the remainder was to go to the church.

A new King in the street
When William of Orange was invited to take the throne with his wife Mary from James II in 1688, he landed at Brixham and marched to Exeter, enroute for London. He rode up Stepcote Hill with a large force of 200 Blacks from the Plantations of the Netherlands in America...200 Finlanders...all in bright armour.
In the early 18th Century Stepcote hill and area was inhabited by merchants. A record shows that a certain Thomas Clutterbuck had imported lemons and fresh lime juice at 5 shillings per gallon, expensive and rare commodities in Exeter at that time, for sale from his premises in Stepcote Street. At roughly the same time, Stepcote Hill was said to be not only congested, but to contain some expensive property; one house, garden and packing chamber, owned by the fuller Nicholas Dark, was insured in 1740 for £1,000, the same value for which the New Inn in the High Street had been insured, only eleven years earlier.
A few years later, Andrew Brice wrote of Stepcote Hill A descent called Stepcote-Hill, to which the Butcherow leads.... the Guts, Blood, Litter, Ordure and a variety of Nastiness are, in hard showers of rain, rapidly carried.... into the River. In 1802, Mrs Flashman was fined 1s for throwing filth before her door in Stepcote-hill which will not have helped the situation.
Victorian times
Although a new route into the city from the west was opened, when the the old medieval bridge was replaced in 1778, Stepcote Hill still carried some traffic. James Cossins reminisced in 1877 of Stepcote Hill from around 1820 The direct line from the Old Bridge was up Stepcote hill. I have seen three horses pulling a waggon up that steep ascent.
The street still supported some commercial enterprise, and in November 1820, John Hancock and Son, thanked their many customers for supporting their business as manufacturers of Tortoise-shell, Ivory and Horn combs. By 1834, Hancock's house was for sale as the last of the old merchant class moved out. There were a number of sales of property, as the nature of the area changed. In 1835, Turner's Buildings, ten compact and well built Dwelling-Houses, calculated for the occupation of mechanics, and now fully and respectively Tenanted, producing together an Annual Rental of £76 4s.... Each house will be entitled to an exclusive Garden frontage, to the use of a Pump of Excellent Well Water in common, and to other conveniences were offered for sale.
Later in the 19th Century, the area was home to a large, poverty stricken artisan and labouring class. The area was afflicted with bouts of cholera and the inhabitants suffered from poor health and short lives. There were 15 deaths from the cholera in 1832, and even though Preston Street had 43 and Smythen Street 24 victims, the number in Stepcote Hill was high, relative to its length. The next year, and the Exeter Commissioners of Improvement were concerned that so few on the hill had connected their house to the public sewers. Parsonage Court was declared unfit for human habitation in May 1878 by the jury in an inquest, after they visited the court during their duties.

Exeter is an ancient city on the River Exe in Devon, South West England. Dating back to the Roman era, the Exeter City Walls surround its centre and Gothic Exeter Cathedral. Exeter Castle, a Norman landmark, overlooks leafy Northernhay and Rougemont Gardens. To their west, the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery (RAMM) displays fine art and costumes. The vaulted, medieval Underground Passages snake beneath the city.
Princesshay Shopping Centre adjoining the Cathedral Close and the High Street was redeveloped between 2005 and 2007, despite some local opposition. It incorporates 123 varied residential units.
The original Princesshay opened in the 1950s, Princesshay was the first pedestrianised shopping street in the country, running from Bedford Street to Eastgate House, roughly parallel with the High Street. The name was also used for the entire post-war development on the south side of the High Street between Paris Street and the Cathedral precinct, lying north of Southernhay. It replaced the pre-war area known as Bedford Circus (which included the Eastgate Arcade) that was levelled by Exeter City Council following damage in the Blitz. Before building commenced, a plaque was unveiled at the site on 21 October 1949 by Princess Elizabeth after whom the development was named.
The post-war buildings have been replaced with a modern shopping centre, opened in September 2007. It was the subject of considerable discussion with strong views for and against; inevitable because of its proximity to the Cathedral Close and Southernhay and the design which integrated mixed housing into the Exeter retail zone, and resisted the late twentieth century drive towards bland malls.
Despite criticism, the site was developed by Land Securities in partnership with The Crown Estate into 530,000 sq ft of retail space accommodating over 60 stores. It won the British Council of Shopping Centres Supreme Gold Award in 2007, Retail Week's Shopping location of the year in 2008, and the International Council of Shopping Centers Best Medium Sized Shopping Centre in Europe in 2008.
Princesshay Shopping Centre has a CACI rating of 30 which places it between Covent Garden and Derby in terms of its profitability. In 2011 it had an annual footfall of 9.5 million which attracted a potential spending of over £730 million.
Princesshay's largest stores are Next and Debenhams along with other High Street stores such as Apple Store, New Look, Fat Face, Topshop/Topman, River Island, Zara, Tiger, Levi's, Hollister, Superdry, Lush, Hotel Chocolat, Build A Bear, Musto, Saks Hair and Beauty, Schuh, HMV, All Saints and Pandora.
Princesshay restaurants and cafes including Starbucks, Costa Coffee, Nandos, Giraffe, Coal Bar and Grill, Chandos Deli, Wagamama, Coffee 1 and YO! Sushi.
Princesshay is also home to Exeter's Underground Passages, a tour in medieval subterranean passageways that used to transport water under the city centre. Dating back to the 14th century, today visitors can enjoy a guided tour of this fascinating attraction that takes you underneath the heart of Exeter.
Exeter City Centre provides substantial shopping facilities. The High Street is mainly devoted to branches of national chains. Three significant shopping areas that connect to the High Street provide a more varied menu. Princesshay, connecting to the south side of the High Street was home to a number of independent stores prior to redevelopment in 2007, but is now also largely occupied by national chains. The House of Fraser building on the High Street has been bought by a local wealth performance management firm, Prydis, who have released their plans to redevelop the building as a three-storey hotel with a rooftop bar and retail shops.
On the other side of the High Street, the partly-undercover Guildhall Shopping Centre houses a mixture of national and more regional shops, and connects to the wholly enclosed Harlequins Centre where smaller businesses predominate. Smaller streets off the High Street such as Gandy Street also offer a range of independent shops.
